Up to 2008 many of these guys were nominally left leaning, politically inactive, or libertarians. The live and let live attitude is quite common among guys. You now have guys embracing anti-woke (or at the time "SJW") attitudes, following their youtubes, reading online right wing publications. So they aliented a lot of non-right wing guys and channeled them into right wing movements.
Think of it this way. There is a culture war. It continually expands and creates new battle fields. Each time there's a new battle, they may "win" but it alienates more and more people.
The left has been slowly losing males since 2011, when the online "great awokening" started to happen. It reached the tipping point probably around 2020 and has gotten worse and worse since.

It's contested, and Zoe Quinn never admited anything, and regular media relied upon gaming media to report on this. Maybe it didn't happen, who cares? At this point it doesn't even matter.
If they were just transparent, did an investigation, they could have calmed things down. Instead they circled the wagons and went on the offensive, not realizing how fragile their positions are.
