The movie is based on a novel from the literary tradition of realism. As such it doesn't attempt to glorify or condemn anything, but merely to depict things as they were. The conclusions one draws from it or the thoughts and emotions it inspires are left to the observer. I thought the story worked well as a wistful and nostalgic look at one man's partly heroic, partly tragic life's journey while also offering a fascinating glimpse into 18th century social life with all its mores and idiosyncrasies.
