I really gotta challenge that, because even Nazi Germany was not particularly "militarist." Hitler's control manifested through the SS, which was a distinctly different organization from the Wehrmacht. In fact, the Wehrmacht enacted a coup after attempting to kill Hitler and arrested the SS. The assassination attempt failed though so the coup was ultimately unsuccessful and most of its conspirators were executed.
Governance by the military and veterans is more accurately described as a Stratocracy, and is not necessarily authoritarian in the conventional sense of the idea. Stratocracies can be composed of an assembly, various military ministries, and a chief executive not unlike a Republic.
