Mali's greatest city was never anything more than some ugly mud favela.
The Mali Empire was known for the large quantity of gold it owned, and not for anything else (architecture, technology...etc).
And since they were isolated from the civilized world by a massive desert barely anyone crossed, all this gold they owned couldn't even be used to mordernize their shithole.

It's the most impressive monument Mansa Musa left behind and was the most impressive building in Mali until the French built the Djenne mosque in 1907.

Knowing a little about Mali (basically just hearing about it from afrocentrists on the internet) makes you go "Wow Wakanda was real".
Actually looking it up however makes you realize it was the most overrated "empire" in history and makes you further disrespect Africa.
