Pros
>great variety of levels
>lots of creative and fun gimmicks
>banging soundtrack
>lot of attention to detail in the levels and backgrounds
>challenging but not excessively so to the point of frustration
>movement just feels great, very fluid and responsive
>simple controls but where each move has its own use and niche and levels are designed around it (except the ground pound, holy shit is that worthless)
>actually somehow manages to make water levels fun

Cons
>a few issues where hitboxes were a bit misleading
>save system is a bit rough (especially ice world where you have to do a gauntlet of like six of the hardest levels in a row with no save point, and a game over means do the whole thing over)
>bosses are laughably easy and just larger versions of basic enemies (and a... fucking barrel..?)
>camera is a bit zoomed in and can occasionally take a few seconds to catch up with the action

Overall, it's a strong 8/10. Not quite classic masterpiece status like Crash Bandicoot, but a very solid first entry.

Why are Donkey Kong games so black-coded? And for some odd reason nobody has made the connection even when we've been having this for the past 30 years:
>series literally opens up with DK and Cranky fucking around with a boombox
>DK rap, guns, Dixie and Tiny's general sass, watermelon health, coconut bling, Funkys entire existence, Swankys old school 80s pizzazz
>the bantering between DK and Diddy at end of DKC1, the bantering between Dixie and Diddy in DKC2, very reminiscent of black friendships/relationships
>lots of exaggerated emoting not uncommonly seen in black culture
>bit of a nitpick but the DK family having like a million cousins and siblings with elderly sticking around and no parents in sight
I get hip hop was becoming the "thing" in the 90s, and pretty much all types of media were making references to it, but I felt DK took it just a little step further compared to everyone else, and no one really raised an eyebrow because it was amidst the widescale hype. On closer inspection however.. it's very amusing, to say the least.

Literally nothing about this game resembles Donkey Kong. So boring and trite. It's over. Donkey Kong is for kids now. This is an insult to the Donkey Kong fanbase. It even has Mario sidescrolling now. Super Mario Bros. ruined this fucking company. Fuck you.

It's more like a continent than a country. You might think think that it's fine because Australia is a continent and a country but that's because you're a fucking idiot. Australia doesn't have rainforests and frozen tundra. You then might think that as you progress through the game that time is passing with you so the seasons are shifting but then you'd be wrong again because you can easily got back to an old level and the weather is exactly as it was before. You then might think that time is passing as you travel backwards so by the time you get to the level you're going to it's back to being the season it was the 1st time you visited it but if you think that you're a goddam sheep. You can jump through any order of levels which would take greatly varied amounts of time and when you get back to any level the weather will be exactly the same. Time is no factor, ot's not the season it's the fucking climate. Trust me, I've tried, the weather never changes, ot's always the same no matter when you go to it. This has darker connotations too since if the "country" was a land mass amon an orb spinning in space then not only the weather but the time of day would have some variance as well and there os none. None.
