It's just a massive drain on finite resources. Civilization acts as an insulator from nature's pressures. If a civilization is not directed consciously it will succumb to entropy and dysgenia. Thoughtful and effective proxies for nature's pressures must be designed and implemented to counteract this insulatory effect. Once the requisite human captial for civilization is lost, there is no guarantee it can be re-obtained. Humans are essentially being filtered and proving they are incapable of overcoming these underlying processes, lacking sufficient intelligence, wisdom, goal/value orientation. Maybe it was simply hubris to think that we were ever capable of overcoming it.
