people are afraid to express affection to anyone they dont want to get romantic with. when one of my friends dads died I told them "I love you brother and Im here for you". I can not relate to certain parts of your post of course, but I think I've expressed my autism on this subject in general.
its strange though as a side note how quickly people forget those bond strengthening aspects of a relationship quickly after the love becomes physical/romantic.
