It's the product of the state taking on the provider role of all people. On the surface it makes sense, as in the past, men would spend all their money they got from work down at the pub, living his wife and kids in destitution. But now the state acts as the father protector, women don't need to offer men anything, and men realize that because of this, there's no bargaining power between them and their spouse. The nation might die because of this, but I think the state will collapse under its debt before that happens.
