I'll expand on my answer by saying I think weird route is you as the player taking control and making choices despite what the game says. Kris has his plans and works behind the scenes towards his goals, but so do you.
By making Noelle stronger and planting the thorn you as the player were putting your eggs in more than one basket considering Kris' rebellious and unpredictable behaviour.
It could end with (You) possessing Noelle, or making her find a suitable vessel, or forcing her to use too much of her powers, who knows.
