Want a massive redpill? No one gives a shit about ultimates or pvp. People only care if pvp gives you a glam which it won't for a long time. Xiv got popular and reached high numbers with shadowbringers. Shadowbringers was carried by its story. Same with endwalker. For better or worse they made xiv better as a whole as their arcs were the culmination of what was set up since arr. It's why people STILL talk about it over dawntrail. The story of the game ended. Ffxiv is undergoing the "mcu" problem. It's infinity saga is over. Everything else just feels like a shitty side quest in comparison.
You guys don't understand how hard the story carried xiv, the laziness of the devs and square themselves have been a thing since shb and only got worse, but people had a setting they loved to fall back on. No, not an mmo, but a setting, like warhammer or star wars.
What's going on in xiv now is like if 40ks end times happened, all of the major figures minus a handful die out, and now some rogue traders are just wandering around the galaxy. The setting itself was harmed by dawntrail.
Dawntrail failed at what made xiv popular. It's story and characters.

Dawntrail failed at what made people like yoshi himself, his interactions with the community
Dawntrail ONLY and I mean ONLY succeeded in allowing modbeasting to flourish and now the only thing to do if you're a longterm player is unsub, make multiple alts, or start gooning.
