Reason why Disney opted for fairy tales was because pretty much the entire world even back then knew about them. They had to maximise the potential target audience because feature length animated film was an unproven and risky concept. Example musicians at the time hated Fantasia and said it cheapened the classical music. Target audience for Disney originally was "Families", something for kids, little nudge wink jokes for adults. Fancy dancing singing princesses for girls and just enough adventure, slapstick and horror to interest boys.
At some point princhess merchandise just took over everything and Disney products became mainly for children only. After the Disney's 90's revolution started petering out the "kids only"-slogan eventually molded into "girls only". Thats the main reason why they bought the Marvel IP in the first place. So Disney would recapture the boy audience with superhero toys. For some reason they just had a massive brainfart of letting women design new products for boys and the result is losing the boy audience completely.
