>original founders are doer/engineer types and hire/promote similar engineer types to lead engineering
>the founders retire/sell out/get bought, whatever
>MBAs and pure business types get hired into the leadership roles instead and have 0 knowledge of how engineering actually works
>they quickly hire jeets for the lower pay/higher hours to make their books look good, as far as they know deliverables are keeping pace so they're happy
>those jeets get into manager/leadership roles and only hire other jeets
>now the problem is rapidly picking up
>eventually they take over 80% of the department
