Sony is basically a high-stakes gambler in a casino, betting big for that one massive payout. The idea is to risk hundreds of millions of dollars for the sake of acquiring billions in live service shit. Whether this is a reasonable gamble or not is one thing (I mean, look up how much gacha games can make), but they're not pissing away money just for the hell of it.
I think with Hyenas and now Fairgames (Marathon eventually too), even the deluded C-suite fucks at Sony realized the risk wasn't worth it.
