I had a phase in my mid-20s where I took this sentiment to heart and said: You have to go to social events and classes to meet new people and maybe even a woman.
So I did 3 things after thinking what could interest me and would interest potential friends or women I would be interested in (I lived in a major university town, this is important):
1. I signed up for a drawing class for beginners
2. I registered for a lecture series that sounded interesting presented at the university over several weeks
3. a French foreign language course
All three had the same problem: The other people attending were exclusively: 50+ age year old women and young couples that never interacted in any way with anyone else besides their significant others.
Remind you, this is a university town supposedly full of young people.
