Squall doesn't whine, he's just a nervous insecure wreck like all of us. From the outside observer he's a cool, calm, calculated individual who makes decisions at key moments. To us the viewer who are privy to his internal monologue, we know that he's actually pic related. He's a teenager with serious trust issues after a bad childhood experience who has a massive amount of responsibility thrust upon him and he's barely keeping it together.
FF8 is a brainlet filter. People who come out of it thinking Squall is emo have video game character frame of references and don't understand how real people think and act.
