You're almost never supposed to go for noten payments in sanma, they're too cheap compared to the average hand value. Consider your hand to have a 0% chance of winning.
Shanpon/entotsu waits are also especially important to consider in sanma, expecially on the dora.

The average riichi in sanma is worth ~10k, and every extra pei adds a little more than 2k in value.
It's rare for it to be merely riichi 2 pei, since it's very easy to get ura.

Fun fact: In complex chiinitsu hands, as long as there aren't any triplets, the final wait can only be along one suji interval. So if you initially see that 8s is a valid winning tile, all you have to do is check 5s and 2s next!
