It's a philosophical difference to talent acquisition and that's fine. Nobody bats an eye when Snell or Glasnow get 9-figure deals even with durability concerns because their upside is so great, and at the end of the day if they bust, the organization can pivot. Yeah there are limits, but no one else can flex their finances like LA. Why can't they have this mentality toward their prospects? I forget the exact number, but something like 70-80% of all prospects will never accumulate 2 WAR. That doesn't mean they're not valuable as spot starters, an extra arm in the pen, injury stand-ins, etc., but there is way too much cautiousness. The only unreasonable package for a reliever this trade deadline was Miller, and that's still for 4.5 years. Duran, Varland, Helsley, Maton, Coulombe, and more were all had for a song.

I would have loved getting Duran but would have hated to have to part with any of our top 4 outfielders, even though none of them are in AA yet, let alone sweetening the deal by adding other prospects, even knowing it's the cost of doing business. I don't have what it takes to have to make those kinds of decisions. I do hold on to what Freidman said in the offseason when he was questioned about why he signed Yates on top of Scott and him saying he hated the trade deadline costs. Looking at the guys expected to come back before the post season-Graterol, Kopech and Scott plus more recently picking up Diaz, Gervais and Stewart and the upside of Henriquez I think there's a good chance guys will be left off the playoff roster who deserve to be there. That is my hope, anyway.

For me, there isn't enough publicly available information to have very strong opinions anymore. My default position has become to just trust the front office. They've had a long string of success no one else has had in the time they're run the team. I also think the Dodgers have had bad luck the past couple seasons with pitcher injuries. The staff ERA was at the top of the league for the prior several seasons before. Friedman likes to roll the dice on high upside arms in both FA and the draft, and we paid (still somewhat paying) a price for that, but we somehow won a chip last season so go figure. Also, can't forget there's a very real possibility Roki Sasaki will be pitching some meaningful innings later this season. I think a lot of the time lost to injuries this year probably could have been pitched through under different circumstances, but the depth has allowed the team to use IL time to clean up mechanics for the guys they want to pitch in the post season and give some load management.

I didn't love the pick in a vacuum, but I do like it in context (also picking 30th lol). His fastball is ASS, but multiple plus pitches and possibly starter-level command. I totally get why the Dodgers love the high-octane guys and they're not the only team, I think there's just a thought (whether that's organizational or industry-wide) that you get the arm with the sickest stuff available because if it works out you got a TOR starter and if it doesn't, you have a spot starter or BP weapon. The problem is injury attrition is at an all-time high and while there are probably many factors, an emphasis on velocity and spin sticks out like a sore thumb. I think a good mix of risk/floor/ceiling is a good thing, same for hitters. You're seeing guys like Kwan and Wilson dominate with a throwback approach that heavily emphasizes contact. For years, the Dodgers have preached a high-K, high-launch angle, high-FB approach for their batters, and while there's definitely been some huge wins, it also limits your pool of talent or risks square-peg-round-hole scenarios. Again, the Dodgers are far from the only team to embrace the elevate-and-celebrate mentality, but it's trends as outsiders you pick up on. Sure I don't know the inner workings of the team, but if I see the inputs and outputs over a decade, you can make some reasonable conclusions.
