Hi guys, I've been wanting to get in shape for a long time and I want to sign up for a gym. It will be my first visit. Do you have any advice or anything?

Try bodyweight training first. Learn how to do push-ups, squats, and pull-ups. You might find it easier to stick with it than with the gym. And it's free.

Yeah okay buddy Ill be useful for once. First of all, you need to learn how to train muscles. Sounds weird I know but youll get it in a few years if you stick to it. It takes time to learn how each muscle is supposed to feel when youre training. For example if you start doing dumbbell rows youll just yank them up for a while. But eventually youll get to a point where you really feel that movement and what muscles are involved. This takes practice and at the beginning you should focus on learning how your body moves weight. Thats also the reason why people recommend basic compound (e.g. using lots of muscles) exercises like the bench press and the squat. As an absolute beginner youll make lots of progress in muscular development no matter what you do, so focussing on these big compound lifts is a good way to start. You need to also understand that there is no magic exercises. Some are great for you and shit for others or good for a while and then quite mid etc. After youve spent a few months getting to learn how your body moves weight and feel muscles you get to expand and try more exercises. Be curious. Have fun. Try new shit. Lots of guys are hyper focused on a super fixed routine that consists of rigid exercise orders and sets and reps. That works for some but for me it was always more like "I need a chest exercise today, lets see what Im in the mood for". Other than the movements themselves and your overall body feel you need to learn how to train with intensity. The biggest driver for muscle development is in fact muscular failure and getting close to it is what makes your sets effective. Now of yourse you dont know what that means yet but as a start try going as far as you can without hurting yourself when it comes to reps/weight. You want those muscles to fail. In the beginning youll probably do a lot of sets that are half assed. Its normal, dont worry. Just try to get to know that high intensity point where your body actually fails.

Further, you need to sleep a lot and eat good food with lots of protein. This stuff is taxing on your body and recovering is very important. Sleep. Relax. Stretch. And its fine to take a day off if youre really not feeling it (given you usually get your workouts in). Its a marathon, not a sprint. Go look for a beginners gym routine and follow it for a little bit but also consider what I said. If youre doing set after set of 5 reps and not feeling them at all, try going for more reps. Its about listening to your body and pushing yourself. Another general advice is: dont be afraid. Ask for help, ask people to show you something, be open and curious. And nobody in the gym cares that youre a scrawny dyel faggot. Nobody even thinks about you. And if you approach them most people will gladly help you. Dont Listen to influencers too much. Listen to your body. Enjoy the journey and always keep tinkering with your routines. As a super basic rule you want to hit a muscle twice a week with 4-6 sets each. Maybe more, who knows, go figure it out. Its genuinely fun. Wagmi anon

As a beginner literally any routine should work but once you get stronger you should prioritise lifting the heaviest weights you can as that will grow you faster long term (think deadlift, squat, bent over row, olympic lifts).

Getting adequate protein is important. At the bare minimum you should be eating a big protein heavy meal after training and if you want to get big you should be eating protein every meal.

most important thing early on is developing the habit of regular training

don't try and "optimise" by doing an "optimal" routine that you hate because the internet says so.

Do what you enjoy.

Here are my tips OP, doing gym-science for 5+ years now:

1. If leg days are a nuisance and very exhausting: just skip.
2. Always bulk, never cut. Cutting is for women and fascists.
3. Don't listen to faggots saying >MUh cLeAn BuLkInG. Noone ever got big eating only chicken breast and brokkoli.
4. Don't waste your time with deadlifts, it's a powerlifting exercise and you don't wanna look like Eddie Hall do you?
5. You do incline chest press with dumbbells, lateral raises with dumbbells, some sort of rows on a machine, lat pulldowns and dumbbell shrugs. Skullcrushers with an ez bar for triceps and for biceps you do standing dumbbell curls right in front of the mirror where everyone can see you.
6. Make sure to grunt very loudly when women are in your proximity.

That's all you need to know, show your ex gf who's boss and godspeed polandbro.

First, define your goal. Then find a diet that suits your goals. Do whatever training you want and sleep well. Just don’t get too cocky with weights and do it progressively so you don’t get injured

Get low in your squats. Otherwise 90% of it is going to the gym when your routine says to go, do that however you need to.
