You can always just reapply the paint to the raised and flatter parts to clean them up while retaining shading in recesses. Give 1 or 2 Duncan videos a watch, should help you get back into it.

Usually a combination. I like to use a thin layer of pic related to add some irregularity to my base, then wait for it to dry and glue some gravel and such down. Its also nice if you want to stick stuff "into the mud" like sprue bricks, broken rocks, etc., you give the paste about 20 or 30 minutes to start to firm up then stick your bits in.

In small areas you can use it straight after wiping the excess on a palate, especially if the spot is encassed in trim, like that leg.

texture paste is texture + acrylic paint. You don't have to prime it.
>>96299994
Depends on the paste and what you want. Some dry pretty gloss so paint doesn't adhere too well. Some are matte or rough, so you can paint straight over. Generally you can just paint over though. This blood was just Vallejo clear water paste that I did a layer of dark red paint over, highlighted the crests of the waves with some lighter red and then used blood for the blood god all over the top.

That's a tough one. Especially without an airbrush. Like the other anon said, blame sculptors who sculpt unpaintable details.
Your best bet is to paint those all a dark shade color before doing your proper base coats and ideally with an airbrush you would automatically brighten up the slightly more exposed parts.
But the general advice would be to just make them dark and then paint the stuff you can actually reach. You definitely don't want to keep them a bright red color.

Ive also used superglue in the past on the connecting links to try and stiffen chains, I can't really think of any other method. I don't have any but I suppose a very thin superglue would probably work even better as it wouldn't clump up and could be applied more liberally thorough the chains length

This style of sprue and the insistence monopose models seems to lend better to a process of cutting out the bits with making one guy at a time. I tried making multiple Custodian Wardens at once, and one of them just ended up being taller than the others while one is a bit shorter, given the torso connections were all kind of different. I don't think most will notice anyway, but it still kind of bugs me.
Regardless, went to strictly building one guy at a time from that point.

Define rich Anon. If you have a house, you are not necessarily that rich, but you certainly (most likely) have a spare room for hobby stuff if you dont have 3 kids or something.
To get a house, you can buy it of course, or rent one, or simply wait until your parents pass away.
Even buying one does not mean you hand over that amount of cash in one go. Usually you pay it off over 20-40 years, and its not really that much different from paying rent each month.
But for sure, some youtubers are rich, thats pretty obvious. Or they are very good at pretending at least.
>overseas for holidays
>rich
Come on now.. A plane ticket and 10 days hotel stay cost not really that much. Having 2-3k to "waste" every year is not rich at all. And it really isn't much, it comes down to 150-300 per month which you put aside. Why would you even go to work if you cant afford a week or two for holiday? If you cant have a little bit of luxury, you can just stick to welfare.

I wonder if this is Les Edwards. His signature isn't visible in the picture I posted, but I know he did a lot of work for GW, including the cover art for some of the other GW/MB boxed games.
If it is Edwards, that's almost an unfair comparison. His masterpieces predate the Dark Age of Technology, so you know he accomplished all of this without any digital tools or techniques; it's all traditional.

Also, strangely, removed a bit of paint in the process (pic related), previously white spirit was not damaging paint. Unless it's just matter of some thin regions.

Nah, while it wouldn't be highlights of the shieldβs shape like we normally do when painting miniatures, actual heraldry IRL often gets painted with highlights even when on a flat surface (or portraying a flat surface on a flat surface...)

Would that have been done on shields, though? I'm not an expert, but it feels like that heraldry on a shield meant for use in war would be done in a simpler, more durable/easily redo-able style.

Yeah, the emblazoning doesnβt mention shading/highlights, or any number of other specific details. It's up to the artist (likely with some input from the client) to decide in which style exactly the specific depiction of the coat of arms he's creating will be executed.
Though I guess this also draws up another important point: devices on shields needn't be specifically heraldic.

I also want to solicit some input. To note, the main focus is the surviving crusader so I don't want to take away from that. I also plan to have several torn banners and spears sticking up around the battlefield. To that end, should there be a 3rd dead crusader or would that clutter it up? busy design, but not a mess, you can easily tell where each ogre begins and ends, as well as admire each one an an individual.

the enviroment is carefully crafted, individual bricks, a marble effect with fucking art on it, and you can see its matches the doorways in the background too.

busy designs, lots of BITS on each ogre, but still a mostly coherent vibe across them, they even homage the original with the poses and weapons on most of the ogres,
the enviroment is kinda lackluster, i THINK i can see some more ogres in the background there, but only because im looking for them
i don't hate either, but i really do dig the older one more, because i've always hated the effect WoW had on fantasy, in just about everybit of fantasy i read as a kid had ogres being basically just big dumb strong guys, andre the giant in princess bride was how i imagined them most of my life, but WoW making them literal knuckledragging retards in loincloths feels wrong, so the newer art kinda bugs me since you could tell me it was a hearthstone card of the orcish horde, and i would like it more.

I have a an airbrush that I haven't touched in a year, maybe two. I'm about to start making my dream Warhammer armies and wanna do it right first round, and an airbrush would help immensely I think.
My main problems are:
>It's fucking loud and cumbersome, are there any other types of airbrush I could swap for this one? I see there are electronic ones now but I thought I heard that was bullshit and ineffective?
>Do I actually fucking need air paints? Can I not just mix 1:1 paint and water and have it go just as well? I don't want an entire extra library of paint just for my brush
>Should I get flow improver or mixer or whatever it's called? Will that be better to use than water, since waters got minerals and whatever the hell?

Air compressors are just loud. That's how it be. You have to pay beyond what you should for a quieter one. If you're in an apartment like me, just make sure you do it during the daytime so you don't bother people.
Air paints are just pre-thinned paints. You should be thinning your own with thinner and/or flow improver. Check out Vince's guide on airbrushing.

So haven't seen the Redgrass (may the RG schizo avert his eyes) sheet in person, but let me hazzard a guess - is it possible it's neoprene? From the pictures, it looks like the mousepad material. Problem with that is that I've seen the core sponge sold only in black colour and white/neutral grey would be way better

Since I have to wait for that oil wash to dry properly or at least at minimum and didn't want to waste time, I tried out cheap airbrush with mini-compressor I got 2 years ago. First time using airbrush felt weird, had to hold compressor with elbow since it would "move" while activating during work and cleaning was taking longer than actual using. That technique with first pressing trigger and then pulling back and forth feels odd, I kept releasing pressure instead. I guess I will stick to brush but maybe it will have some use for saving money on spraycan primers or varnishes. Sorry for some sort of blogposting but wanted to tell someone without risking being called out for not using expensive setup with lacquer paints.

If it's the application that's poorly understood, I guess it could be worse.
Okay, serious question - if I would rather use airbrush for priming/varnishing rather than painting, does it makes sense to even use something better than my current cheap model + mini-compressor? When I check YT guides, it's all "double piston compressor with a tank is a must" or recommending AK basic line (that cost, from what I checked, more than twice the one I got with mentioned set) but single-piston compressor cost equivalent of 90β¬ at cheapest. Sounds like awfully expensive for intended supplementary tool.

If you ONLY want to prime with it (which kinda defeats the purpose of having an airbrush, imo), you can just get some cheap chinesum pistol with whatever compressor that fits.
Or, you can get something like fengda bd 180 which is cheap as fuck but will also allow you to spray some pretty detailed stuff if you get some normal compressor with a tank, all in all ~$200.

Okay. But that compressor moving around was a bit risky, plus what Jose Davinci suggest with moving trigger back and forth made it keep turning on and off, no idea if that won't cause issues later.

Compressor with a tank is usually recommended because it can have a big impact on how your airbrush performs. With a tank you don't (shouldn't) get drops in pressure which can lead to speckling and spitting. Its also one of the bigger costs of getting started, so experienced painters will recommend spending the extra $20 or so to get the tank knowing the benefits. If you just want to try out airbrushing there is nothing wrong with trying one of those usb all in one airbrush compressor things, just know that it won't be 100% a direct comparison to using an airbrush with tank. Honestly the cheap airbrushes are fine, I've tried an iwata and a H&S that my friend has and went back to the master G233 $30 brush. That's another thought, maybe there is an flgs nearby that has painting classes that may have an airbrush that you can try out to see if you want to invest in one, worth a shot.

My lads are coming along nicely, although I am by no means a speedy painter
I mixed up a brown I am happy with for leathers and started slapping it on, it contrasts nicely and maintains the warmth with this green
Threw in a few dibs of red, some white on one of the cauldron symbols and to prep a visor for the warm yellow coming later
Unsure what to do with the black up-armour, I put a coat of black on but I was thinking some sort of dry brush with a dark grey to give it a chalky plasticy look might be nice
Long ways to go yet.

I followed our Black Templar lad's recipe for black armour for Lemartes here, and then shortly after that repeated it for the Death Company he leads. On top of an undercoat of Ace Hardware Gray Spray Primer, I used Black Legion Contrast Paint coated with Nuln Oil. That makes for a really smooth satisfying start to black armour.
Can you paint just (or mostly) with Contrast paints? Probably, but it might not give you the results you crave.
It's vitally importantly to learn what the different Contrast paints do before you slather them all over your models. For example, you might think that both Blood Angels Red and Baal Red would be equally suitable for painting red Blood Angels. They produce distinctly different effects, however, and - again - might not give you what you were looking for.
Huh. Guess we need a new thread soon.
