I started playing Magic with the Mothman deck last year.

Now I homebrew my own orzov and monoblack decks and have fun.

I tried Standard a couple times. It's alright. But I admit I'm a casual player just here to throw cardboard until my Kill Team opponent shows up.

All of my commander decks suck. They're not creative, clever, or strong. At most they're upper bracket 3. Every time I try to add some "clever" tech or deep cuts it never works out. It'll end up being a staple card for the deck archetype and the same as every other deck for that commander. I'm the commander player all the content creators make fun of for "being bad at magic". Its making me hate the game because I hate my stupid brain.

I feel your pain everytime I wanna play with some fun stuff like perplexing chimera it just gets board wiped because "noo you can't just make eveyone have a steal spell" the fundamental problem with commander is the rule 0 they harp on it as a catch all to make it the players fault on why they're not having fun but the reality is everyone likes winning at board games so they spend $300 on a fancy new mid range cliche and either pubstomp precon players or play the same game over and over again in higher bracket 3 hell. I guess. It feels like I've been playing long enough to not be considered new. Maybe I'm just frustrated. For example I just built a infinite guideline station deck (before it was on game knights or whatever) and it ended up being a wubrg goodstuff deck with a splash of artifact synergy. If uniqueness is what you're after, try looking at legendaries below the top 100 on EDHrec. Otherwise starting out with goodstuff like you lamented isn't something to be ashamed of. My friendship group is going rabid for this and SM (I.e. the same group bar one person that hate anything Japanese on principle). I don’t doubt SM will sell well but I am interested to see how much of a drop-off will happen with Avatar. It’s nowhere near as popular or culturally relevant anymore as FF or SM (former is arguably in the same boat but has nearly 40 years of content to draw from), the follow-up show was controversial (only watched original as a kid and never bothered with follow-ups) and they’re only making a third series after 20 years since Last Airbender first launched.

When I got back in people hated Genn for Totem Shaman (I had been a 2014 day 1 Shaman player so I made the deck too), but the power creep over the past year and a half has been insane. Shudderwock Shaman had been a thing since Witchwood and then in Wild sometime last year it just stopped exisiting. I also still kek that WoW had a better Hearthstone 10th Anniversay in 2024 that Hearthstone itself did. I’m still fucking furious at what they did to Arthas a few years back and I hadn’t touched the game since 2013.

I really do like Yu-Gi-Oh's focus on archetypes. There's so much to offer. Boxers, angels, heroes, mermaid singers, mechanically enhanced athletes, several varied flavors of dragons, girls, and big robots. There really is a lot to pick from. Shame most of it is pretty much unplayable past a certain point but there's at least some archetype there to enjoy and enough support for them to sometimes revitalize an old theme.

You get tribal decks like werewolves and slivers which are fully dedicated to their archetypes with any leftover space for anything else, probably as close as magic goes to that space. It's a linear vs modular game design preference.

Yeah that's true. In a sense it does exist in Magic. Werewolves, Slivers, Eldrazi too, all very much are in about the right space as archetypes in Yu-Gi-Oh are in. Werewolves helped a lot by being all from the same plane. Most other tribes don't really have a consistent theming or feel like those three do. I like the design space archetypes provide but I do appreciate how the open endedness of Magic means almost any set can have something you can use in any color you're playing which means there's less sets with nothing for you if you have your mind set one one or two focused decks.

I wish it did. I was hoping all those cards with "mounts/crews/saddles with X power instead" would apply to Station, but I was not surprised.

Today I was scrolling through EDHREC and seeing just how many decks have the "top cards" all be universal goodstuff staples.
It got me thinking, with all this UB stuff, we end up with decks running a mix of...

>Sci fi cards
>Modern horror cards
>Cyberpunk neo cards
>Cards from various franchises conflicting in tone.

Really makes me think...Should I just "theme" all my decks? Fuck running a chunky soup of conflicting themed cards just because they're staples at doing xyz.
I think at this point I'd rather play casual commander have my werewolf deck be mostly Innistrad cards, my Knights deck be all medieval fantasy, my fox samurai deck be all old/neo kamigawa, etc.
Otherwise you end up with Marvel Superhero supported by rhystic study, with space themed combat tricks, and surprise visits from Ulamog the elder god. Those decks just seem like so much slop. Like mixing all the beautiful colours of the rainbow together to get brown "goodstuff" slop.

I think I just don't have enough investment in the game to care either way. Last time I bought a booster pack was during War of the Spark, last single I bought was from the brother's war set. Every now and then I grind a week or so on Arena to play a draft. Othewise, I just play a couple of "draft" round in draftmancer and I'm satisfied. Just becoming more and more detached from this market.

I never gave a fuck about Magic's STORY. I don't think anyone can honestly say they did, even if they were buying the fucking books.
What I cared about was Magic's SETTING. Even without reading some shitty blog post about that time when Jace went to the doctor to get some rash on his ballsack checked out, you can absorb a feel for Magic just by looking at card art and names.
That's what I was interested in. I got into Magic for Magic. For original characters in original worlds. That's why hat sets were the beginning of the end and merely a stepping stone into UB. WotC just stopped putting in as much effort.

I am not interested in playing some hollow shell that's just a vehicle for other companies to shill their wares.

Red is by far the most popular monocolor on EDHREC. Part of it is because there's a lot of quite decent red cards that aren't very expensive because despite being good they're too slow for 1v1 formats, and partly because red commanders are often wicked busted.

Kind of. The strixhaven schools aren't a 1:1 equivalent to Harry Potter but the basic premise is pretty close. A magic school where different groups compete against each other and it's filled with teachers of dubious origina (Looking at you, professor onyx) and there's an evil wizard that people are trying to keep sealed/prevent from coming back from the dead. The thematics of each school is different and there are no dragon patrons in harry potter, but there are ghost patrons instead. I'd say Strixhaven is about 70%-80% of the basic premise of harry potter, with the Twins taking the place of Harry and friends.

Bloomburrow was good, but it was mostly a self-contained set and in the works for a long time and EoE is "ok", also completely forgetable. You can stick your head in the sand all you want, but the quality of the settings have been going on a downward spiral for years, with small blips around stuff like Brother's wars and such because they are just aping the stuff that was already set in the past, and even so in a weaker way.

The Avatar (before Korra, we're treating it as noncanon) was the spirit of the world incarnated as a human. The world is everything. The entire show is about balance. Aang was capable of things associated with black, his first firebending teacher even had to warn him against pursuing firebending just to have the power to destroy his enemies. The black in Aang is just balanced out by his other qualities. In the Avatar state he would absolutely have black because it is all of his incarnations in one, and not all of them were especially moral people, literally Aang's last 4 lives all told him to kill Ozai rather than try to find another way to defeat him. If anything, Aang was at his most destructive and indifferent in the Avatar state and was frequently a danger to innocent people.

And then if you want to treat Korra as canon, Vaatu is meant to reincarnate in Raava so there's always literal evil in the avatar spirit while Vaatu is reincarnating.

I'm ambivalent towards UB and mechanically I enjoyed the FF one.

I hate the fact that WotC clearly doesn't know what the fuck to do with their own IP in a narrative sense and it just giving up on it completely to just pay for actually successful franchises that mostly have nothing to do with MTG or the usual aesthetic/settings MTG used to portray.
