Okay let's go through the steps.
Do you have a paintbrush and fingers/hands?
>>96323573
ok so I'll try to do a step by step
1. Prime the miniatures, DO NOT use hardware prime especially that 2x paint and primer combo. use something like mr surfacer, tamiya, army painter, vallejo, or citadel. as an aside, mr surfacer has self leveling thinner in it and provides a smooth surface even if you accidentally over spray.
2. consider using a prime or secondary spray color for your base coat: vallejo, citadel, and army painter have a large variety of colors to help with getting your primary color applied. you can also try tamiya spray color on a primed surface and a lighter color of your base coat as an easy way to get a nice zenithal for your base color.
3. hand painting: I recommend using a wet pallet but regardless of what you decide to do this part is important.
HOW TO THIN YOUR PAINT:
add water or better yet leveling thinner if you have it. test the paint on your skin; if you can not see your skin texture the paint is too thick, if you can still see your skin color the paint is too thick, if you can see your skin texture but not your skin color the paint is the perfect consistency.
you will likely need 2 coats for total coverage, wait for each coat to dry completely.
4. highlights: this part can be a little tricky. for chunky highlights simply use a thin and slightly long brush with a pointy tip and do not over load the brush with paint. simply trace the border of the panels. use the side of your brush for edge highlights. you can simply add white and cover smaller sections to add a nice color transition.
5. mistakes happen, if you get paint when filling in the eyes or something just have a dry brush on hand and use it to clean the over spill. some paint will still be visible, this is fine. let it dry and come back with a close approximation to the base color and simply touch it up.
I'm definitely missing some stuff but if you want to practice consider getting a bag of army men and just test on them.

Still out of thinner. I've stripped all of my test models and a few others I wanted to repaint, rebuilt most of them and primed them. Ready to paint once I'm able to get the thinner. I was tinkering on my word bearer scheme before, want to get back to it lol.

cont: almost forgot
washes:
easy way- mix army painter dark tone or nuln oil, army painter soft tone or agrax earthshade, lamian medium, water, and 2 or 3 drops of dish soap. mix it well; a empty dropper bottle is perfect for this and you can find them at any arts and crafts store. and simply apply it over the mini making sure to wipe away the excess in the process.
less easy but better way: use a sharp brush and take a mixture of the wash of your choice and matt medium or water. make sure your brush is not over loaded and simply add the wash into each panel line. it takes longer but it will give you a better result.
also do the wash before highlights
pps: if you use tamiya color spray for the base coat just be aware that ts is usually glossy and as is flat

We're on an anime website so don't hate me, but I'm surprised there isn't an anime or manga written by some autistic mini-painter who has the protags go through the process of learning mini painting week-over-week and just using it as a thinly veiled way to demo different painting techniques or theory.
Gunpla has a series like that. There should be a mini painting one that follows the same tropes.

Gunpla is magnitudes more popular than warhammer and even more so other mini painting. Multiply that in Japan and Asia by a hundred.
Also gundam already have their own animes, so an anime about gunpla would be a nice side content.
They would rather make a warhammer anime first than make a mini painting anime.

they are marketed as a magic bullet to get an army painted in no time because that's what they were designed for, many people do that to play with painted models instead of greytide, and most of the time it looks like shit
however, if you are not a lazy fuck that hates painting it's just another tool (like washes or inks), you can use it for basecoats and then paint shadows, highlights etc over a more interesting basecoat that a plain one, or use them as washes or whatever
get some, try them

Sprinkling sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) on cyanoacrylate glue causes it to harden very quickly into a "frosted" (I can't think of a more apt word to describe how it looks) plastic state. This is a neat trick you can use for filling gaps, as you can sand the resulting material smooth.
This works with both gel and less viscous superglue, but I don't think I have to tell you which of those will flow into the gap better!

That guy that makes giant vats of sprue goo had a few videos using it making pressmolds of GW parts.
No idea what the channel's name is though, I "do not recommend this channel"-ed him out of sheer existential horror.
Official site says don't go over 180 degrees F, and to use a double boiler if using on the stovetop.
So you would bring a small pot of water to boil then reduce heat gradually until it is no longer boiling. (If no thermometer). Then adding a bowl that fits on top of the small pot to melt the polymer into. Same way you would melt chocolate if not using a microwave.

So I'm planning painting my ork Kommandos next and I want to paint some camouflage patterns on their clothes. Each kommando gets a unique camo pattern. They are going to be based on "savanna" terrain, so I'm mostly doing african animals but I accept animals from other regions. The ones I've thought about (but not 100% confirmed) are:
>Tiger
>Leopard
>Zebra
>Crocodile (scuba grot)
>Giraffe
>Hyena
>Cheetah
>Flamingo (squig)
>Wild dog
>Salamander
Need more animal camo ideas, list your own.
Did second try with airbrush today, with primer and white ink. I wanted to clean needle but have no idea how to take it out - manual says "loose the needle chuck" but attached schematic does not have part of that name, only "needle chucking nut" and "needle chucking guide". It's really hard to make good 2 piece mold equivalents out of Oyumaru. There are reasons you see it being primarily used for press molds. Be prepared to make dozens of attempts to get one good cast.
Try to make a one piece mold where you wrap the polymer completely around the head leaving the neck protruding as the area where you will pack the modeling putty into. Pushing the the head into the warm oyumaru and attempting to pack it around firmly so there are no air gaps will probably work best. You can make some tiny cuts once it's cool to ease the head out and make slamming the putty in with a spatula easier.
It's going to take a lot of tries, but it's low stress and the materials are cheap.

the cone-shaped nut on the right hand side of that image, turn it counterclockwise (looking from the right), and it should loosen it so you can pull it out. The chuck is the whole assembly, but the chuck nut is the part of the chuck to release the needle from the chuck, if that makes sense.

personally i would recommend getting a smaller more basic paint set in normal sized bottles and buying individual paints as you need them.
some considerations:
are you actually going to use all those different washes? some of those are probably unnecessary and a waste of money
there's a lot of browns in there which is definitely a waste because brown is the most forgiving colour to mix yourself
those bright pinks are fun colours but if you don't have a plan to use them then they're a waste
the metallics in that set will be their regular game color metallics which like most metallic paints are just not very good. the vallejo metal color range is the best metallic paint i have used and i will never go back to normal game color/shitadel metallics again. imo those metallics are wasted slots and especially if you are a beginner you should just source your metallics from the vallejo metal color range as you need them. i have always hated using metallic paints because most of them are just shit, if you are a beginner one of the best pieces of advice you are going to get is to invest in good metallic paints
these big paint sets seem like a good idea to beginners but there are many reasons to avoid them. i like vallejo paints so it's probably not a complete waste of money but you can probably do better

I've gone though an entire 50 pack of 15ml dropper bottles and 20+ 30ml bottles. And own nearly the entire Daler Rowney acrylic ink range at this point. As well as loads of dry pigments for SFX weirdness. The basic recipe is just so versatile, though Liquitex ultra matte is way better than the recommended matte.
Getting to where I feel like a drug dealer when dropping off washes for my gaming circle.
The hardest part is not "breaking" the binder by adding too much of the water/surfactant when going for the thinnest wash but instead cutting back on the inks. You can always thin more on the palette with some Lahmian Medium or equivalent. And I swatch constantly in a dedicated sketchbook so I can compare mixes.
Still searching for the perfect old Devlan Mud and Nuln Oil.

I must have had a bad bottle then. It was pretty bad like always lightening up the washes to be too bright and too thick for agitators to properly mix up the stuff when I switched to regular matte medium it was practically night and day in quality.
>Devlan mud
I made a brown wash that resembled strong tone. I made another one to modify but I think the results should more or less be the same.

Cock knight is finished.
Finished this slaughterpriest. I like it a lot but I think I rely too much on guilliman flesh and TTC flesh wash to tie my skin tones together. I would prefer a paler skin tone with darker red recesses but this one looks cool too. Itβs more virile and angry than a paler, blood-shaded, sinister skin tone like on the box art. Was surprisingly fast to do.

I have a question about airbrush usage - when I see various videos, people in general, when using dual action variants, press trigger (for air) and gently pull trigger until it starts spraying - then hold it in this position. Meanwhile on Jose Davinci instruction video, he shows and advices to instead going back and forth with trigger (plus, he constantly clean needle with his fingers), essentially "puffing" with it. I'm confused which method to use (I tried to do that back and forth movement, I kept releasing trigger instead).

Both are correct. I mean you don't just blast with a rattlecan full force when spraying with one, you pulse it as you go back and forth. But as you learned, with an airbrush this requires more dexterity. It's just practice, and thus is a more advanced technique. So obviously in a beginner's tutorial video, it's gonna be the basics to get you going with best practices for a solid foundation.

NTA, but I always seem to struggle with flat brushes. I still have the real cheap ones I started out with (really never had a use for them at that point) but whenever I've tried using them they don't seem to hold water or paint terribly well. It may very well be because they're from a cheap 20 pack, but I feel like there's something I'm missing. The hairs always clump up instead of staying flat.

next one would be a dedicated roller
or cutting each brick individually
you can also find some plastic packaging with appropiate texture and pour plaster on it
for a small batch of single model bases i woudl recomment cutting the rbicks by hand, you can use any plastic or foam you have around and need no extra tools

You can get textured plastic sheets. Get a circle cutter or a hole punch the right size and you can just glue them to the top of your bases before mounting your minis. Some companies that do mdf terrain also sell laser etched cardboard of mdf toppers in common basing sizes these days.
Failing that just using regular plastic sheets of varying thicknesses is also a very easy and effective way to do stone floors. Also a good alternative for slotta bases or puddle bases if you cannot be arsed to cut the extra metal off and pin the metal to the base. You just have to cut the tiles yourself first, but you can get very nice results for little work. Press some coarse sandpaper on some tiles, file bevels, crack tiles etc for extra detail.

'miniature' here refers to miniature canvas painting, not miniature models
shorter brushes means less reservoir, less moisture so faster drying of the paint on the brush, usually not good for acrylic paints
series 33 is the recommended one for our purposes

intent, model color is the range for historic stuff, so they have colors matched to army uniforms and the like, 'game' was initially designed to color match citadels range back then, now is just another range designed for 'fantasy' models, so colors are more saturated and more matt, they used to have a different formula too, but now it's the same
there are some colors that are the same in both ranges with different names

Hey, the eyes look pretty good I think. They could use a little dot of white, but it can be tough to do without a nice brush.
There is also the option of trying those tiny nail art dotting tools, they would probably be good for that kind of finishing touch thing.

Each paint brant has good paints and some shitter paints. If you are buying another brands copy of a color you already have and like then you are a sucker. Buy whatever brand you can get from your local store cause paying for shipping on a single 5 dollar thing of paint sucks.
But if I had no paints right now, starting from scratch, and had the I dont care about the cost money and wanted to buy an entire set catalogue of paints, Id be most interested in dunkens paints. Vallejo used to be good but its shit now unless you like bubbles in your paint. May citadel paints are great but many people cant stand the paint pots.

practice first, but if you wanted to try,
>brush a damp (not 'wet') brush over the surface and then quickly dot the white. if you're not careful and it's too wet this will also let the white spread, but it shouldn't if the amount of moisture is right just before it all evaporates
or
>dilute white paint, get brush wet, dab on wet paper town just enough to point the tip, scoop up white just on the tip and try. It wouldn't be good for painting, but can work for dots
or
>if you have the brush control, and probably magnifying glasses, do what you've been doing but draw the tip in tiny circles the size of the dot, eventually it will release the paint and once the surface tension is broken it should flow past the dried tip.
Practice somewhere else though maybe if you want.
Also fuck white paint.

People have no idea what they are missing out on when switching to well made brushes. There are "cheap" good brushes of course. And synthetic hairs have come a really long way. Not cheap, though that is relative, when a single Escoda Sable can be be 50+ bucks.

thanks anon. Regular dice cases are actually too small unless you are using tiny 28mm heroic minis and even then its very limited. I use the 'Large' Chessex dice cases because, one, they comfortably fit 32mm scale minis with room to create some environment/story telling and two, the base is vaulted so I can easily hide magnets underneath. The goal is to give them something they can toss in their bag and not have to worry about it getting broken but also serves as a decent display case. Probably too much money to spend on them but they don't need to know that.

The bubbles form in the brush then slide onto the models too. Vallejo got bought and the C suit demanded they increase profit margines. They rolled out a "whole new formula" which is code for "we made the paint shittier and cheaper". You dont just rework the worlds most popular brand of paint that people have been using for 30 years for no reason. They could have made a new line but they discontinued their old one.

Im quite pleased with how I did the torso too. I cut these 1mm wide slots right down the back of the torso, then heated up the part in water to bend them into their final shape. I made the gap a bit too big so I put a little shim in there.
I do all my rough gap filling with baking soda and extra thin super glue. Fills instantly so no waiting for putty to dry.

Just give them some time to dry. I found that after ~45mins there is very little smuding and after 4h you can stab them with a stiff brush and nothing happens anymore.
Great for blacklining, freehand detail or eyes.

Btw for fellow terrain bros, Vallejo makes 500 ml bottles of varnish. It's a water based polyurethane, like GWs. Very durable. Only thing is you want to keep things finished with it out of UV light because that can yellow polyurethane varnishes. There are also products that can be coated over it to mitigate that issue though.

I didn't really think about that until you pointed it out. What should I do to make it less samey? I can only think of using brighter paints, and making the aquilla white-ish.

lamenters don't give a lot to work with in their established scheme, but using silver for gold on some of the metal areas and adding some variety in the gun and squad/company markings may help the composition.

I've got a jar of texture paste that's starting to dry up a bit on me so I have been trying to use a bunch up. Some folks will tell you texture pastes are a waste of money or that they are just dirt in some paint. Maybe true with citadel and some other brands, but AK interactive pastes are actually made using some sort of gel or plastic beads and bits. This gives the advantage that you can actually sand the paste when it is fully cured. You can also paint over the texture paste if you wish to do so for any reason. Obviously you will want to sand before laying any paint down if you intend to do so. The only real difference between stuff like Desert Sand or Dark Earth or any of their products is the size and consistency of the beads. In desert sand it is more uniform, as you would expect with sand. With something like dark earth you've got different sized chunks in there to give it a more varied consistency and finish, as you might expect comparing soil to sand.
Even if you use loose basing material, throwing down a layer of texture paste can help fill in spots you miss with the mix etc. If you're working with minis with integral bases (like most metal figures) you can also use the texture paste to hide the raised integral basing. Even moreso if you have a base with a lip. I use Rubicon models bases. Both because I mainly work with metal and resin, and the lip comes in handy to create a seamless appearance. They are also designed very well because they taper slightly at the top and bottom so that you can actually handle the minis by the base. I always found GW bases and other bevelled bases difficult to pick up on a game table.
Anyways I'm making a little fire pit thing here. Gonna paint the sand to an earthy brown and then cover it with some scatter mix, add some little stumps or a bench or something. Maybe a pile of firewood. Gonna fill the pit with some ashy pigments and a loose basing mix I've got that will work well to represent a regularly used fire pit.

3 tools I highly recommend for anyone who does fine base work or other tricky placements. On the right your basic angled tweezers. In the middle is a 5 prong grabbing tool. Then finally on the left are self closing tweezers. These can be incredibly handy. They work just like any other tweezers, but in reverse. You apply pressure to let loose whatever you are manipulating with them. So you can have something gripped in them, set it down and apply a dab of glue or cement or whatever and then grab them with the piece you are attaching ready to go.
I use the tweezers a lot more than the grab tool but the grab tool is good too and has come in handy with plenty of projects. Definitely get yourself a set of self closing tweezers if you don't have any though.

Picture of the 5 prong grabber. You work it by pushing down a plunger on the back end, like a syringe, which extends the 5 prongs into a claw like in the picture. As you release the plunger and they retract the claw shrinks down and clutches whatever you are manipulating. I use it for putting larger stuff into tricky spots usually. I could definitely live without it, but they do come in handy from time to time. If I had to recommend a single tool between the three I'd go with the self closing tweezers. This stuff isn't all that expensive though, especially if you are used to paying citadel prices.

As an example, no offense to the anon who painted this car but it's not 'eavy metal. However, it's not supposed to be, and a fun paint job doesn't need to be super tight.
