In a very sparse newly acquired land, really a single human village surrounded by wilderness, the elves of the dark court sent one of the noble daughters to oversee their military outpost they use to keep control of the area.
Loreleia, along with her friend the blonde scholar Talashanta, hear from the locals worrying news. Warbands of barbarians, the dead walking, and worse: elves of the light court are afoot.
Hiring a local human as a guide, her harpy sister in law, and a fierce halfling ranger from town, the merry band seeks to meet these dangers head on.
Also tagging along is Talashanta's student, a human with a bow. She will get that letter of recommendation even if it kills her.

First mission was to map further, as per the request of a human nobleman.
In the process it didn't stop fucking raining, causing a marsh to form and for lady Loreleia to get stuck in a bog. She ended up naked, but kept her bastard sword, as she was pulled out.
The location ended up being a fruit grove, and it'll surely be beneficial to the village.

Investigation led to the mist-covered foothills, where the signs of an ambush are apparent. Following the muck, they spy the ruffians counting their loot among the dead merchants. Barbarians.
The fight was actually over quickly, with the halfling being useless but the student beating her foe to death in one turn. She really wants that letter of recommendation.
Lady Loreleia slew a foe, as did Talanashta, but the harpy was injured. The carnage made the lieutenant and remaining warrior woman quit the field in terror.
As they gathered the goods, a survivor from the caravan was moved by their heroism and pledged himself to Lady Loreleia's cause. She could use camp aide so she accepted.

Pic related, her initial character design was to have eagle across her whole face with wings spread over her eyes similar to a domino mask to give off a hardcore shaman appearance, as she was supposed to be the Neanderthal-esque medicine-woman that'll just as easily give you a poultice as carve open your skull to let the spirits out. However, the drawfriend interpretation of the first art turned it into more of a face framer to have it show up in the pose. Then through actually playing the campaign, she had a character arc of moving from her rough tribal facade, to being allowed to express feelings and vulnerability to a group of close allies, and into the role of pure cinnamon roll, so now I've started to think that tattoos don't really fit her that much anymore. Still a druidic berserker that can, has, and will tear a jugular out with her bare teeth, or cook a dish of otherwise harmless plants to "poison" an oligarch with medicine-neutralizers, but now it's a last resort skillset that makes her feel like a monster for having and using, rather than an excuse to shut herself off emotionally.

Elves are neat. I'm always looking for ways to change them up, so that some common theme(s) that we associate with them are still present, but they're otherwise different enough in other ways that it might be interesting to look at.

What do you all think about the potential for Elves being a young race/species? Not "we've been the custodians of the land for thousands of years," but all of the more stereotypical things you associate with fantasy elves, but they haven't existed in the world for very long. Maybe because their origins suddenly happened due to the fey, for example. In a world where humans, dwarves, etc, have actually existed for longer, what kinds of interactions might happen?

Elves being a young species but still long-lived would almost by necessity have to be an origin story for elves. The first generation of elves that's shown up amidst the other races of the world would live for a very long time, multiple generations of even the long-lived dwarves, likely to the marvel and concern of rival states that may well threaten to stamp out elves before they can even get a foothold.
The closest thing I can think of is a book I read a while back called Inherit the Earth, which follows the story of a girl that was born with strange powers being hunted down by others for her potential as the start of a new species of humanity. For elves to spring up from a world dominated by other races, they either need to be objectively superior in nearly every aspect in order to resist any attempts to quash the new race, or be so integrated/isolationist that no one notices them becoming a powerful faction. Take just about any X-Men plot but replace any reality-shattering superpowers with some kind of spellcasting.

Half elves are a misnomer. Most unions between elves and humans result in a human child, but the elven trace remains in that bloodline for many generations. An elven child can be born at any point from this bloodline. A fully elven child. A great great great great great gre- grandparent might show up on your doorstep one day when you have an odd, pointy eared, child. You'll be expected to give it up.

Though with elves ever prone to crisis, you may be raising an elven child among humans. Finding the lost is really a factor of if someone managed to scry for them.

Party was rewarded by a farmer for their work in negotiating business terms with a whole lot of pies. For funsies, my tribal, CON-focused, Wood Elf Beast Barbarian wanted to make it a contest since her subclass gave her a magical Bite attack that due to story shenanigans allowed swallowing enemies, so she thought it would be a sure thing. One of my favorite shock moments in a game was when the party was prodding each other for their backstories. While trying to figure out the timeline for my character. it was finally dropped that she became a veteran of the setting's main happening a few decades prior in her teenaged years, 58 in the main campaign, to the slight sympathy of the early-30's half-elf that wasn't born early enough to experience it.
The other party elf, granted still only in the high-100s, was utterly appalled due to both his role in the happening, as well as such a "young" elf being yet more living proof just how awful the consequences he wants to make up for really are. That she not only had to deal with that, but she has also had to experience the entirety of the campaign's hardships as well.
Made all the more heart-breaking when she, in his eyes effectively a child soldier, was the one to tell him that "you're not a fool, fools don't learn from their mistakes." That if he was in no position to know the outcome and regardless is working to make amends in the ways that he can, she has no reason to suddenly hate her friend over something he was tricked into doing.

Got my own STR-secondary CON monster that rocks the busty breastplate + tassets + battleskirt because armor is good but armor that also makes you look nice is great. The one berserker in the game that has enough WIS to add steel to normal barbarian tankiness, unfortunately it's 5e so she doesn't get a Warhammer-esque AP + Toughness Bonus damage reduction.
