Does anyone know a good resource for very simple, cardboard terrains?

I need to prepare terrain for a 40k game with a friend, our first game, and I figured there might be some stuff available for free online, like walls/obstacles whose shape you can print on paper then cut off cardboard or something like that.

I think I'm done with the body of the troll. Mostly just have the bells and charms and the little spirits. Not quite sure what to go for? Gold or silver NMM probably?

Don't mind the gap between the ear and hair. Used sticky tac to hold the face on so it's not quite flush.

Also somebody previously asked how I did the skin, just a lot of stippling, almost feels like cheating as a technique

Way better shot anon, gj. Also helps you picked a foreground and background of a lighter tone, the first shot had three strong contrasts in the background that make it harder to see colours.

He looks solid but the eyes look a bit off, like the pupils are both looking in different places. Right eye is looking down and to his left while the left eye is looking up to the sky.
Anonymous No.96347553

There is a goldilocks zone on how close you want the phone to the miniature. You have to account for the fact that what you see on the phone and what we see on the computer are wildly different zoom levels. The easy rule is that a miniature should be taking up about a third of the total real estate of the photo taken, that allows you to contextualise the colours you see versus the background colour balance as well as zoom levels.

Northstar, Warlord Games, Perry Miniaturs, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Mantic.. they all have stuff that is cheap, if you compare it to GW prices.
My "hidden gem" would be the Deuslair Core Set by Archon Game. It consists of 99 completely random fantasy characters and monsters, giving you a vast variety to paint completely different things.

Hard to find that one from the pic, at least in Europe. But I second Victrix, reasonably priced, nicely detailed and huge in size sets of medieval or classic period minis.

>Hard to find that one from the pic, at least in Europe

How so? Archon are from Poland, and they have an online shop, and pretty much every german online store (including Amazon) stocks their stuff.
Kutami sells it for 77โ‚ฌ, others for 79โ‚ฌ.

I know i mentioned Victrix and the other historical mini-companies, and if looking at the price, they are certainly good purchases, but for a total beginner who is "getting into minis" (i assume, without having any game in mind), it might get boring rather fast to paint 60 romans or 60 vikings, thats why i think a set with variety is a better choice to start out if he really has no clue about what he wants to paint, or what game(s) he wants to eventually play with his minis.

It looks like an improvement over the Jaina figure, and I still want to know what the source on it is so I can get one.
Overall you should practice or work on pushing the volumetric highlights/shading contrast. I know that's kind of generic advice, but it applies to most of the model. It's harder to get away with these kinds of things on larger models. It probably doesn't seem like it in the moment because, like, jeeze, making the skin almost like a 50% redish brown seems WAY too dark when you also have shadows from real life, but you gotta trust the process with it.
iirc you're starting from your midtone and your highlighting up (the skin almost to white) but you're not really shading down much or at least not enough, and letting oil wash pooling do it, and in some places couldn't reach it to shade down. My preferred style of painting is to pretty much paint in your darkest color all over and layer up in smaller places until you hit your highlights - if you couldn't reach it to brush, then chances are the light couldn't either so your messy brush-ruining dark base coat is fine in those spots. You don't HAVE to paint like that by any means, but I think you're still just too close to the midtone on all 3 main surfaces (well, the skin I think the highlights are about the right value, but needs some darker shading).
Just some things to keep in mind on future models, not saying you need to go in and make chances to this one necessarily unless you feel like it. Could always come back to it later too since it's in like a good checkpoint state.

>what's the motivation here? making truescale marines from pre-primaris models? matching primaris size?
Converting cool dudes is my favorite part of this hobby. But I wont deny that I do care a lot about keeping scale on track as I want my models to fit together, but my space marines are mostly about making my own bespoke cool dudes. Albeit certainly with a lot of older more classically marine parts cause thats what I grew up looking at. In this case it was about trying to make something cool out of things I already had but hadn't come up with a use yet (30k justaerin parts), but primaris bodies do make the foundation for a lot of the others. I don't really build from kits, I normally start by clipping out all the parts into organized bits boxes that I pull from, one with bodies, armour marks identifiers, weapons, etc.

If there is a progress, that's good news. I do feel that I did skin better this time but there still much to be done. You mentioned that it look midtone all over and that's one of dilemma I face - either to try and make contrasting skin or quite opposite, given that female skin in general is less contrasting and more smooth (especially anime themed stuff and kitsune, as proper Japanese lady, would rather try to get her skin as white as possible). I will try to get some model with more skin visible next time for better training.

I posted source in previous thread, sorry if I missed you - I got 3D prints from emp3d.eu, Polish online shop but with option to send outside. This particular was https://emp3d.eu/pl/p/Amaterasu-rozne-skale/5491 (apparently have "nsfw" version too but it simply have visible nipples as the only difference).

Braced. Both resting on your table with a little weight on them to keep them secure.
>Non-dominant hand?
Make your hand into a little duck mouth. Now, put the model between the meat of the thumb, and pointer+middle fingers. NOT the actual fingers and thumb, you need those for later. Right in the meaty parts of the hand.
>Dominant hand?
Hold your brush with your thumb, pointer and middle fingers. Now, SMASH it down into the exposed palm of your non-dominant hand (don't smash your model, and this should be the palm pad kind of opposite your thumb on that hand). Now brace your paintbrush hand with your fingertips and thumb from the non-dominant hand.
You will have MAXIMUM control even if you have some degree of mild tremors.

Do you remember science glass in high school, looking at plant cells or whatever under the microscope? Maybe you don't remember, but you can actually move those slides around on the order of the size of those cells, 10's of microns. If you can properly stabilize you have more fine control than you can perceive without magnification.

Despite my progress, I suffered a setback last night when I dropped the Callidus and her braid broke off! Man, you'd think Citadel could've come up with a better way to join those pieces. I pinned it with steel this time. Will probably let the epoxy dry for another 24 hours before I come back to touch up the paint on the top of her head.

In the meantime, I have Centos over there on the left and a Blood-Angelized Blood Claw (not pictured) I could work on.

Not great but does the job, get it if you think you could use it if you can find it cheap secondhand but personally I wouldn't pay retail for this stuff again. I was under the impression I was buying hard plastic because they just market it as plastic. No primer or assembly necessary. The only prep involves bending pieces back into proper shape with a hairdryer or hot water which is pretty standard for PVC or resin kits. I find mould line removal just beats the shit out of my blades too fast and it doesn't look good. Maybe a file or something would work better. I just leave the mould lines on because I'm a careless sinner like that when it comes to PVC.

a filter with no forced airflow does nothing
for acrylics a face mask should be enough to protect you, the other things are more to prevent dust on the room

you would have to place it at the back where your filter would be, water traps particles, it kind of works like a filter, some fancy spraybooths have a waterfall at the back instead of a filter

Anonymous No.96366722

Depends on how I'm basing them. If I can get away with it, I just slop the texture paste into the puddle. If the basing is more involved than that I clip it off and just glue/pin the feet to the base as usual.

I guess I *could* clip them, but I was just planning to base over mine. The added surface area of the puddle base gives me more room to slather glue on.

I have some extra Blood Angel Terminators from Third Edition Space Hulk that I was going to form into squads for my army, and they come on weird oblong puddle bases meant for the Space Hulk board. There isn't any detail on these. It's purely to keep them from falling over during the game. What would have been neat is if they had sculpted some grating under them, as if the Terminators are cautiously moving through the corridors of a ... y'know, Space Hulk.

I did that for my Vindicare Assassin and a Devastator Squad I was working on so they could match the top of the Imperial Bastion I have on my display board.

Yes they are droppers but the "hole" at the tip is a bit wider than is other droppers I think? When you shake them a bit of paint always gets stuck under the cap which is not as much of an issue with, say, AK. It's not the end of the world, just a minor design fault. Still a bit annoying though.

Just threw a coat of varnish down over the texture paste to prepare for the scatter mix and the fixing tack/alcohol based scatter fix to go on. Probably going to go in on those crates and maybe barrels again with a little darker shading on the wood grain. The light tone wash I used didn't draw enough contrast imo. I had good results with Averland Sunset and Yriel Yellow from Citadel.
Their Iyanden Yellow contrast paint is good too.

The possibilities are endless. Just get on there and freestyle it. No tutorials needed. Sometimes you could switch roles and it could fuck you.

I've never used plastic cement after greenstuff/milliput. I don't think it does, but you can just test it off model.

Necron color tester here.

Tried the reverse colors on some minis where I messed up the primer, but I don't really like either.

6 and 7 are my favorites I think, but still having trouble choosing between them.

What's wrong with fucking the ship? at a certain point of development the difference between a "natural" and "artificial" mind will be meaningless, so as long as she has a suitable orifice then I don't see the moral problem.
Well, you know, presuming consent is involved.

The spray primer turned out to be a "texture" paint of some kind. Literally my first 40k mini, and a valuable lesson.

Pic is from trolltrader, not mine. It's my inspiration for the gold/blue ones
