Dawn embodies the eccentric fantasy world that Belladonna wishes she could live in, where she can be the charismatic hero who saves people and never stammers or fumbles basic greetings and interactions. The Knight-Errant born from her online persona being attributed as a sort of Robin-Hood type Hacker who reveals politicians who have CP on thier hard-drive and revealing tax scam churches and stuff. In truth she's not that moral and tends to take whatever jobs interest her. Its just that the only jobs she feels comfortable attributing to her handle are ones that make her look good. Corporate Espionage pays the bills but nobody gives a shit about that kind of hack.

The perfection is only skin deep and as the keyefabe fails more of her normal personality reveals itself.

When she loses the knightly delusion she tends to become more practical and a much more accurate depiction of Dawn. A professional who can eliminate targets with a carefully timed shot while disrupting the enemy in the process. She doesn't panic once she locks in, but its arguable if there's much Belladonna in there once the gun comes out. The balance is thrown off.

Eventually they may reach a state of balance and get the best of both worlds. They just need a good opponent to bring it out.

Once upon a time, his Idolon would be a shining hero, with the personality of those 80s/90s anime/cartoon heroes, preaching about teamwork and the power of friendship.
Then shit happened.

Currently, Itsuki just overpowered his Idolons' sense of self due to his despair and guilt, basically reshaping the entire thing to be just an extension of himself because of his "failure".

When in combat, Madoka is more Madoka than Kukurihime, although it's more a result of the Idolon intentionally taking a back seat. Some of Kuki-chan's habits shine through however, like some minor speech habits, posture, etc.

Because it's intentional, it also means that if she wants to or needs to, Kuki-chan can shift to a more active role in the incarnation. If that happens, it results in a very noticeable increase in skill, going from more brute-force usage of powers to intricate layered schemes and extremely precise or more advanced applications of their abilities. Needless to say she's a lot more level-headed and confident as a combatant too.

Some things wouldn't really change however. They're both kind-hearted and like standing out. They're both generally going to prioritize the safety of allies over all else. Very similar mindsets. Kuki-chan is just a lot more wise and capable.

It makes Momo more high-strung/impatient inside bleeding/flooding zones and the Idea World, because she has to keep constant control of an hyperactive oni girl. Most of the time [Simply Red] and her are on the same wavelength, but the Idolon is a lot more carefree and cluelessly heavyhanded with her violence. Against monsters it's not such a problem, against possessed humans/nightmares Momo has to make sure she's not going for the kill.

Yes, she does have the Under An Evil Star drawback, becoming more bloodthirsty if her oni blood acts up, and that bleeds over to her Idolon as well. They start torturing opponents to make sure they can get their fun before breaking their toy, not that they wouldn't desecrate the fading remains even after death. Her usual pushy sukeban ways become downright tyrannical, turning even on her allies if they don't fall in line and obey her every order.

As an aside, since the oni whispering temptation in her head is very old, Oni Momo will start adopting a more ancient manner of speech if possessed by madness. Like a demonic sect chud ripped out xianxia slop.

Tomaki is slowly being warped by Kakito's Tooth, he'll soon get taller, buffer, both by nutrition and his body requiring to get bigger to withstand his power. While he becomes 'Shalt-Zoi' in the Idea World, slowly this line will blur because of Realm of Possibility, Iconoclast Rule, ect. Eventually there'll be no difference between the two forms but I imagine that'll take a long time beyond the MP.

Changes that are happening now are that he's starting to grow in the tusks he has in that form.

The Grand Ogre is basically Archie with everything turned up to supernatural degrees.

Mainly he physically embodies Archie's "hunger" for a fight, becoming an absolute glutton both for a brawl and literally eating the corpses of any slain Idea World entity (thanks Heavy Eater).

The Grand Ogre also goes from a casual care about his friends to outright overprotectiveness, to the point of getting incredibly angry about any slight or harm upon his comrades.

Archie does realize it's happening, but its essentially just him without any restraints. Archie will only start to reign in his Idolon if The Grand Ogre's obssessive gluttony or protection results in tactical idiocy or embarassment.

Renka fundamentally does not recognize a difference between her Idolon and herself. If questioned, she would not hesitate to assert that Yumemiru is her true self, and that her human aspect is simply to a vessel to bear her spirit in the waking world. She does go through a shift when incarnating, however. It's relatively minor, but she becomes prouder and more confident. She is also notably reluctant to revert to her human form. Maybe it was just any random excuse, like he wanted Itsuki to fail so he can raise the stakes with his next request. Haven't found a good faceclaim for the idolon yet, but Mei's always true to herself, making there be very little difference between her normally and when she is in Idolon form. However she does become far more focused on the fight in front of her rather than what is behind her, as her idolon's abilities aren't suited for having allies close by.

Kenji is completely obsessed with Tokiwa-chan - this is not some supernatural influence on her part or something, it is just a consequence of the time and conditions Kenji awakened to her. Similarly, she has no direct effect on him when manifesting in the idea world - partially because she's an avatar/other person and there is just inherently less overlap than an Incarnation, but mostly because she doesn't want to influence him that way.

She's indirectly responsible for most of his noticeable character traits, including his director persona/movie fixation. So long as he has her with him, Kenji can push through unbelievable trauma and injury, but the second she's gone (such as with strong Negacion or someone taking his camera in the real world) he'll fold like a deck of cards and do anything to get her back.

Other than that, they're pretty codependent - if either of them is injured in combat, the other will lash out at the attacker and target them pretty much exclusively. If you know what you're doing, baiting them is pretty easy (especially for the more manipulative builds like Reiji and Itsuro).

Reiji isn't yet aware he even has an Idolon; he just believes he's among the rare few who now get strange abilities in places where the supernatural has begun to creep into the regular world. No entity appears when this happens and nothing about his appearance really changes.

The fact that he has these abilities is also something he's keeping secret from the other students for now by covering himself in Vow of Aegis armor that protects his identity. My plan for him at the beginning of the MP is to just show up a bunch in Bleeding Zones and Flooded Zones to observe and/or help the main cast and then leaving without saying a word after learning what he can.

Anything beyond that is something I'm planning to go into at a later date.

Outside of combat, not much changes for Kanae besides her mannerisms becoming more masculine and dignified as befitting of a kami. Her personality doesn't change due to the possession, but just like when she's doing her duties as yamabushi she treats idea world business with the appropriate solemnity. In the real world nothing changes as well.

In battle the situation reverses however, the killing intent of her idolon takes center stage and she's ultimately there as spectator. She can roughly guide its movements but everything is ultimately done by pure instinct, a convenient auto-pilotable idolon.

The presence of her mind in the idolon is a flaw if anything. It is far more experienced than she is and as such can choose the appropriate response without conscious thought , while this wouldn't be much of an issue in regular exploration, when shit hits the fan it's possible that her desperation slows or freezes its reactions for a moment. Once the damage is done, the resulting guilt/self-hatred would make Kanae closer to Musan however.

From her perspective, their relationship isn't a surprise. She's used to receiving his advice as well as lending her body for divination/exorcism, so becoming an incarnation of her kami is not that unusual, even if this incarnation isn't the same as the one she's receiving advice from, she can trust it without issue, so they're quite in sync.

In Ai’s case, the distinction is all but null. Her Idolon is her, stripped of restraint. It doesn’t really alter her behavior so much as make it explode outwards.
Ai doesn’t experience the Idolon as an external influence, she doesn’t “notice” changes because it feels like she has always been that way.
She’s already obsessive, grotesque, violent when pressed, and incapable of stepping outside her fixation on Shu. The Idolon isn’t something she resists, more like the opposite, it’s something that validates what’s already there.

Her whole system of values is warped. The only true crisis is if something threatens Shu.
All her capabilities, strength, resistance, and capacity for grotesque violence turn outward, because for Ai there is no such thing as self-preservation. There is only Shu-preservation.

Empiric can be seen as an alternate path. If someone was more supernaturally inclined, you could even say that Empiric was a past life he'd lived through. More experienced, altruistic, these are things he can grow into more as he shares consciousness with him with every trip to the Idea World. It's not that this sense of helping others was not there, more that he's suppressing them to focus more on his goals. In most scenarios, Kazu and Empiric go hand in hand, mostly so that he doesn't have to think too hard about what to do and so they can take care of the situation ASAP.

It's not like people are going to notice him much due to still being a weirdo, but it does make him more open to others. Taking into consideration other people's feelings and trying his best to empathize or take interest in others other than his original friend group.

Yoshimitsu is in fact very active in Matsunaga's life. Though most of the communication happens during dreams, sometimes Matsunaga will also hear a whisper carried by the wind.

As for when things go south, it's the times where Takemikazuchi becomes the most active, if you are observant enough you can feel the smell of ozone in the air around Matsunaga and a staticky feeling around him.

When he gets to come out and play it's a completely different matter, it's like two people joined at the hip who practiced fighting together a million times before. If Matsunaga goes into the offensive Takemikazuchi will lead a path open to him, if Matsunaga defends, he will use some tricks to attack at a distance. But at their core they are so compatible they work in tandem perfectly. In a weird sense Takemikazuchi is really happy that a kindred soul like Matsunaga exists in the modern era but also dissapointed that this youth has not manifested his true self yet.

Having arms again is probably the best thing that Tomaki could want, and well, made happen anyway.

His particular martial art, which is called [Fel-Hunter], is particularly inspired by animals who charge and don't stop moving. To point, he has a habit of running on all fours.

It makes more use of his feet than it does his arms, using his hands for grapples and movement while supporting his hind legs for axe kicks, spins, and devastating shows of mastery and technique.

When it does come to his arms, he can 'disengage' them to paint symbols which is how he makes use of his idolon's real abilities.

Amelia embodies wisdom and restraint with a nurturing but fiercely protective personality. Calm on the surface but terrifying when provoked.

Meliaya has hasn’t been in any fight before so she would rely on her idolon and her friends more. She wouldn’t be useless though since she will use her superior intellect to come up with a plan! She uses her superior scouting powers so that no enemy could ever sneak up on her team and ensure that her team isn't walking into an ambush.

Cato becomes more micromanaging and ruthless, and Space Alien gets notably more childish, "playing around" more in tasks. Space Alien spams minions and Space Energy attacks, aiming to overwhelm. Its minions are weaker versions of itself, so they don't have much physical strength, but they quickly turn a battlefield into a bullet hell. Nightmares are prioritized to not kill, so they can be captured and used to help protect Cato, who generally stays back and shouts orders or throws various objects at whoever they're fighting.

Alyona's Idolon is a more honest version of herself: a communist magical girl who defeats whatever she sees as evil with extreme prejudice with overwhelming firepower.

She is a very spontaneous fighter, relying on Renka to shape the battlefield in her and Archie's favor so their small numbers can mean as much as possible. The idea world isn't the kind of place that makes spatial sense anyway, even if she were a gifted terrain analyst, is wouldn't mean anything.

When Alyona is close to running out of strength, she tries to use a final burst of violence to at least injure the enemy enough that she can't be pursued. Ultimately, what drives her deep down is fear someone is going to take her down: corner her and she'll fight with the ferocity of a cornered animal until she can run.

Most overtly, Twinned Wrath "speaks" to Ran with the voice of his brother. It's usually hints and trying to push him to do better ethically, like the trope with an angel on someone's shoulder. Sometimes it's not really speaking to him, but more of just shaping Ran's thoughts to "sound" like that of his brother, and Ran can't tell a difference, so he assumes it's his idolon speaking to him still. Something else he doesn't realise is that it also directly affects his personality without the verbal factor. His willingness to change his path and grow better is a direct result of that (mechanically a side-effect of Raging River + Cogito, Ergo Sum).
It can also pull in the opposite direction too, enhancing his own more violent and impulsive nature, especially in the Idea World and when his allies get hurt. Then, he grows even more impetuous, abandoning self-preservation, and willing to go further in the terms of hunting down the enemies.
The intensity of both effects fluctuates, somewhat, independently. When both grow high, it can negatively affect his coordination, with the left (white and blue, more affected by his brother) and right (gray and red, more affected by his own nature) sides pulling in different direction, but to reach that level, the situation would need to be really extreme. Usually, both "pilots" work well together.

It's a very physical and violent style. He tends to leap into the midst of the action and try to keep the enemies' focus on himself, be it by just getting in their path to stop them from getting to his allies, or by draining enough stamina and dealing enough damage so that they can't ignore him. The idolon doesn't have any really esoteric attacks, and it doesn't carry a weapon (although it might improvise with something it picks up or by using the environment), so the approach just looks like a superpowered brawl, with typical strikes and grappling. It rarely dodges, it prefers parrying the attacks or just tanking them.
His left and right side tend to act differently, with the left side being more defensive and tactical, and the right being more offensive and straightforward.
So the left side is the one that takes the lead at parrying, feinting and building openings. It's the one that applies the Marks, which look like claw marks pulsing with faint blue, which is a visual effect shared with the rest of the abilities used by this side.
The right side blocks and tries to overwhelm the enemy with bigger hits, and outside of some counterstrikes, it's the only one that uses life expenditure, which it does on almost every strike. It's also the one that powers up the Retaliation, where a red aura flows from hurt allies towards the idolon, and that aura is the visual effect for this side.
Some abilities, where a power-up may be gained, start channelled on one side, but then also flow to the other side. When the auras combine, they have a sort of purplish hue.

How do you guys interpret Idea Slayer? I interpret it as some sort of duraneg and maybe regen neg. As silly as this sounds, in Pokemon Unite (the only moba I've played) Tyranitar has two abilities that were pretty unique when he came out; he did damage directly to HP ignoring shields and could instantly kill you if you were at a low enough percentage of HP. So that's how I interpret it.

To me it just reads like normally idea monsters are immortal and only get banished if you try to kill them, but with that skill you can kill them for real. So normally you'd stab them with your sword or whatever, and they'd bleed out and die, only to appear again a week later if they feel so inclined. Now they don't come back, because they're dead. It doesn't make it easier to stab them or make them unable to heal their wounds if your stab isn't fatal. Just means that if you kill them, you actually killed them.

That's all it really says, but if you wanted to treat it like some sort of damage boost against those kinds of beings, I doubt anyone would fight against you as long as you don't wank it beyond the level of any other skill of a similar level.

Weak. Like a little bitch, since Itsuki only has a sword to his name and nothing else.
If he believes he can fight with impunity and that no one will see it, then things change. He will keep focus on his enemies and keep the pressure. He is a good generalist with survival skills and combat capabilities, coupled with a Weapon, he can keep a good pressure and attack despite not being an Assault Idolon himself.
He also has Breakcore and Wuxing, allowing him to snipe out enemies using his flames, and keep pressure from anywhere in the battlefield, breathing down your neck and fighting with his sword and flames, or from long range with bursts of fire aimed at your weak spots, so he can break it and then swoop in. No matter the position in the battlefield, he is able to fight perfectly at it, and is good enough of a generalist and survivalist to counterbalance his Freakish III recoil damage using Lifesteal and Wuxing III, coupled with some criticals with Breakcore.
Of course, he will only show competence and this level of power when there is no one staring and he is confident he WILL kill his target.

Yeah kinda. It's different ways of achieving the same mechanical function of extra damage, but they go about it differently. Blue stare also shows the weak points to allies and probably the closest death perception, red glare also extends attacks, and idea slayer also strikes the soul and maybe lose a trait. The latter part about seeing ideas as a weak point was more to suggest that you still have to be precise with your attacks to remove a concept from something. We could also interpret it as an enchantment on the attack rather than actually seeing ideas that could be destroyed.

Ideas in the setting are not the same thing as concepts in the real world. Ideas (In this case, Small Ideas, Bigger Ideas, Mature Ideas, and everything in between) are things conjured up in the Idea World, information that clogs it.
If it goes without culling (Nightmare Eater's job), it corrupts and turns into something nasty (Another type of Nightmare, not the 4 Star Enemy), so Nightmare Eaters cull the Idea population and keep things in harmony in the Idea World by acting as trash cleaners and dealing with overflowing or otherwise corrupted information.
The reason Kageoka does not have that type of Nightmare is that it is overflowing with Nightmare Eaters attracted to it like a beacon.

Nightmare Eaters by themselves have no idea what a human is, and why eating their dream is bad; they are just doing their job. This is why most, after being knocked around, can be quite reasonable since they will see the error of their ways and that humans are not ideas.

Killing Ideas is akin to permanently erasing information from a hard drive, allowing a new version of that information, or new information altogether, to take its place without corrupting other data or occupying excessive space.

Tokiwa-chan (and by extension, Kenji) is a hard zoner that relies on keeping distance with an opponent and either chipping them slowly or assisting more powerful allies with Haste effects and debuffs. The Storm and Scout 3 means she can travel nearly anywhere in a Bleeding Zone quickly, and she can use the portals she makes to move allies/enemies, to evade attacks or strike from odd angles, etc.

Her attacks take the form of a film reel that she constantly produces, capturing everything each of her cameras see. She can then tear or burn the film to deal damage to whoever is on it - Kenji typically does this part to free her up for other actions in combat. With Scout 3 and her movement abilities, most fights typically end up more like a time trial or sniper hunt - finding where she and Kenji are and then preventing them from escaping before they chip you down. If you can get close enough to land a Negacion or a Realm to prevent escape then they're only annoying if they have allies they can buff with Fact Check.

They do best against simple and direct opponents and do worst against stealthy, ranged types.

You have an animal-like entity that can somewhat talk that create destructive entities so you are probably always dealing with Nightmares first while Nightmare Eaters stalk around and maybe evolve into Nightmare Overlords. My interpretation is the idea that Eaters are more 'pure'. They're animals. They exist to eat dreams.

Ai's Idolon is quite the beast in combat. Though she tends to rampage and act on instinct she doesn't have the Beast ability, so it's all her homegrown schizo frenzy.
She abuses Freakish III with Bulletproof II, getting some extra oomph through Character I. And it all cycles back as she deals absurd damage with Idea Slayer, Breakcore III, Life Expenditure III and all of her brute strength to recover with Lifesteal. Absolute Resonance is the cherry on top.
