Having rules that rely on points that come at the cost of being on objectives sucks. No, having a character that can give you one extra in a turn doesn't change that.

It means that you're entirely dependent on what your opponent does to have an army rule. If they don't stand on objectives, then for the first 1-2 turns, you're hitting on fucking 4+. The army is now more hordy than ever, and nothing feels strong.

AdMech has better army rules than Votann now, and they were the laughing stock of the edition. They at least have full control over their own army rule!

I've always believed that a base Ripper can grow into literally any tyranid morph, based on the environment, food sources, and the needs of the hivemind.
They're like Squigs, they just keep growing as long as they keep eating.

I've heard and read and been told that the Hive ships just spit nids out fully grown in pods and shoot them in sporocysts, but I believe both of these things can be true at once.
Especially when the visual language of the Tyranids has such an evolutionary throughline.

Always assume that 99.99% of any morph is dying in battle and being reassimilated, while the hive ships in orbit are growing and deploying flash-grown template morphs but in my head-canon:
>Rippers grow into Gaunts, or into Guns, or into Glands
>Gaunts have branches of evolution that lead to all other morphs
>Hormagants can grow into VR's Leapers, which grow into Lictors (first wave of nids might be "printed" lictors like Deathleaper, or seeded rippers that eat enough local fauna to become Lictors)
>can grow out their tails/hooves and become Raveners (new models have more gaunt-like heads), which grow into Mawlocs/Trygons

Oh and obviously a Gargoyle is just a Termigant with wings.
The Neurocytes are new to this balance, though they could be cousin to the Adrenal gland morph, which is a similar brain-bug looking organism.
Anyways that's my big dumb headcanon, I'm sure GW would have a fit.

It might more simply be convergence evolution.
We have never seen gaunts develop into other biomorphs, while we have seen a multitude of biomorphs being developed with parallel adaptations.
It's unlikely for all winged nids to come from the same branch, for example.

theorycrafting: the reason Genestealer cultists get cut off right as they dive into the digestion pit isn't because the Hive Mind is just a dick, it doesn't want to contaminate itself by absorbing too many human minds.

The cultist's genetic link to the Hive can run two ways, and if the hive keeps its connection to the cultists as they die, it might absorb them completely into itself, the way the consciousness of every named Nid, and possibly every single individual Nid period, is stored within the Hive's repository of genetic memory.
The Hive doesn't want to waste bandwidth and storage space on tyranid genetics contaminated with human thoughts, so it just tosses them and keeps the Purestrains, which is what it really wants out of the cults, as they're a more condensed, collected genetic record of the humans living on the planet than just eating every single one of them.

My personal theory is that the Nids want more than just the biomass, they want the genetic information and all the history of adaption hidden within. It's why they've become more adapted and predatory since they got here, their design has been refined by human, orkish, and aeldari DNA.

Well, we know primes and hive tyrants can grow wings, so all morphs are highly elastic and modular. I'm just proposing that they're SO elastic, one could bridge the gap to become another, given time and opportunity. The thing is, the hive prints Old One Eye like he's his own Carnifex morph, but there had to be an original OOE, the one that embified the morph.

I think all individual tyranids are either printed from a list of templates, or "natural" nids that grow and potentially become new templates. Like maybe the Hivemind only keeps the minds, memories and templates of about a dozen hormagants in the banks of the entire fleet, since they had the highest kill/death ratio, and just printed them out en masse, but those gaunts had to get those scores naturally.

Adding to this, our detachments don't make sense either as they focused on the Brokhyr, Hernkyn, and Cthonian elements of the army but ignored the Hearthkyn and Hearthguard. They should've set up the detachments to resemble the 9th edition Leagues instead of the models in a VERY limited range.
Having said that, I'm going to keep playing them because I dwarves, space or fantasy, are my favorite faction. Just need James to figure out how to build their rules.

Being more serious, the Hive Mind likely fully understands Human minds. It was capable of blasting an Eldar's brain with visions of her getting tortured and brutally killed by Nids just by casually glancing her way, and Eldar minds are supposed to be far more complex than Human ones. 'Stored' human minds would essentially be an afterthought, maybe literally, and wouldn't even be within the Hive Mind's consideration. It likely just 'turns off' the synaptic link as a reflex, and given that it makes no difference if it happens fast enough to disconnect or not the result in inconsequential to the Hive Mind.

Hm, guess I've never thought of the rule like that in any real capacity. I hated JT with a passion since our index (and hated the auto-wounding in 9th, but I was hopeful they could do better things with JT back then) so this is a major step in the right direction to me, even from a pure flavor standpoint.
I will say that I do like the fact that it makes our opponents think between us shooting them more effectively or letting us score primaries easier, but this is speaking without having played the rules. In a competitive sense, I 100% agree that it sucks to give your opponent that much agency. But I play way more casually and can't think of a single opponent in my LGS that'd stay off of objectives that long.
I do agree wholeheartedly on the detachments. I was really looking forward to a hearthguard detachment and beyond the index a Hearthkyn detachment seems absent. I was also majorly disappointed by the beserk detachment, not only because beserks aren't my favorite unit but because I was hoping for a more general melee detachment, and they decided to hard-focus a single unit instead.
I'll be playing my first game with needguard on Thursday so I'll get my first chance to actually try out the new rules then, but while I was really excited when the rules were revealed I guess I'm a bit more cautious now.
One thing I think still stands is that I think this will be way better for us in the future, considering all GW has to do to balance this is tweak a single resource instead of just letting us effectively not have an army rule (by making tons of units start with JT instead of accruing them, which was my most hated part of the rule)

That's true, I'm more retelling the general consensus (as much as one can exist on /tg/) with my own personal experience added in. I've had fun with late 7e / 8e, 9e and 10e as well, but I've noticed it usually fizzles out faster. Plus I live near the largest Brick and Mortar GW in the US and during 5e, 6e, early 7e and early 8e is was very active. But now it's pretty dead, only places I see 40k games now are in an LGS where people practice for tournaments.

I like varied terrain. Even with ruined cities, I like to mix it up. I will sometimes stack books under building to put them on elevation. I've got a collection of books that are the right thickness to line up with the terrain.

The hive mind and tyranids could do a lot of things in a lot of ways, theoretically, but practically we don't see them working that way or with anything pointing to more complex things than what we're shown.

For example, it's sick as hell to imagine a group of gaunts being given the order to nest, cocoon and emerge as gargoyles after a metamorphosis a few days later, but we don't see them doing anything along these lines.

It's entirely possible that the classification between genus that the imperials have done so far are fundamentally all wrong, but we've got to consider there's a basis of truth and that these genus have some real genetic differences that mark them as distinct.

We also are given very little to think that the hive mind absorb its creatures minds only with the digestion pools, we know from the rpg that the swarmlord has a sort of droneship managing its continued experience regardless of whether the body gets absorbed, similarly old one eye has been replicated even if the original one never went to a digestion pool, the original is frozen somewhere under the ministrations of a hybrids cult after they recovered it in ultramar.

The growth from ripper to other biomorphs is also quite dubious, for starters it's a hypothesis, secondly, we don't know whether rippers are pluripotent or whether the larval stages of various things just happen to be very similar, not to mention the doubt whether it's the rippers themselves that develop into the organism, or rippers are merely the mean by which the chamber to spawn a new organism is built.

The flavor is much better, but the mechanical implementation sucks nuts. Army rule aside, having so many of the strategems for every detatchment basically require YP to be good when other armies just get similar strategems without the hoops... well, it fucking sucks.

Even in a casual setting, having so little control over your own army rule feels awful, especially when the majority of other armies have full control over theirs. Even similar ones given to other "should be 3+ BS/WS but we have to make space marines feel special" such as Tau and AdMech leave the control entirely in the player's hands.

In what world does the extremely bulky armor on the left have the same armor save as the much lighter and much more exposing armor on the right? Heck, his shoulders are exposed in the game known for heavy armor being defined by bigger shoulder pads.

I envision them as being sort of shitty, but only in the way actual human history tended to be. Some worlds have very little tech and are basically like feudalism, some are just kind of poor. Pretty much. The really bad part about the Civilized Worlds isn't that they're particularly dystopian, but rather...they're basically contributing fuck-all to the Imperium. Forge Worlds have factories to pump out 'simple' weapons like Lasguns and Leman Russ tanks, they are the heart of the Imperial Guard and there's about 32,000 of them which is why the Guard is so fucking big.

Forge Worlds are far fewer, listed as being merely 'hundreds' though no specific number is given. But they produce the rare shit like Titans and spaceships that the Imperium needs.

Feral worlds and death worlds aren't particularly useful resource wise, but they can be good for producing specialist regiments or getting recruits for a Space Marine chapter.

But Civilized Worlds are kinda in the middle of being mostly useless.

Hive World, Forge World, Agri World, Civilized World, Feudal World and Feral World, and a few other far rarer categories.
You already know about the first two so...
Agri Worlds are memed by the fan base to be idealic farm worlds where you live like modern farmers do, an idealic portrayal of the simple life, life Stardew Valley. This is almost always false, Agriworlds are roamed by servitors and slaves and are almost always just as bad as Forge Worlds just with a skyline of nature instead of metropolitan sprawl. You will live in a small hab block exactly like your average Forgeworld.
Civilized worlds are any planet that has central government and is industrialized but not specialized enough to be a Forge or Agriworld and not over populated enough to collapse into a Hive World. The common conception of these in the fan base is it's just like modern Earth, but this again is too kind. The aggregate experience is planet sized USSRs of verying technology levels, if they deviate they are far more likely to be planet sized North Koreas than Russias. A very slim minority have relatively liberal central governments and do compared to modern Western countries. Civilized Worlds are by far the most common type of planet in the Imperium.
Feudal worlds, are planets that are incapable of creatung a centralized government do to their lack of technology, but they are stable enough for the Inperium to deal with local nobles and make them pay the tithe
Feral worlds are Imperial in name only, or only have a facility or two on them. The people of the world are not advanced enough to form a stable wnough government for the Imperium to consistently extract value from.
Of all the types of world in the Imperium a civilized worlds are the most common, but most of the population of the Imperium lives in Hive Worlds.
