Should I go the extra step and add the white speculars (right image, made a mockup in photoshop) or keep it as is (left)
I made the mockup white a bit small, imagine it a bit bigger in reality most likely.

This older guy at my lgs keeps bringing in these smaller space marines and it's annoying cause I think he's modelling for advantage with them cause they fit behind cover easier than normal marines do. I kind of went overboard on weathering it.
This was bright mephiston red with mechanicus decals on the doors before I made it look like it really did dig through rock It was a cheapish recast.
It has only seen a handful of games, in most it doesn't do much other than deliver troops and in one it used the drill to take more wounds than I expected off of a wraith knight (back in 8th when the drill was silly)
It was mostly for my mechanicus honestly, back when fires of cyraxus was a real possibility. I also have never seen anyone else with one, real or not.

It was also part of the design inspiration for Vashtorr according to their little warcom article about the mini. They didn't want him to be "just" a blacksmith because he's also a crafty and merciless wheeler and dealer making one-sides contracts with demons and mortals alike. But his model reflects none of that and as a result he just looks like a shitty blacksmith.

I think the biggest problem is the fact that his model's face can't convey ANY sort of character due to his blank eyes and mouth.

Flyers will be banished to Legends in 11th edition.

You can surely extract all sorts of chemicals from a body and Eldar (especially Dark Eldar who do all sorts of modifications and drugs) might have all manner of chemicals in their systems that can be distilled and refined into human use. One of the vials contains stuff from a Tyranid. How is that not equally weird? It's also possible getting your hands on pure samples of DE drugs is harder or they might not work as intended. Maybe the marine implants might attack undiluted samples of the drugs and nullify them, while a version taken from a body and refined could get past the implants?

Guilliman was the perfect primarch to return. It made logical sense, as he was never fully dead, just locked in stasis moments before death (and allegedly slowly healing). It worked thematically, as he was a perfect opposite of the current imperium - efficient, intelligent and well-adjusted. Narratively it made for a great contrast, even a demigod of legend, the best one at unfucking things, couldn't unfuck the Imperium and it broke him instead.
But then he sold too well and now all the fucking primarchs are returning.

Well, roughly 10% of hunter cadres are battlesuits, which checks out with how their promotion system works. This can vary, but this was the example given to us so it's likely the 'average' cadre.

We know that there are singular Tau planets with trillions of people, Sa'cea being the premier example, and it's not even particularly habitable by Tau standards (it's actually something of a death world that breeds tough soldiers, the Tau just live in giant arcology domes to supply the needs of their population). We also know that they have enormous continent sized space habitats for their air caste to live in, so the population of any given planet probably won't need to account for that caste.

All this to say, with 240 or more planets (I would assume closer to 300 by now but we don't have specific numbers to work with other than it's at least 240 or so) we can probably assume there's at least tens of trillions of people in the Tau Empire, more likely hundreds of trillions but let's play things conservatively. If we assume a population of 10 trillion, then if only 10% of that population was Firewarriors, that would be 1 trillion Firewarriors. And if we assume 10% of those Firewarriors will be piloting battlesuits, that would be 100 billion battlesuits.

Now, this might be too high. For starters, the need for 4 years of active service in combat would likely lower that number. And, likewise, it's possible that there are a higher proportion of battlesuit-light cadres to battlesuit-heavy cadres. But regardless, we can at least assume that the numbers of battlesuits are likely in the billions at minimum, with tens of billions being my safest assumption.

Sure, they might have some Breacher squads and possibly Void Battlesuits depending on whether you take Battlefleet Gothic to be canon, but they're still not gonna be as good as Space Marines in a CQC brawl.

The other problem is that the Imperium has had 10,000 years of relative peace to build up a massive space navy, so even if the Tau's manufacturing capabilities are superior on a per-planet level, it can't really compare to what the Imperium has stored up over the millenia (before someone comes at me I said 'relative' peace, the Imperium never had to face the challenges during the Great Crusade that the Tau are facing during their expansion).

For most of the 10,000 years in between the Horus Heresy and now, the Necrons were mostly asleep, the Tyranids had not arrived, and Chaos was mostly contained to the Eye of Terror. There are entire Millenia during this period where basically nothing of note happens other than the founding of more space marine chapters. Were there a few major events, sure. But there were millenia between these events.

The Imperium is playing on easy mode. The Tau have to fight for every inch of territory against a massive hostile empire, while the Imperium was able to conquer a million planets that almost universally had no FTL and no forces beyond whatever was local to their planet, and then afterwards had thousands and thousands of years to build up and reinforce their rule with relatively few interruptions.

Are we honestly going to say that THAT was a major war that required significant investment and resources, but the wars against the Tau where several dozen planets get burnt to ashes just to slow their expansion down aren't? Those millions of planets all need to be defended, meaning that they all have to have garrison and troops on them protecting them, meaning you need massive numbers of soldiers protecting them. If it were me trying to do it I'd start with random "patches" scattered around almost like a camo pattern with plenty of thinning, and then build up layers with lighter tones blending each one in. To get the right effect the patches should not follow the exact same outline each time, and be stippled slightly. Then follow with a thin sharp line to mimic marble veins.

So those bases are done differently than my example. But they're dead easy to do if you have an airbrush. Supposedly you can use spray cans but I'd imagine you'd have to be very light on the trigger. Basically you spray your vein colour first, then stretch a dryer sheet until it is almost falling apart. Wrap it around your base and without letting go of the base or the dryer sheet, spray your midtone/main colour, then pull off your dryer sheet once it's dry.

Which chapter does the Crux Terminatus box go best with? I don't have any Space Marines yet.
