Would losing Ultramar even be that big of a deal?

Terra is important because it has the Golden Throne. Mars is important because it has the Void Dragon. Cadia was important because it kept the Eye of Terror from turning into the Great Rift.

But Ultramar? It’s just a collection of planets with no broader strategic importance to the Imperium. Sure Guilliman has sentimental feelings about it but it’s not particularly important. Hell, it’s not even close to Terra.

Played in a small RTT over the weekend. Top of turn one dark eldar wych bombz incubi bomb, and solitare assaulting my backfield in round one was insane. Turning off overwatch was also insane. Deleted my warrior blob and maimed my wraith. Won by 1 point thanks to a terraform. And my void dragon taking 3 FNP on 1 wound left.

Round 2 beat a very soulful BA good stuff list.

Round 3 lost against a teammate running some crazy admech halo shoot and scoot list because I forgot to activate a unit to score a secondary bottom of 5.

The rerolls in this game are out of control. I say this playing 10 Tesla immortals with a plasmamcer.

The game system is a joke. When you throw as many dice as you do with as many rerolls as you get, the average result becomes so fucking consistent. The general wounds creep and attack creep in the game is insane and they should just remove dice rolling from attacking at this point and make shit just do damage.

A chainsword on a sergeant is 6 hits. 6 hits! You used to be fucking stoked to have a special rule letting you give tacticals a chainsword. Marines with 3 attacks on the charge? That was gas. It's all flat averages mush now, and takes a year to roll all those dice.

I played like 2 games of index 10th and called it good, got flashbacks to guardsmen throwing 150 dice with psychic powers letting them reroll hits and wounds. It's a farce.

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about modern re:re:re;fwd:re-rollhammer, because I like games that endorse you finding ways to have several interactions to significantly effect outcomes and practically want you to find the most broken combinations possible. But I have this old man yelling at clouds feeling that 40k was better when T5 and 4 wounds was considered ridiculously resilient, and the most important named characters you could field for quite a high points cost had these insanely god-tier abilities like "Friendly units within 6" get to re-roll 1's to hit in melee."

Maybe I'm just lazy because I can't be bothered to try and memorize the Path of Exile-ass interaction tree for all the units, stratagems, detachment rules, keywords, and unit special rules.

Every edition has its problems and will always look better in hindsight. You can play whatever you want with your friends and it'll be fun. The main benefit of playing an older ruleset is it doesn't change, so nobody in your playgroup will be disappointed by rules changes, and nothing is going to suddenly break your meta. That said, everything that is broken stays broken forever, so then you havr to come to some sort of gentleman's agreement of what bits are okay and which aren't, which can lead to disappointment. Both have their benefits, and issues. It's just a matter of what is going to keep your playgroup the happiest

Older editions in general had much better army customization. The 3.5e Chaos Space Marine codex is the gold standard imo, find a pdf if you can. You could tailor your army to your heart's content.and really make it your own. Nowadays, equipment options are extremely limited and you are funneled into using a pre-made named character as the leader of your army instead of an OC guy you came up with yourself. All for "balance".
At its core though, modern rules complexity in 40k comes down to memorizing strategems, matchups and unit special abilities (which were rare in older editions) so you don't get blindsided by your opponent, whereas in the past, positioning mattered more. An example of this is how vehicles used to work, where instead of high Toughness and Wounds they had specific armor facings. Vehicles would be weaker when hit from the sides and from the back, and many units just didn't have enough firepower to damage them at all, so you really needed that anti-tank unit. The game was more rock-paper-scissors and was better off for it.
Most importantly however the feeling of fun has just been sucked out from the game. There's too much focus on balance and especially "balanced" terrain, and fun RNG has been removed (the entire psychic phase was just deleted for one). It's a competitive game now instead of a fun-with-friends game but imo this is a misguided direction to go in because a wargame like Warhammer will never be balanced.
10th is admittedly an easy game to get into and if you do decide to get into it I suggest reading up on Crusade rules. It's a far cry from editions past but it encourages creativity and making in-game decisions according to what would look cool rather than metawhore shit

There's nothing wrong with a game that endorses finding several interactions to get an edge. But that's not good for 40k, where I'm investing 100's in dollars and so many hobby and painting hours.

Let no one ever lie to you: there has not been a day in the lifetime of this game where things were balanced. The difference in the old game was that the low number of dice rolls made it so even the best stuff could whiff, and even the worst stuff could hit. There was proper variance. Go compare some of the things today in the game. Compare a landraider to a repulsor executioner, point for point, and tell me if the 40 shot tank is better or the 11 shot tank for the same cost. Scouts have the most flexibility with both infiltrate and scout, but suck at basically everything else. For me it seems like they are best for T1 moveblocking to fuck your opponent's board control and get an early advantage

Combi lt seems to be ideal for being an objective/action monkey with lone op and the ability to escape just about anything, but considering his smaller footprint and being solo idk about his use for screening or moveblocking

Infiltrators and incursors... I'm not sure, like more durable scouts taken in different directions

Reivers seem like some kind of jack of all trades, maybe with some assassination niche

Are artillery pieces ever worthwhile?
