I honestly, unironically cannot understand the universal obsession with Japan. Is it just some anime-induced delusion? I gave it several tries and it is unquestionably the most overrated travel destination in the world.

If I were to sum up Japan in one word, it would be "superficial". It all looks nice but if you look under the facade just a little bit then it's all fucking shit. The fake pleasantries are one example of this but there's tons of others: the culture of cute/cosy cafes and restaurants dotted around Japanese cities that actually all sell the exact same sub-par and boring products; the food culture of making it look extra nice and colorful but then it's actually just some bland and completely uninspired flavor plus a random selection of pickled vegetables whose compatibility with the other food is severely questionable; the overall autistic retardation of the people that sucks the fun out of any event, izakaya, or club and makes even nightlife seem like a chore.

Honestly, choose any random destination in Asia and I guarantee that you will have more fun, eat more interesting food, and enjoy yourself more than in Japan.

I guess I could understand wanting to go to Japan specifically if you want to see their temples and shrines, but then even that I enjoyed equally if not more in, say, China or Thailand.

Japan is a fucking meme.

It's rather safe and clean compared to a lot of beginner traveling destinations, it's exotic to westerners, Japan has a foothold in pop culture due to a lot of media it produces, and it has an amazing public transportation system. It's very easy to see why people would pick it when deciding where to travel outside of the western bubble. Different strokes for different folks, maybe you just enjoy other stuff and that's just fine.

Okay. How much of the world is ugly on the surface? Especially the Third World. So much hideousness along the roadsides. People go to Japan for the aesthetic. Unlike Europe, where everyone treats a below-average guy like a non-person, you can easily buy companionship in Japan. This makes low-value males cream their pants in joy.
>it's all fucking shit
Compared to what? Have you looked under the surface of a Bangkok night market? What about the kitchen of your favorite Mexican restaurant during peak hours? You're comparing Japan to some fictional utopian world of perfect people, a place which doesn't exist.

That's a selling point, you know. In a world full of smooth talkers and easy laughs, the socially challenged 4chan user feels painfully alone and unwanted. In Japan, he doesn't feel out of place, he feels right at home.

no niggers + excellent infrastructure + great nature + anime + decent-enough brothels + bike-able + trains go everywhere + locals don't scam you + anime + no niggers

If you can't understand why some people might enjoy peacefully taking a local train trip out to the middle of nowhere at a clean and non-dysfunctional train station without bribing anyone or getting harassed by an authoritarian government and then taking a 2am stroll at your destination without nightskins giving you the evil eye for no reason, then that's on you. Obviously other asian countries are also great to travel in, but Japan is objectively still one of the best places to just zone out and wander for a while without worrying about stupid shit.

It is rather sad that it's getting so popular with norms now though. I preferred when the whitoid stereotypes were being a gross weeb otaku/english teacher as opposed to the current growing stereotype of being some douchebag geomaxxer/influencer.

China and Thailand, as you mention, certainly beat Japan in some regards, but Japan pretty obviously excels in others. Maybe I'd take your argument more seriously if you said you preferred Taiwan since I've heard it's like Japan but slightly less autistic and less overtourism, but I don't fucking want to learn Taiwanese. Japan remains #1 for me. I say this as someone who desperately wants to learn another asian language and get immersed in another country, but I just haven't felt that spark for anywhere else. Maybe China should make some fucking cartoons about sexy high school girls if they actually gave a shit about beating Japan at being based.

tier 2 cities like Fukuoka and Nagoya are nice but have less built-in resources for expats, especially you don’t know Japanese. Tokyo gets labeled as soulless but I find that it offers the most opportunities for expats. As long as you’re not working in traditional international or Japanese corporate environments, I think Tokyo can be very rewarding with practically endless hobby, socializing, and other side activities. Still the macro trade-off with Japan, or even South Korea, compared to SEA is general stability and modern infrastructure for less vibrant interactions. In many ways places like Thailand and Malaysia are the emerging Asian economic power houses with tons of exciting opportunities. I lived in Japan for two years in the early 2010s. Although I was working for an American government contractor the experience was great. I had an apartment near Yokohama but had tons of friends further out. The pace of life in the smaller towns like Chiba and areas near Sagami Bag south of Yokosuka were idyllic. In short, I’d recommend trying out Japan for six months to a year. You may like it. Both city and smaller cities have tons to offer.

I enjoy being able to go for a night walk in a *sketchy* part of town and the only hazard I have to deal with is touts and cute girls. I love the fact that service here isnt some *inconvenience* to the business owner and is part of the product. And I love the easily accessible natural beauty that's only 45mins away by train. I lived in Japan for about 5 years and graduated from a university there, while I was there I unironically developed pre-diabetes. I did not know most of their food contained MSG and were filled with sugar and additives. Here in Canada at least there's a lot more awareness about eating shitty food. I will probably travel to Japan this year, but looking through amazon.co.jp there's not much choice for healthy food eaters. This is the country that starved to death during the second world war after all.

I'm with you about hating food in Japan (ramen is just salty noodles, sushi is raw fish lmao), but I can't understand how dumb you have to be to develop diabetes while preaching about "food awareness" and uttering the words "healthy food eaters" while looking at amazon for groceries.
My man, if you were 1% aware you'd be buying wholefoods and fucking cooking instead of becoming diabetic, if you were 2% aware you'd be looking at the labels before buying any processed food. Instead of blaming an entire country for your diabetes because you "did not know most of their food contained MSG and were filled with sugar and additives", I suggest you develop some responsibility for your actions and actually practice what you preach about "food awareness".

>its probably just me but I always buy like 10+kg of food products and some cute stuff like plushies and other merch because I let my materialist self lose (i mainly buy for my gf, but she buys likewise stuff for me).
Last but not least, japan is safe and I dont even talk about being robbed.
1st time when I was in harajuku with my gf, she left a bag from kiddieland with stuff worth around 100dol+ on the main street (we sat on the bench for like 5min and she just forgot to pick it up). 20min later I asked her where is her bag and we returned to the bench. It took us like 35-40min total, someone layed it down on the same bench and leave it in the open, so it could be easier to spot it. It remained unopened, while herds of people went about their day to the point that it was hard to get back to the bench.
Japan and japs got their problems, but still they have amazing qualities.

I flew into Poland on Air Arabia and about half of the plane was migrant laborers with work visas. Polish immigration interrogated each one before admitting or detaining them as they saw fit. Being an American, they passed me through in seconds.

Certain countries are best for connoisseurs of civilizational achievement. Others are mutt migrant economic zones with nature or jobs being their primary draw. It's interesting to see the divergence.

Why not go to Athens over Tokyo?

>not as insanely far away as Japan
>warm most of the year
>perfect merge of insanely beautiful nature with great ancient architecture
>not as many normie tourists around (outside of season)
>overall cheaper
>actual friendly locals so probably easier to get laid for autist despite society being kind of extraverted (but because of that - also more accepting and emphatetic - no bug-like status obsessed mind, more laid back)

I was going to tell her where I was from and ask her if she was interested in marriage. I was going to say she could learn English or I could learn Vietnamese, I didn't care. She was alone, but when she went to her motorcycle I pussed out because I hadn't typed my whole spiel into google translate yet.

I didn't get a picture but she was beautiful.

Middle Eastern countries are shown by various indicators to be as safe as or safer than Japan.
They are also more hospitable than Japan, which is reflected in the words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): "Welcome your guests, and give them hospitality. Treat them with a special feast on the first day, and entertain them for three days. but anything more than that will be considered charity".

For example, in Arabian Nights, there is a scene in which a prince who is attacked by bandits on a journey and left penniless is treated for three days in a foreign tailor's store, and only afterwards is he advised by his master to become a lumberjack and work there. This is another reflection of the traditional rules of hospitality.

Neither Japanese people nor Japanese cities are beautiful, as a general rule. How many public gardens line the sidewalks of Tokyo? You can go to a straight-up Third World shithole like Bogota and see beautifully manicured pocket green spaces everywhere you look, full of flowering plants. Oh, and Bogota also has public trash cans.

Rudeness? Japanese people are very judgmental and closed-off to foreigners, especially foreigners who speak very little Japanese.

Yes it obviously happens.
People have good experiences, and bad experiences.
Depends who you are, and whether the girl likes you.
Some girls are just going to be rascist.
If your fat / old / dirty, then you are more likely to get shitty service than if you are handsome.
Even if you are a handsome model in your own country, some jap girl are just going to be very rascist towards foreigners, or they will be greedy and try to scam them.

I really loved japan, and had lots of good experiences. But one bad experience was the ticket lady for bullet train tried to sell me two tickets, when I was clearly alone, and then laugh it off as a mistake, which would have scammed me out like 130$.
