I honestly, unironically cannot understand the universal obsession with Japan. Is it just some anime-induced delusion? I gave it several tries and it is unquestionably the most overrated travel destination in the world.

If I were to sum up Japan in one word, it would be "superficial". It all looks nice but if you look under the facade just a little bit then it's all fucking shit. The fake pleasantries are one example of this but there's tons of others: the culture of cute/cosy cafes and restaurants dotted around Japanese cities that actually all sell the exact same sub-par and boring products; the food culture of making it look extra nice and colorful but then it's actually just some bland and completely uninspired flavor plus a random selection of pickled vegetables whose compatibility with the other food is severely questionable; the overall autistic retardation of the people that sucks the fun out of any event, izakaya, or club and makes even nightlife seem like a chore.

Honestly, choose any random destination in Asia and I guarantee that you will have more fun, eat more interesting food, and enjoy yourself more than in Japan.

I guess I could understand wanting to go to Japan specifically if you want to see their temples and shrines, but then even that I enjoyed equally if not more in, say, China or Thailand.

Japan is a fucking meme.

It's rather safe and clean compared to a lot of beginner traveling destinations, it's exotic to westerners, Japan has a foothold in pop culture due to a lot of media it produces, and it has an amazing public transportation system. It's very easy to see why people would pick it when deciding where to travel outside of the western bubble. Different strokes for different folks, maybe you just enjoy other stuff and that's just fine.

I'm from the UK and this just isn't impressive. The beer is piss water tailored to Americans(which are everywhere). The touts are annoying. The music and lights are too loud. Drugs are by far too hard to come by. Women are too pricey.

I'd just rather have gone to Spain or Thailand for holiday with my mates than this trash.

>superficial
Okay. How much of the world is ugly on the surface? Especially the Third World. So much hideousness along the roadsides. People go to Japan for the aesthetic. Unlike Europe, where everyone treats a below-average guy like a non-person, you can easily buy companionship in Japan. This makes low-value males cream their pants in joy.
>it's all fucking shit
Compared to what? Have you looked under the surface of a Bangkok night market? What about the kitchen of your favorite Mexican restaurant during peak hours? You're comparing Japan to some fictional utopian world of perfect people, a place which doesn't exist.
>autistic retardation
That's a selling point, you know. In a world full of smooth talkers and easy laughs, the socially challenged 4chan user feels painfully alone and unwanted. In Japan, he doesn't feel out of place, he feels right at home.

no niggers + excellent infrastructure + great nature + anime + decent-enough brothels + bike-able + trains go everywhere + locals don't scam you + anime + no niggers

If you can't understand why some people might enjoy peacefully taking a local train trip out to the middle of nowhere at a clean and non-dysfunctional train station without bribing anyone or getting harassed by an authoritarian government and then taking a 2am stroll at your destination without nightskins giving you the evil eye for no reason, then that's on you. Obviously other asian countries are also great to travel in, but Japan is objectively still one of the best places to just zone out and wander for a while without worrying about stupid shit.

It is rather sad that it's getting so popular with norms now though. I preferred when the whitoid stereotypes were being a gross weeb otaku/english teacher as opposed to the current growing stereotype of being some douchebag geomaxxer/influencer.

China and Thailand, as you mention, certainly beat Japan in some regards, but Japan pretty obviously excels in others. Maybe I'd take your argument more seriously if you said you preferred Taiwan since I've heard it's like Japan but slightly less autistic and less overtourism, but I don't fucking want to learn Taiwanese. Japan remains #1 for me. I say this as someone who desperately wants to learn another asian language and get immersed in another country, but I just haven't felt that spark for anywhere else. Maybe China should make some fucking cartoons about sexy high school girls if they actually gave a shit about beating Japan at being based.

Rural areas are outright scary with almost nothing, smaller sities is where it might be at
I can tell how they invested heavily in a single city and not everywhere, even ignoring beautiful places that could be great for older tourists

Japans culture just seems the most foreign, while also being the most modern.

I dont wanna go to a third world country to see vastly different culture because i like roads and places being clean.

So japan SEEMS like itd give me a chance to see a culture that does things vastly different from america, but also has a modern infrastructure, is clean, and safe.

tier 2 cities like Fukuoka and Nagoya are nice but have less built-in resources for expats, especially you don’t know Japanese. Tokyo gets labeled as soulless but I find that it offers the most opportunities for expats. As long as you’re not working in traditional international or Japanese corporate environments, I think Tokyo can be very rewarding with practically endless hobby, socializing, and other side activities. Still the macro trade-off with Japan, or even South Korea, compared to SEA is general stability and modern infrastructure for less vibrant interactions. In many ways places like Thailand and Malaysia are the emerging Asian economic power houses with tons of exciting opportunities. I lived in Japan for two years in the early 2010s. Although I was working for an American government contractor the experience was great. I had an apartment near Yokohama but had tons of friends further out. The pace of life in the smaller towns like Chiba and areas near Sagami Bag south of Yokosuka were idyllic. In short, I’d recommend trying out Japan for six months to a year. You may like it. Both city and smaller cities have tons to offer.

Japan is cool. It’s extremely safe. The worst thing that will probably happen to you is you get drunk and wake up in a strange place. Yes, a lot of it is consumerist, but Japanese people aren’t disgustingly indulgent like Americans are so, they aren’t ugly obese monsters who uglify their cities because brown imports destroyed the nice parts. There’s no trash strewn around the place. For a first time traveler Japan is ideal.

As much as I love to shit on Indians for driving wages down and being nepotistic and generally just being way too high in population as well as being better goyslaves than almost anyone else, make no mistake: they're 5% as bad as actual American blacks, at worst. They don't shoot and stab and harass strangers and completely ruin communities, for the most part. I learned Japanese, moved to Japan and have been living happily. Many reasons, but this counts among them >>2799488

And it’s true that there’s some Indians (and SEA people) around, mainly staffing konbinis and cheap cafes etc. in city centers. My experience has been good, to be honest. I presume getting here selects to better ones among them, plus the existing Japanese rules and regulations work on them. I would avoid living close to them, I guess. Just know Japanese and I’m sure your agent will tell what areas to avoid when looking for a room. It was like that for me.

America has been in a Tsundere relationship with Japan since the 1850 with some of the most violent and peaceful mood swings in recorded history.
They say a monk in Edo Japan predicted hundreds of years from then a great empire forged from resiting kings would one day bring the rising sun litterally onto the lands.

Jokes aside I live in Japan (mind you I came here for work mandates and not out of direct desire). Japan has alot of GLARING flaws however, I would tolerate these flaws rather than dealing with the BS of many other parts of the world America included.
I enjoy being able to go for a night walk in a *sketchy* part of town and the only hazard I have to deal with is touts and cute girls. I love the fact that service here isnt some *inconvenience* to the business owner and is part of the product. And I love the easily accessible natural beauty that's only 45mins away by train. I like not getting entirely jewed house hunting or renting becuase real-estate here isnt utterly pozzed by kike private equity firms in the US. Yeah they have ugy modern architecture and there is a huge issue of social problems like loneliness and stress but keep in mind its what you make it.

I don't even care about the cultural crap like castles and temples and whatnot, I just want to go to Tokyo to eat food I can't get in the US, buy my wife some nice quality cosplay lingerie, and maybe try out the hot springs somewhere.

I typically go to Jakarta every few years because that's where my wife is from, though ethnically Chinese. We're going to Lombok next year.

I lived in Japan for about 5 years and graduated from a university there, while I was there I unironically developed pre-diabetes. I did not know most of their food contained MSG and were filled with sugar and additives. Here in Canada at least there's a lot more awareness about eating shitty food. I will probably travel to Japan this year, but looking through amazon.co.jp there's not much choice for healthy food eaters. This is the country that starved to death during the second world war after all.

I'm with you about hating food in Japan (ramen is just salty noodles, sushi is raw fish lmao), but I can't understand how dumb you have to be to develop diabetes while preaching about "food awareness" and uttering the words "healthy food eaters" while looking at amazon for groceries.
My man, if you were 1% aware you'd be buying wholefoods and fucking cooking instead of becoming diabetic, if you were 2% aware you'd be looking at the labels before buying any processed food. Instead of blaming an entire country for your diabetes because you "did not know most of their food contained MSG and were filled with sugar and additives", I suggest you develop some responsibility for your actions and actually practice what you preach about "food awareness".

>food is good to amazing, you literaly cant eat bad
>infrastructure is amazing, you can get to anywhere
>hotels and accomodation is usualy high standard (minus small rooms, but its a standrad)
>people mind there own buisness ,so its amazing for introverts
>you have a good mix of culture, pop-culture, sightseeing, nature and other leisure acrivities
>if youre not a hamburger and only dwell in tokyo and kyoto, japan is full of atractions that are not overcrowded, you just need to do a reaserch beforehand
>its probably just me but I always buy like 10+kg of food products and some cute stuff like plushies and other merch because I let my materialist self lose (i mainly buy for my gf, but she buys likewise stuff for me).
Last but not least, japan is safe and I dont even talk about being robbed.
1st time when I was in harajuku with my gf, she left a bag from kiddieland with stuff worth around 100dol+ on the main street (we sat on the bench for like 5min and she just forgot to pick it up). 20min later I asked her where is her bag and we returned to the bench. It took us like 35-40min total, someone layed it down on the same bench and leave it in the open, so it could be easier to spot it. It remained unopened, while herds of people went about their day to the point that it was hard to get back to the bench.
Japan and japs got their problems, but still they have amazing qualities.

It's the only place in the world that's both distinct from just "America but they speak a different language" and safe enough you're unlikely to be stabbed.

If Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, France, Peru, Mexico, South Africa, Turkey, Egypt, India, Thailand, and Cambodia weren't some flavor of shithole they'd all be cooler than Japan but I like keeping both kidneys so the only halfway exotic place to visit left is Japan.

The real "why go here" places are South Korea and Taiwan. Same experience as Japan but more likely to get abducted off the street by organ harvesters.

You say this because you're an American. Your currynigs are top of the food chain educated brahmin's or have been there for some generations. In Europe and the rest of the world the currynigs are actual gutter Indians, Paki's and Bangladeshi's. Extremely rapey and behave like they're fresh out of a Delhi slum. The last two also have Islamic religious extremist tendencies on top of that.

It's kinda weird the the Pakistani diaspora is like that. At home Sharia makes them somehow less rapey than the neighboring Hindus, but their diaspora seems to be their gropiest hicks.
