>This was a terrible, terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to their families. We can at least take solace in the fact that they were warned before the implosion occurred that the hull was about to experience catastrophic failure and they were thus fully aware of their imminent and instantaneous deaths, and were actively trying to escape this horrific fate because we know they dropped their ballasts in a futile attempt to frantically ascend to the surface. Pure, visceral fear and helplessness was surely felt by all. In fact, they undoubtedly could acoustically hear the hull delaminating in real time, regardless of the warning system. I can picture it in my brain. Imagine the camera panning up to the 19 year old's face as he looks to his father in their final moments of absolute existential dread. Cut to dolly track close up of Stockton Rush initiating the ballast release function, possibly screaming, we'll have to brainstorm that shot. Cut to outside the vessel with a full view of the implosion, minimal to no music or score playing for full effect. Anyways, terrible tragedy. Heart goes out to families.

From what I understood from the documentary, the cost he was trying to cut wasn't the cost of building the submarine since that's a one time investment, it was the cost of transporting it. He used carbon fibre because it was lighter and thus easier and cheaper to transport.

I was watching this at a friend's house and all his Redditor friends were there and they were all constantly like "BROOO COURSE YOU DON'T MAKE IT OUT OF CARBON FIBER LOLOLOL" and "THEY SHOULD HAVE ADDED MORE LAYERS", as if they were experts on submarine construction or something and it was obvious to them that it was a bad design ("LOGITECH CONTROLLER LOLOLOL"). Shit made me so mad, retards obviously knew nothing at all about any of this, because who the fuck does, but they were still acting all "well duh of course you don't build a submarine like that". Why are people like this man, I fucking hate people so much. It's the little things like this that make me want to nuke the entire fucking planet, I hate people so fucking much

No, this sub imploded. When the fibers begin to snap, it weakens the entire structure and will lead to the sub being crushed by the increasing pressure due to the depth they were at. It's like crushing a soda can with your hand. Nearly impossible when it's unopened but very easy once you poke holes in it. That's what happened to oceangate.

Like the one kid who was on there didn't even want to go on there right? And was nervous about it? Imagine having a bad feeling about the whole thing in the first place and then when you're inside and you start going down, you hear the insane """seasoning""" sound and it only gets louder and worse as you go down.

For the same reason the US Navy used game controllers. They've been tested to hell and back and are designed to last even when getting manhandled daily by sugar-drunk teenage boys. The controller was probably the only quality item that OceanGate ever owned.

Once they heard the fucking loud BANG during one of the dives, he didn't get on the next one. But that next dive went through with zero problems and then he had two actual billionaires lined up for the one after that. He probably thought that he could save his company if everything went smoothly and at least one of them was convinced to become an investor.

Yes, you can design it rated for a specific depth and you'd inspect it regularly for any surface/internal cracks since they'd only be good for a certain number of cycles. This guy bought pre-made tubes designed for aircraft which had already gone beyond their designed life. He really didn't like testing nor inspecting for internal damage even after hearing pops. And he left it outside in freezing weather where ice could form between layers.

Would the Titanic tourism business idea work if you built the sub correctly instead of this carbon fiber nonsense, or is building a safe sub large enough to haul tourists too expensive to be viable?

But if you do that, why not a controller that can do both in case the bluetooth fails? A regular PS4 controller can be used via bluetooth or a micro usb cable for example and these controllers go for 20 eurobucks at this point.

You'd instantly get the bends. Decompression for divers is 10 meters per minute at most for double digit meters below the surface. I'm sure you'd get even weirder issues like oxygen becoming fucking weird at those sorts of pressures.

Also 4km of air is far less pressure than 4km of water.

I think this was actually it, the turning point where it became really obvious to everyone that boomers aren't actually smart.

Like it's one thing for boomers to force their grandchildren to compete with jeets for low paying jobs they wouldn't have t aken at entry level 40 years ago. They know they're doing that, they know they're making the world worse, and they're happy that they get to do it. But it's quite another thing for this to come back and KILL a millionaire boomer. To kill him, embarassingly, and several other also fabulously wealthy boomers, all at once.

It was jarring. It was like watching a dark sorcerer you've been afraid of and secretly in awe of slip and hang himself with his own cowel.

For the general public obviously, because they were only made aware of it's existence mere days before the implosion occurred.
The ensuing investigations and news coverage made it clear that people within the operator and some simply aware of it had voiced strong doubts to outright warnings about the impending safety failures.
This was completely avoidable if not for a delusional CEO that fancied himself a Musk like figure and openly bragged about his proclivity for "breaking rules".
Those rules being the rules dictating safe operation of submersibles
