Well yea... that's the point of the story and is a central theme in Cyberpunk 2077 in both the game and Edgerunners.

Night City is the poster child for the nightmare hell world of Cyberpunk which just takes our rat race and cranks it up to the point that corporations are freely allowed to murder people with no consequence and anyone that isn't in this backstabbing circle of Corpos is a person literally struggling to stay alive in a future that is infinitely more violent than our time.

The safest city in the American continent in this time has a murder rate of 70 out of 10,000. That is apocalyptically violent, even El Salvador in its worst spots was estimated to be lower.

The truth was always that the world outside of Night City wasn't worth escaping to and the world inside it wasn't worth living in. Lucy kept to the naive dream that somewhere wasn't a corporate hellscape. David did too, and it was the dream that he was special enough to beat cyber-psychosis while raising to to the top.
