My take is that Kris is in on whatever the plan is, but also has limits and things he's just not willing to go through/allow, particularly where it refers to harming people.

And my theory is that whatever it is that happened with Dess and broke Kris and Noelle apart, he feels responsible about it, and this is all his attempt to make it right. Just finished chapter 4, it was pretty good. Chapter 3 and 4 really made Susie a genuinely good character. Also the story telling got a lot better and less autistic. Not that i expect this from deltarune obviously, it has to be autistic/toby fox/undertale-ish but it is good that chapter 4 was THE chapter to be serious for a moment.
For example, that scene where Susie screams at Ralsei for not telling them everything and ralsei being like crying and scared saying "im sorry, i know things but..." was genuinely pretty sad. It feels like a cutscene JUST for the people that think Ralsei is evil

Noelle and Kris are childhood friend with many close memories. Noelle said Kris and Rudy are the only two people she can say no too. Dess was clearly a bit influence in both of their lives. He used to play the piano for her, but was too shy to do it with her in the room. Her cactus is named after him, she has pictures of him on her wall, an a screensaver of him (the rest are her family and one generic picture). Kris visits her at night after chapter 2 just to apologise and hand her back her watch in probably the most notable moment of independant action he has in the game so far and gives her advice to keep her safe. If you wait for them to finish you see Noelle almost confessing to him there on the spot. And if Kris sees his soul he runs out of the room with her in one of his most emotive spirtes, showing genuine fear that you would hurt her. If you equip the ring to her he almost kills himself in the process just to hurt you, leaving himself half alive. If you see Noelle during the dark world and catch a glimpse of her "thanking you" he collapses on the spot. He also destroys the candles out of anger if (You) try to light one for Noelle. When he gets called by Carol at the end of the snowgrave chapter 4 he has a strong reaction to (You) getting access to Noelle again.
There has never been a single independant moment where Kris has ever done anything bad to Noelle and he makes a great effort to help her if we ever hurt her. Makes you think

I think Kris just ended up starting to care for Susie and thus is starting to go against the knight or otherwise have second thoughts.

I like to think this music and the empty Green room fits well with Kris' past. It's supposed to represent Tenna's backstory, but it also fits Kris as well. Asgore is no longer at home because of the divorce, Noelle doesn't come to visit as much and Asriel went to college. And it's in the green room you learn from Ramb that Kris and Noelle used to play together.
