They should have never allowed SEGA to die then. The whole reason the idea of "cool games" and "adult games" even exist is because of SEGA being the first to really capture that. Sony was able to come in and overtake that and it led SEGA kids (those who didn't want the kiddy, uncool Nintendo games) to being enthralled by the PS1. The $299 price helped too obviously. After being taken from SEGA and locked in with PlayStation, they got into the PS2 (although PS2 was more of its own phenomenon being the best valued product in consumer electronic at the game). Yakuza Kiwami was ported to switch last year, and the only reason the series hadn’t made it to the platform prior was Nagoshi having a complex about the platform being for kids. Once he left the company, SEGA promptly ported it. Dunno where the idea started for him though, because Yakuza 1 & 2 were also on Wii U. None of it was on Nintendo.

They’ve had mature games on their platforms for decades. Hell, they’ve been fucking mature games for a long while too. Eternal Darkness on the GameCube, Bayonetta 2 & 3, and most recently the new Famicom Detective Club game.

I don’t believe you need a Nintendo dev kit to release on switch. I know a few indie devs who were able to get their games on the platform by just using the software SDK. You do have communicate with them, as with any platform holder (Steam included) prior to release but given the state of the Eshop it’s pretty light. I don't agree for the simple fact that the way the two situations have unfolded is wildly different.

Sega was chasing multiple markets and constantly unveiling something new to buy over and over again segmenting their market making it impossible to keep up with their releases or with what you had to buy. They also overwhelmed people with costs for platforms that maybe only had 100 games in its entire lifespan or add-ons that were wildly unsuccessful. The Dreamcast was their last hurrah, and they released it with the VMU which just further added complications into the mix. Yes, it was somewhat future-conscious with the approach to the internet, but Sony's aim at DVDs was the smarter one in hindsight because it appealed to near future rather than the slightly farther future.

Sony's only "main" issues so far have been their obsession with high cost releases and zeroing in on GaaS to chase the money printer. They've learned from the Move and Wonderbook to not really chase trends when it comes to device releases, and they heavily supported the PSVR1 which led to a lot of good will for them until they underperformed with their approach to the PSVR2. The issue they have on their hands currently is that they're porting things to PC which devalues their brand as you don't need their specific devices to play their games, and they're still continuing to spend wildly on their projects rather than take lessons from the success of Astro Bot or even something they didn't make like Expedition 33 to lower their costs.

Microsoft is the new Sega. Everything about their situation and all their failures has pushed them towards now being third-parties in the market despite years of trying to claw their way out from third. Sony's only going to end up as another Sega if they make enormous missteps in the process on par with Microsoft which they have yet to make. Right now they just need to be cautious about their approach to the Switch 2 and actually release low budget stuff

The PS5 Pro is $700 by Sony's terms. Yes, the realistic thing is you need the disc add-on because you'd be retarded not to get it, but the fact of the matter is they consider it a $700 machine. The costs to make it will also go down over the years and I doubt internally that add-on costs more than like $4 to produce, though I absolutely expect the meme price of 599 US dollars to be the standard for the PS6.

Sony's main problem right now is their ridiculous spending and chasing the GaaS trends. They have to stop making every game a AAA high-budget game and start to work with Team Asobi and funding lower budget games to get their profit expectations in check. They're sharing many of their third-parties with Nintendo and PC now, they don't really have many third-party exclusives now, and their old guard like Squeenix have realized it's not financially viable for them to be exclusive anymore thanks to the PS5.

If they can't lower their budgets and get shareholders to deal with the fact that their profit margins aren't going to be as enormous because of them not being as focused on AAA game releases then they're in for a world of hurt going into the PS7.

Sony right now are so dumb because they found themselves into a very comfortable position. Playstation has never been more profitable - they never made this much money before. All while delivering basically nothing.
Why? Because they make money with each GTA, FIFA and Fortnite microtransaction sold through Playstation. They only make games like Spiderman 2 or Horizon out of obligation at this point. The sales of a game like Horizon pale compared to the tens of millions they make every single month by doing nothing except letting Fortnite and GTA continue existing on their store. And they use all those profits by gambling on their own big liveservice hit again and again and so far this has only resulted into massive flops - but they don't care cause the microtransaction money just keeps rolling in.
