It couldn't maintain a consistent genre, it split into two timelines and then cancelled the main one, it forgot it had a story to tell, it flanderized itself in tone, it neglected its ensemble cast to pander to the most popular waifu, it drove off anyone who didn't like her, and then it couldn't pivot when her fans got bored and also moved on.

Sony being difficult was just an excuse to avoid acknowledging that the series was mismanaged. Nobody ever imposed anything on Senran Kagura that couldn't easily be worked around while maintaining its identity.

The spinoffs and splits and attempts to re-invent the wheel are direct results of the censorship. Burst Re;Newal literally topped Steam charts when it was released. Say what you want about the series' direction, but that is not an immediate franchise killer. Your main platform pulling the rug on you and straight up telling you that you can't make games like it any more is. Every official statement from Takaki and other developers of similar games corroborates this. Every time I see someone post some retarded bullshit like this, I can't help but feel they're trying to cover Sony's ass. Sony (and the rest of the industry following them) killed Senran Kagura. Period. No ands, ifs, or buts about it. This is not arguable.

Burst or Burst Re;Newal. All canon timelines diverge from them. Both have their draws, the latter is a remake of the former using Estival Versus assets, but not everyone likes the gameplay changes or some of the side content from the original getting dropped.

Burst Re;Newal had the same gameplay as the previous two games, and retold the first game's story. That means you don't need to be concerned about timelines, it had the original tone, and it focused on the actual main characters.

How even could Sony have ever been the problem? The series was born out of a desire to see boobs in 3D with the 3DS. If Sony wouldn't let them release their games, they could have (and did) release on Nintendo and PC. No, but you can judge by how they're handling similar games, Tokyo Clanpool being the standout example of a Vita ecchi moege that tried to release recently. Banned from Steam, censored by Nintendo and banned from a global release, and censored by GOG (and Playstation and Xbox were of course never even considered). That's the kind of trials you can expect any new Senran Kagura game to have to go through now. And Tokyo Clanpool was being handled by a publisher that has been staunchly pro-fanservice throughout the years, and even they are at the end of their rope, Now imagine what Marvelous thinks.
