The dev cycles are way too long, genuinely do think that's one of the main issues. Back then FF games all had separate universes but pretty similar vibes to one another. The voice changed over the years but if you played subsequent games you did see the throughline of the themes they explored and how the games iterated on one another, both in terms of story but also in terms of gameplay.
They all came off as being separate stories told by the same couple people, which in a sense, was true. It may seem pointless but this kind of cohesion was important to keep people interested in what is essentially an anthology series.
Now every other game is practically made by an all-new generation of devs and designers because they're all stuck in development hell for 5+ years. The last bit of the old guard is slowly rotating out. Without the semi-consistent voice, FF as a franchise has basically nothing except yellow chickens and flying marketable plushies. Other franchises have a singular character, world or storyline to milk endlessly.

I reckon that is also partially why the FF7 remake exists as it does in its current form, taking one of the most successful games and remixing its characters, setting and plot to milk it all over again is really the only way left to go.

The correct play years ago would have been to to get your characters into Fortnite and expose your characters to a younger generation. When time comes for Kingdom Hearts 4 trailers to start dropping, really make sure the marketing drives home that this is the start of a new saga so you might be able to convince people to jump into it without playing the others. Problem is that means nothing due to Microsoft never reporting numbers and the ones we know are dire. So when the Xbox version of FF16 - allegedly - sells 22000 copies word wide and it is enought for the 11th place you can imagine the sales of the top ten. Let's start with the gameplay. The big focus is on the eikon abilities, but the eikon abilities are all on MMO style cooldowns. There's nothing you can do about the cooldowns, you just use them and do your one 4-hit filler combo in the meantime. Compare to SoP or FF7R where all your cool shit uses a resource, and you're rewarded with said resource for staying on the offensive and engaging with the enemy. That isn't the case in XVI, you just dump your skills and fuck around swinging your 4-hit toothpick filling the time. That's boring. What makes it worse is that there's only one character, with one weapon. So you can't even change up your filler playstyle.
Character progression is on rails which is something FFXIII rightfully got shit on for. You get a new eikon every like 10 hours of gameplay and once you do get it there's no way to get anything else. You're storygated out of further cool shit. Character levels not only don't matter at all, but the exp gain is scaled so it stalls out when you start matching enemy levels, preventing you from grinding up. Not that it would matter, because those levels gain you nothing.
Weapon crafting is completely pointless. Each dungeon/boss gives you a material you use to upgrade to the next sword, which just raises your damage by +5 (meaningless). There's literally no point to this system existing, and yet 90% of all treasure you find are materials for this system that has nothing to craft.

There are moments in the game where you literally watch a 45 minute cutscene, regain control, walk five steps forward, and get thrust into another 45 minute cutscene. The moviegame bloat is unreal, complete with slow forced walk and talk segments, squeezing past narrow corridors, and 'hold the triggers to do thing' QTEs. There are over 20 HOURS of cutscenes in this game. And that's not including the stilted canned emote sidequest cutscenes you'll spend another 20 hours watching.
Sidequests are ripped straight out of FFXIV. They exist just to fill time and for nothing else. Listen to someone spend 10 minutes telling you how and why they need an object on the other side of the map. Walk over and pick it up. Go back. Bam, more crafting materials you can't use. Thrilling.
There is no exploration. There are four giant open world areas with nothing in them but MMO sidequests, and there are hallway dungeons. The hallway dungeons are also ripped straight from FFXIV with the same two trash packs -> mini boss -> two trash packs -> mini boss -> two trash packs -> final boss structure.
Eikon fights have spectacle, but that's all they have. Segments like the Phoenix fight at the start, or the Garuda fighting game segment, or the Phoenix vs Bahamut segment are all on rails and impossible to fail. They're cutscenes.
The only time the game is remotely challenging are in the chronostones (I think that's what they were called) where you have to use one specific eikon and fulfill challenges to keep your time up. The rest of the game you can sleep through. FF Mode isn't any better because you have all eikons out the gate and can just blast everything even more easily than in normal mode.

It's very clearly stitched together from several different drafts. You have shit like Ultima appearing in the demo wearing Joshua's face and robe. He then appears in the same guise leading Clive to Garuda. But then... Joshua isn't Ultima. Joshua is just Joshua and Ultima never appears wearing his guise again. It's never commented on, it's just obviously a draft in which Ultima used Phoenix to possess Joshua's corpse or something.
You spend the majority of the game's story dealing with Sanbreque and its political situation. Actually most of the cutscenes for the entire game's story are about it. So it must be important, right? Nope. It's just filler. Ultima is fucking around with Sanbreque trying to conquer a continent... that he already has control of. He's literally doing it for no reason. And once Olivier and Clive's mom die, nobody ever mentions the plotline again. It just vanishes, because it actually didn't matter.

The music has a handful of great tracks, but the majority of the soundtrack is bland, forgettable, cinematic trash. If you download the OST you'll see it has 8 discs. But listen to it, and you'll hear the same 5 or 6 songs. Over and over and over and over. There are songs on the OST that are LITERALLY the same song, but with slightly different mixing or intros. It also overuses the fuck out of the Prelude and the FF Main Theme, presumably because Soken thinks that's a shortcut to making it sound like Final Fantasy. Soken is probably one of the most misused aspects of the game. He was celebrated for doing shit like XIV's Alexander soundtrack, exciting rock beats and electronic shit. And then they told him to copy Skyrim or something. The only songs on the OST that sound like Soken are Do or Die and Titan Lost. And according to Soken he actually sneaked those songs into test builds and relied upon the praise for them from QA to make sure the higher ups wouldn't rip them out. Fucking unreal.

I completely agree, some small team made of passionate devs within Square Enix an experimental studio to see if they can make something as you say akin to Exp 33, I don't mean make Exp 33 but a passion project that the devs want to make but for whatever reason because of bureaucracy of the higher-ups their ideas can't get past pitch.

Clives time as a slave soldier for Sanbreque should not have been speed runned,, this is a good time to also do a lot of world building because Clive is just for the most part insignificant in the big picture during this period.
