Man, I miss when I knew nothing about Undertale. That first time playthrough was something else.

To be honest, REDACTED is more Gaster than Gaster himself and I actually wished Mystery Man never existed. What makes Gaster "Gaster" is that he is a unfinished forgotten character that was never meant to exist. REDACTED looks like an actual glitch room you could find in a videogame by accident.
Gaster being able to talk and making up a videogame where he specifically wrote furry gay fanservice kind of ruined his whole creepypasta atmosphere. This is like giving Herobrine a backstory and making him talk. It doesn't resemble the original character anymore.
Even so, Toby could have written Gaster similar to The Princess in IfYouSeeHeTurnOffTheGame. Gaster could have been a strange Slenderman that could appear ANYTIME when the screen transition to another room plays. The fun VALUE in Undertale was part of the same deal, you don't feel "safe" in the game, it's like you would encounter some shit like Farlands in any moment in old Minecraft.
That concept could also expand his "incomplete character" status even further, where he would try to reconstruct himself and make some kind of giygas monster for a final boss.
I can't pretend I'm not disappointed with canon Gaster. Windings don't even show up anymore.

Finally, Deltarune is the most nuanced examination of this idea. Your initial protagonist, Kris, actively resists and works against your influence on the world. Furthermore it's heavily implied that, Kris looking like the puppet, it's the other way around. At the same time though there are two characters who are likely to share the desires of the player. Susie wants "eternity" and to change the ending, which echoes a player who couldn't leave well enough alone in Undertale and dug deeper to complete Genocide. Noelle, on the other hand, echoes players who dug deeper into the game for things like Gaster, as someone who's eager to feel pain and has a strong interest in breaking video games.

If the player ever got into control of Susie or Noelle, it's highly likely that events will begin to play out like they did in the HH with Varik, only this time instead of it being just the player pushing the protag along a path, it would be Susie or Noelle egging you on to do something that is in hindsight really, really stupid.

Rather than the relationship being a one-sided force, there will be a true CONNECTION with the protagonist.

It is...but to achieve that eternity, what do you need to do? At the very least the first step towards freedom from Kris is doing the Weird Route, and Ralsei is terrified that any alternative to the prophecy will be worse. There's a game that came out recently that shows what I'm thinking of here: Hundred Line Last Defence Academy. In the first ending, Takumi (protag) gets the ability to loop back to the start of the game. They look at the result of the first run - couple of their friends dead and the academy in ruins - and go "I can do better than this." Spoilers: they can't. Every ending except the final one is a worse result than that first run, Takumi had been dodging minefields he didn't even know existed. Hell, the True Route ends with EVERYONE BUT ONE PERSON DEAD! If Takumi had just left things with that first ending instead of going "I can do better" things would have been a lot easier for everyone.

I feel like Deltarune's endgame is going to be similar to that. Kris's adherence to the prophecy will prove to be correct, and Susie's attempts to change things with our help will cause irreversible damage.

Right up until the final ending, which would be incredibly hard to get and involve meta shit.

Kris is the one holding OUR strings, manipulating the player to achieve their own goals and stomping down on any attempt to do otherwise.
