Mario Kart World has the courses set in a massive open world. In a Grand Prix, the first race is set on the first course, and all races after that are spent driving TO the next course, then one lap on that course. Random was a way to get around this, because it would randomly select from any course on the world map and give you three laps on that course instead of an interstate segment.

On paper, I like this change. Just because I want a random track doesn't mean I want a different racing experience.

In practice, I want a different racing experience either way, because the highways fucking suck. It was a decent idea, but the implementation is dog shit.

For the next game: Cut the distance between courses in half, make the highways an entirely different race, and use standings from that race to decide starting position and coin count. But you have to make coins actually worthwhile, and balance items so that people actually want to start in 1st.

I actually don't even hate the intermissions but you're not helping your point.

I don't see why it's worth getting defensive over when they deviate from the formula THIS much and the track design takes a hit for the worst. People want to drift, they want to use shortcuts. Some straight lines are fine, but when they remove the choice to even play regular tracks that's not a very good system ESPECIALLY when the traditional tracks are really good in this game, and it sucks that in these intermissions you're sometimes only playing HALF of one lap of the actual courses that got the most attention and love put into them. Those will always be the meat and potatoes of Mario Kart, and there is nothing wrong with wanting to play the real courses.

It is still the bridge that connects the two "cities" together. It doesn't help that a ton of these "connections" are impossible to discern from each other due to how samey their actual design is. The only thing that's different is the environment, but that doesn't affect the race in any meaningful way. That just boils down to sightseeing 80% of the time. Only a few intermissions actually have unique gimmicks that you wouldn't find in a regular course.

You're comparing an open world adventure game to a RACING game. An online race has to have some linearity. And when people linearity in a race, they don't mean literally driving in a straight line. That's not "open world". That's bad racing design. Simply forcing someone to drive down an intermission is not playing to the strength of an open world. The open world is only open as a single player experience. Online it's just a bunch of transmissions with breaks in between. There is no freedom to go off the track. You MUST drive the straight line or lose. Racing around a proper track is always going to be a better designed experience than driving in a straight line, I don't know how this is even up for debate. Before today, those who liked connected courses were often forced to play traditionalist 3-lap courses repeatedly because of competitivetards voting random en masse.

Now, the situation has been corrected, and people who enjoy Mario Kart WORLD can now enjoy Mario Kart WORLD as it was intended to be played.

Those who want only 3-lap courses over and over can return to playing 8 Deluxe.

I can confirm this does not happen. I just went online and did 5 races. This isn't a thing. If they ever do give you a regular option it's because there's no direct route to it from the course you're currently on, that course never being an option.

Nowhere in the advertisements was it saying you wouldn't be able to just play the proper tracks online. They already give you the option to drive in straight lines in knockout mode. You are missing the fact that there are countless connection courses to account for every single possible path between each individual course.

Many connection courses cannot be played in grand prixs or knockout tours and can only be played in races where people vote for the next connection.

If you try to prevent this from happening, you are actively preventing players from playing entire specifically-designed tracks that do not naturally occur in grand prixs or knockout tours.
