Nobody liked the intermission tracks and Nintendo hated that. The tracks themselves were fine, but you only got to play 1 lap of the tracks if you got an intermission. However, if you picked Random you would get 3 lap tracks. Now Nintendo made it so if you choose Random you'll get intermissions still, thus ruining the online.
Imagine if Smash Bros' online had an option to play Stock Matches if you didn't like Time Matches and then Nintendo took out the ability to play Stock Matches from the online entirely. That's what they did for Mario Kart.
