>gets used once in a recent trailer for a new game
>suddenly see a renewed interest in music from the late 90s or 2000s
Is it just the beginning of a resurgence and newfound appreciation for the classics?

It's funny how shit changes like this.

If I said I like Evanescence and Linkin Park on /v/ in the 2000s when they were actually charting and on the radio, I would have been laughed and mocked right out of here.

It makes me wonder about what shit in the past that I wasn't around for that is beloved now would have gotten me run out of town on a rail for admitting to liking it when it was actually happening.

N-Sync used to be seen as generic, teenybopper trash and then a Marvel movie used it and people came out and said "maybe they weren't so bad." Opinions change or maybe people are just more open to admitting they liked a song. I feel bad for the people who stuck by their bands getting run out by posers and normalfags.

I don't quite think it's just a nostalgia thing most of the time, I think it is also just re-evaluation in the time of modern products.
Like, people mocked the generic space marine gritty war shooter of the late 2000's, but at least it wasn't outright putrid like the neo-vomit of modern shooters.

zoomers have been doing a nu metal/pop punk/hardcore revival for like five years now.

so far most of the music to come out of it is super ass and derivative but some of it's alright, and it's cool to see aggressive music actually make a comeback after millennials gave up to cringe white guy funk fueled by high abv IPAs.

>appreciation for the classics

that can prevent new good stuff being made if unbalanced.

Look at how they use "classic" rock for commercials nowadays.
They've been doing for a long time, but now it's shameless.
And now the bands and musicians probably don't even own their own music anymore.

my theory is this

>all popular culture is manufactured

before the ubiquity of the internet it was pretty easy to create superstars and pick what was on the radio and such. this ended around the late 00s around the time when zoomers became teenagers. because the internet made music widely available it was no longer possible to manufacture popular music (so to speak) so what was popular at the time just stayed popular.

this is why zoomers like the same music millenials had at the equivalent ages

also, posting favorite evanescence cover:

Boomers are dying and so are all the dumbass reviewers that claimed Korn was a product of "Daddy issues" because the vocalist reasonably had some problems associated with being molested as a kid and his father choosing not to believe him. People are finally giving numetal and other early 00s stuff a chance.

Yeah I never understood that criticism. I get if you find the vocals themselves too whiny, but in terms of lyrical content and why those lyrics are made, it was baffling how hard they were railed because of it.

Plenty of zoomers unironically like music from the 00s especially considering it never improved since then. They only have nigger rap and wigger rap and billy anuslish and nothing else.
Music from the 00s to us today is like music from the 80s to people from the 00s. Remember how GTA Vice City was "retro" and had music from the 80s?
Do you feel like the 00s music is "retro"? It's literally better than the same shit and the same remixes you hear today

I agree. All good metal is from the 80s and 90s. Which is why I listened to dance music in the 00s and 10s. It was definitely better. Music got worse overall, because for example modern nu metal is even fucking worse than in the 00s, but you didn't mention that. Does rapcore even exist today?

Going Under definitely had that heavier, darker edge they were clearly going for. Bring Me to Life is iconic but itโ€™s been memed into oblivion and now just triggers flashbacks of AMV Hell and kids discovering โ€œdarkness.โ€ Honestly, something like Whisper or even My Immortal would've completely changed the tone into something more somber and, dare I say, actually emotional. But I guess they needed that "wake me up inside" energy to sell DVDs to middle schoolers.

The animators were definitely into torture porn. But I still liked getting uncomfortable and queasy from those scenes. Like you said, it shows how much being immortal can suck. Too many times you see an immortal get their limbs blown off and walk it off saying they "got used to it". Like fuck you are. Show me their suffering. A bit of resistance is fine, but no-one stays sane in the face of extreme pain

Makes sense, late 90s - early 2000s was an optimistic era when internet was still an emerging technology that more and more people had access to. Internet wasn't as consolidated as today and social media didn't exist in the same form as it does today. World was much ''smaller'' than it is today.

I've played plenty of games imitating this era that were great, Hypnospace, Hypnagogia etc. I hope there will be more and more games like these, especially ones with low poly 3D graphics.

Its natural that mainstream stuff that people already like is more memorable in the future, but its also important to remember that as time goes on, shit that seemed really bad when it comes out is actually remembered fondly because things that came out after were so much worse.
For example, i thought "PARTY ROCKERS IN THE HOUSE TONIGHT" was the stupidest, gayest shit on Earth when it came out and was a big meme here for years. It ened up being nowhere near as bad as things actually got, and I now look back at it fondly. Music from the late 00's just isn't very memorable

Tarja's vocals went to shit sometime toward the end of her stint with Nightwish. Not sure if something happened to her voice, if it was just age, or if it's just an affectation she was trying, but she began to sing with her mouth wide open, with a really bright nasally tone that sounded like shit, as opposed to the dark, cool timbre she was famous for. I struggle to listen to any live performances from End of an Era for that reason.

There's two main reasons off-topic threads on a given board are better than on their germane board. Firstly, is that because it's off-topic, it ensures more of a filter that there's a baseline level of engagement otherwise the standard user won't be interested enough to even enter the thread. Second, because it's off-topic, there's also a cap on the level of investment for most users and a greater level of effort into communicating across gaps in understanding. No one's expecting you to know the intricacies of a decade's worth of arguments and shitposts that can be evoked with a single word, no one's expecting that anon has engaged with the entry-level shit and so can talk about it in earnest. Hell, no one's expecting that anyone else knows shit about fuck but rather than be mad about it they're excited about it.

I think another important part of what makes off topic /vee/ threads so good is that people make higher effort posts because they know the thread could die at any minute. therefore, since whatever youre saying could be the last point you make about the topic until the next thread randomly appears in however many days or weeks, people subconsciously put more thought and actual meaning into what they say. theres much less time for irony or bullshitting

your post makes no sense. you say that Evanescence and Linkin Park were massively popular but then you say that they were actually not popular and hated because... a small minority of people on an anonymous internet forum didn't like them? pretty weird logic to me. I started listening to them for the first time like a year ago and they are pretty good, especially in their early albums. i think you failed at reading comprehension there pal, it made perfect sense to me
also, linkin park and bands like those were mocked by /b/ in the early days for being "emo", to /b/, "emo" was equivalent to "fake depression for attention"
anyway, enough of the history lesson, run along you little scamp

Shit, I didnt't believe it at first but they actually fucking did it.
I feel old now, doubly so when looking at my favorite bands and how old they are.
Also, the 90s and 2000s music is the most recent good one. I can't remember any music from the last 10 years that would be remotely interesting to me and I'm only 30, it's all shit now.

Being young is better than being old. it always was, it always will.
but they sell it HARD to zoomers. when I was young I never thought about it, people older than me were living their lives and unless they were preaching me about something, I did not care.
but "young is better" shilled hard on zoomers, and internet making boomers and zoomers share same spaces created this mind.
anything before a zoomers birth is instacringe, boring, lame etc. and if you say something, OK boomer.
I'm really curious to see this generation aging.

I still like the way all my favorite bands from teenage years sound. Skillet, Disturbed, Dope, even like one song each from Evanescence and Linkin Park. The real reason I'm embarassed to admit even to myself that I liked listening to them is now I can properly understand the lyrics of these bands and they're utterly cringeworthy angsty shit that makes me tie my entire soul into a knot when I hear them.
Gave me newfound appreciation for Powerwolf because all of their songs are straight up nothing but fancy sounding gibberish that I don't have to think about the meaning of.

How old is the oldest Gen Z? Because some would say I fit that but I turn 30 next year. I'm sure when people say zoomers they refer to 20-ish and younger. Reminds me of how when people used to say "ok boomer" there would be idiots going "uhm actually I'm fasdfa gen", not getting the point of that meme. Or in other words, it's like when that karen meme got popular, would be stupid if women would go "but my name is not Karen, I don't get it?".

I'm actually re-listening to their early albums right now because of this thread.

It's been 20 years since I last listened to most of them.

Honestly by taking into account this came from literal fucking 2000 the lyrics are extremely whiny in retrospect

>I live in the 90s perfect society and have a stable job with no geopolitical tensions and a bright future but I'm so bored..... CRAWLING IN MY SKIIIIN!!!!
>My suburb is incredibly high-trust white people before the meth/fentanyl addiction hit white areas, a bachelors degree is a guarantee top 20% income job from crib to grave.... THESE WOUNDS THEY WILL NOT HEAAAAL
>Dating is still normal and you can just hang out with your local friend groups because social media doesn't exist and meet normal women through social circles, the biggest slut you ever meet has fucked 6 dudes in all her life... IN THE EEEEND IT DOESN'T EVEN MAAAATTUUUHUUUUUR!

I was quoting Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory:
>Hybrid Theory is the debut studio album by American rock band Linkin Park, released on October 24, 2000

The entire point is that it came out before 9/11 yet they are extremely whiny, not knowing they existed at the literal peak of human existence. Not only that, they were white men in the best part of America which was the best part of the world in history before 9/11.

I just can't the lyrics serious with that as context.

The 2000s is basically the end of the golden optimistic era, anon. After that came 9/11, economic depression and other retarded shit. You're right in so far as to say nothing got close as bad as the 2010s were. But people can feel that kind of thing in the air before they enter in full force (read about the concept of zeitgeist). And there's also individual factors, Chester came from an abusive household.

I'm a millennial. I lived through these times. 9/11 was an instant and immediate vibe change. It's disingenuous to imply you could feel it in 2000 already. The economy only got fucked in late 2007 but yeah the atmosphere was already down the drain by then.

Still them being whining fuckwads in 2000 makes me kind of angry in retrospect. It's like seeing one of those billionaires whine about how sad their lives are and the "struggles" they are facing. Tone deaf.

I know they couldn't have known that back then but it's still a whiplash when listening to the album.

Fight Club has a similar feeling of whiplash when watched in 2025.

NTA but we literally thought history ended. As in there will never be wars anymore. America and liberal democracy + capitalism won. The world will never have conflicts anymore. The global economy will evolve and all countries will slowly become liberal democracies until we become a space faring utopia.

That is literally what everyone thought and what was basically told to us in schools.

Then when 9/11 happened it showed us "oh wait we might still have wars and shit, even if it's only terrorists".

Right now the illusion is completely shattered and we realize we will have WW3, most likely have more nuclear detonations and it's clear that capitalism has failed in the west. While democracy might also collapse and go away entirely.

This doesn't even take into account AI and people losing their jobs and livelihood with no signs of any of the proceeds being distributed to anyone.

Like I said is a combination of factors. Individual and personal history + vibe change no long after + zeitgeist (the spirit of the times) being already in the air. I'm a zoomer so I never got to experience first hand the 90s, but I'm always kinda moved by how optimistic most anime/music/television of the time is. Linkin Park was the exception rather than the rule and nu-metal only set in after the 2000s.

it's the same conditions that gave rise to heavy metal in the 60s. everyone was talking about unity and hippie shit and flower power and optimism and people living in really rough lower class areas had no clue what the fuck these middle/upper class kids were talking about. that's the attitude that birthed Black Sabbath. stuff like Korn and Linkin Park are the answer to Britney Spears and Nsync. just because some people have it good doesn't mean everyone does.

No one straight up hated Hybrid Theory for its music, that shit sold platinum.
It just became fun to rag on it for the suicidal lyric composition because it was the early 2000s and kids were starting to hate the emo subculture that was slowly starting to form.

Hybrid Theory was my first album I possessed, I literally remember 2 weeks of every kid loving it and then hating it over fickle kid shit, probably in the same vain of hating basically anything that was popular.

The thing you have to understand about the TikTok generation is that, by and large, they absolutely do not care about anything outside of their own preexisting purview and what is advertised to them, because they seemingly have no innate sense of curiosity for/interest in anything created before they were born. Even if they did, most of them lack the knowledge necessary to seek out and find that media. The only times they do end up "discovering" the classics is when it starts to trend on their social media platform of choice, either due to dumb algorithmic luck or because it got used in some sort of advertisement, as in your example. They only take exactly what is fed to them at nearly every waking moment of their lives.

the "crawling in my skin" line referes to Chester's rough childhood when he was abused and raped by his own family member. most of the songs are about his life and the tragic pathological events that a lot of people in the world are forced to experience and live with for the rest of their lives. its not that hard to figure out. people like you only pay attention to the aesthetic and tone instead of thinking about what the songs are actually about which is kind of embarrassing considering that (again) the lyrics are not exactly subtle or hard to figure out

The culture of the early 00s felt like the last gasp of sincerity, a last hurrah against nihilism, which was the core of so much gen X media. We see music from that era as "cringe" largely because it's genuine. It yearns for something more.

I legitimately think sincerity and "cringe" are synonymous with each other and it also annoys me how both are to avoided or shunned.

But if anything I think "based" is a counter reaction to that. Think about it. "based" is about being sincere and just doing your own thing no matter how you are perceived. It's a bit about rebelling and it also has a feeling of disingenuousness.

But I still think "based" is the start of people taking back their sincerity and stop being behind 10 layers of irony and emotional detachment from everything.

Remember the fucking annoying "ironic weeb" phase 4chan went through 10 years ago. That was the worst of it and it peaked back then. I feel like we're on a slow trajectory back to sincerity again.

Is millenial nostalgia really the superior nostalgia? I've started going back to late 90s/early 00s favorites I never touched like Thief and Deus Ex, assuming I'm going to get filtered by jank and clunkiness, but my reaction is usually "wow, this really is good as they said." Meanwhile, zoomer nostalgia is like "Call of Duty but there is no nicki minaj or lootboxes" while boomer nostalgia is movies that become unwatchable once you see the zog propaganda sprinkled throughout designed to push you toward our current hellscape.

I think millennial nostalgia just has a high coincidence of having media genuinely peak at that time. I also recently went back and played classics I've never played before like Planescape: Torment, Ocarina of Time and even fucking Gex on the PS1. And all of these games would legitimately win game of the year nowadays if they released without any enhancements today. It's fucking bizarre how high quality those games were compared to even game of the year winners nowadays.

Similar for books, movies and music. I have no idea what caused this but it's universally true. And it's not like I have personal attachment to stuff I never experienced from that time.

You do understand that the foremost popular pushers of that lifestyle were the Beatles who were all fucking skid row, bottom of the barrel, dirt poor, beat by their dads, smoking cigarettes at 9 Liverpool kids right? Their manager dictating that they dress like boyish hollywood stars as a publicity stunt and stop cursing out their audience and getting wasted on stage in between songs like they were doing at the start of their career doesn't change that.

Rap is dying because Kanye changing the format to production heavy, pop formatted verse/chorus bullshit destroyed the talent in the industry. When someone actually talented like Kendrick comes along he wants to do weird shit like Institutionalized that you can't blast at a college party every popular rapper fucking riots because they don't have the ability to do that and so continue on the pop rap path and slowly die because they can't do pop as well as real, actual pop can.

If Putin had been rational and just left politics and medvedev didn't chimp out in Georgia in 2008 Russia could have been a first world developed country by now, similar to Germany and eventually could have dominated the EU if they joined it.

Instead all that opportunity was squandered. I remember thinking Russia was cool back in 2008 as well. Then in the 2010s it was considered "Nigeria but white" and now in the 2020s it's literally considered a clownshow North Korea 2.0. No one takes it seriously anymore and it's considered weak.

Nah shit still was hated then and now. For example nobody liked mumble rap when it came out and still no one does despite the music industry just going through SoundCloud rappers a day like condoms.

Your example is a bad one because boy bands were always the ass end of jokes about pre teen girls getting wet for them. Its actually the opposite because they dont get made fun of mainstream anymore. The fact nobody made fun of or pointed out how fucking cringe it is that a Kpop boy band was asked to perform for the fucking UN when that shit would have been a SNL skit in the 90s.

Kanye is probably the best example of something being hated with time instead of nostalgiafagging

Exactly. Early rap had raw energy, storytelling, and actual flow. You could feel the grime off the streets when Nas or Mobb Deep spit. Now itโ€™s just zoomers mumbling about pills over AI-generated beats with all the soul of a corporate ad jingle. Genre's not dead because of evolution-itโ€™s dead because it got lobotomized and monetized into irrelevance.
