There was something so pretentious about it, too. >>714182547Who the fuck knows. It's just so exhausting trying to ever discuss a game I actually like in this shithole. I don't want to go to /vg/ because it's an echochamber and circlejerk, but fuck me it is almost impossible to talk about a recently released game on here without the thread being derailed by bad-faith actors in mere minutes.
Tourists. It's like BG3, casuals pretend that the genre has been dead and dusted for 10+ years because they haven't paid attention to any innovations made the last decade. It's the epitome of an average game, with graphics that look like a cheap Korean MMO that will be taken offline within 2 years of launch.
To bring it back to BG3, remember that normies couldn't figure out that it was in development for 5+ years, and thought it was just put together in 4 months or some shit.
I've got nothing against people who like the game, I just wish they'd recognize that there has been innovation in the genre every year and that this wasn't some small 5 man team that put this together (and credit to the devs for speaking up that it wasn't the case).

>>714182803>He intentionally let Gustave dieAnd he admits that he did that because he figured Gustave would keep Maelle against him. Moreover, Verso deciding to do something only because of what he observes and in response to Renoir taking action is, by definition, reactive.
>He manipulates them into killing themselves! He didn't get the letter until after they already killed the Paintress, so you're assigning intentionality to something that had none. All he did was not tell them it was going to happen, which is, again, a reactive and selfish move.
>Most of the story happened because he manipulated it to happenNo. The story happens because Real Child Verso makes the painting and then Renoir is unreasonable about it. Without Renoir trying to delete the painting, there is no Gommage, there is no Expedition, there is no game. Try again.

So that The Curator can craft a new weapon for you
So that you can get beyond the veil (although apparently the one MUSCLE expedition made it through without this)
So that you can defeat the Paintress.
Given the barrier exists without Verso, the team would have had to find a way through it anyway and, with Esquie, Monoco, and other various characters there, it's not as though Verso necessarily has to be the one to suggest going after the Axons. This isn't a point in his favor for being a decisive character, it's just him providing exposition that the world would otherwise be able to give anyway.
But, no, tell me why you think the Expedition fight the Axons, please, I'm interested in what the real reason is.

>>714184659Anon the Expedition only meets Monoco because of Verso, and Esquie is a big blumbering dummy who wasn't going to tell them SHIT about the Axons. Verso is also the only reason they didn't get merked a gazillion times leading up to that anyway.
>>714179120Monoco its interesting, it depends on how you have his skills and pictos set up. He can be a very strong buff support, strong debuff support, or cover gaps in things you would want. The skill that gives him a free turn in agile mode does wonders for his AP. There are also weapons that start his wheel in a certain way or make it easier to adjust too
>Maelle's gameplan is too simple too, I wish there was a reason to use her other stances instead of the 200% damage one.You can build her as a face tanking AP battery which is fun. That said offensive stance is just filler and serves no practical purpose. Not sure what the Lune bug is.
Sciel is fun because of how much you can stack things. In harder fights if you fuck up by the time you hit twilight it is a lot of setup for nothing, so there can be inherent risk to it.

Anyway, it's developed advances in the timeline systems as proposed by games like Grandia or FFX--the resulting Timeline system for SaGa Scarlet Grace and Emerald Beyond qualifies as equal to or even more of an innovation than Clair Obscur's mix of real time input and turn based interaction.
To get into the weeds of that system specifically, knocking any participant from the timeline will cause it to collapse--if characters on either side of this collapse are on the same team, they'll perform a Unite Attack. As with all the mechanics in both games, enemies can do this as well, which pushes a level of timeline management that is absolutely necessary for success given all encounters scale with the party. Moreover, there are several attacks that provide some level of timeline manipulation by either moving the user or target forward or back, which creates a battle system that isn't just a DPS race of using the hardest hitting attacks because now you have a vast slew of tools worth actually employing. Both games commit to never giving the player more access to healing than enemies can deal, meaning that you can never out-sustain a fight. This further pushes engagement with the timeline system, as getting those juicy combo / unite attacks while disrupting, countering, or otherwise defeating attackers before they get their turns is your primary mode of mitigating damage taken. Emerald Beyond builds on this significantly with a number of abilities that allow for further teambuilding and timeline manipulation, such as attacks that specifically insert into the timeline at different triggers (such as an ally or enemy attack) or moves that will hit everyone on a specific side of the timeline. A boss might prepare an attack that hits everything to its right, rewarding a team setup that can delay the boss.

>>714185960>Maelle definitely kills herself in Versos ending later on.I can't believe I'm using the meme expression but this is a severe case of lack of media literacy. >>714185960Maelle's ending isnt all sugar and rainbows, mostly because she is out here making completely fake and gay copies of characters, even Sciel is a bit disappointed in her fake and gay husband after she has finally gotten over him. >>714151979 (OP)Only 1? Maybe it's a good number for an indie game.
>>714184557You are right that Emerald Beyond and Scarlet Grace look like aggressive cheap anime phone games. The SaGa team typically aren't given budget for shit. They're not out here making the big cinematic fuckoff Final Fantasy games, they're making real JRPGs for real RPG fans.
As for other innovations, though, both those games (and to a lesser extent, the remake of Romancing SaGa 2) push status effects and ailments as deeply significant in a way that most other RPGs are always hesitant to. By having a system that's wholly consistent across the board and for bosses as well, you know that if you fight a Humanoid boss it'll have the same weaknesses and resistances a Humanoid generic enemy will have. This means you can actually prepare and build strategies. Expecting a boss fight with a big Plant Boss? Well you know Plants take extra from Fire and that you can poison them, too, so these are viable. Moreover, by making Poison, Stun, Paralysis, Sleep, and even Instant Death actually reliable statuses you can inflict even on bosses, it widens the net for teams worth building and abilities worth having. As I mentioned in the other post, the SaGa franchise has been really innovating and pushing on creating an RPG where combat design isn't just 'use your best attack and be functionally invincible because you can heal more damage than the enemy deals'.
I'll also pitch that both Emerald Beyond and Scarlet Grace are exercises in RPG minimalism--they cut out the big overwrought dungeons and focus primarily on story and encounters in a way that only games like Front Mission or Final Fantasy Tactics did before. Both games seek to trim as much fluff and fat from the genre while delivering a consistently engaging experience.
>>714153002It's just stance break test

Verso also doesn't try to talk them out of it, either, what the fuck are (you) on? He simply expresses that it's nearly impossible and that he tried before. The second Lune says they're still going to do it, Verso capitulates and immediately gives up the two locations as well as which is weaker and better to take on first. Looking back on it, too, it's Lune that brings up the Expedition 58 Journal, so they didn't need Verso at all to tell them about the Axons at all. Again, situated in the original context of this conversation, it's just further presentation as Verso reactively responding to the party rather than being active in driving the plot forward.

>>714187379>b-b-but it doesn't count and also they aren't real people and also uhhh you like trannies and anime and are just MADanon, you're embarrassing yourself. Why are you bending over backwards to defend this French game?
>>714188723It's almost like Verso is a complex character with depth and flaws who unknowingly makes the wrong decision many times over the course of the story. If he'd saved Gustave rather than let him die that ironically may have actually given Verso the outcome he wanted all along, because Gustave was the one person who might have actually been able to convince Maelle to leave the canvas once the cat came out of the bag about the nature of the painting and what would happen to her if she stayed inside it for too long
>>714188204>Nintendo dedicated youtubers are some of the saddest people there areThey seem to live in some weird parallel dimension. Recently saw a video about how the Gamecube 'shaped a generation'.
>>714188895>what is there to say that she cant do that within her own painting?I think that's why they added the "piece of real Verso's soul stuck in the canvas" thing in. Now she's desperately holding on to the last bit of her brother's soul and there's no easy "everyone lives" ending.
>>714152081Well this is spooky
>>714189226>the Gamecube 'shaped a generation'.I mean that's sort of true in a microcosmic sense, it created Smashstinkies
>>714188895She's not as good a painter as Verso. It's implied she couldn't create a whole world like that without getting better. The point is that she did get born and live 16 years in Verso's world, so for her that's as much the legitimate world as the one outside the painting. Were she to try to make a new one, herself, it'd probably feel too much like facsimile and fall short.
>>714189336She brought Lune and Sciele back exactly as they were, painted Verso is close enough to real Verso that he's able to help teach her how to paint people correctly
>>714151979 (OP)>All these complaints about hte gameplay>The lead director is a DMChadHonestly I wouldn't mind it if their next game was an action game, I think it'd be sick to watch them save the action genre by making something that ISN'T rollslop
>>714189104It's a good thing I'm not arguing on whether the character is nuanced or not, just that he's not the proactive mensch that one anon misinterpreted him as.
>>714189461Yes, but that's because she has their chroma to bring them back as they were. It's like having all the right paints on your pallet to follow along to a Bob Ross video.
>>714185981Why are you so angry? I have the right to say that a game is so good, it outweighs the drawbacks of belonging to a genre I'm quite sure I don't enjoy.
>Maybe on advanced grammar of a language you don't speak? My statements was grammatically correct and even if it wasn't, that hyperbole does you no favours
>>714188723>Verso didn't 'get Gustave killed'. Renoir was already going to do that shitThe whole point to the final event with Maelle was Verso debating on admitting to Maelle specifically on whether to lie to her or not about how he felt about Gustave, who he did believe would jeopardize his own goals
>>714189104Yeah I believe the real Gustave we follow throughout the game would convince Maelle to leave, knowing her fate, since its been shown through the short time we had with him that he cares about her basically more than anything else.
>>714189336>She's not as good a painter as Verso. It's implied she couldn't create a whole world like that without getting better.Initially yeah, but a big point of her growth and her evolution inside the canvas itself was showing that she could in fact start making her own worlds, which is why Verso said that to her before he fully disappeared to begin with. In her ending she was pretty much able to replicate and repair a lot of what had gone wrong including an entire city of people
>>714170687>it's bad because it's not Japaneselmao you weebs always make me LAUGH
>>714189469Making the wrong decisions is proactive by definition, anon
>>714186384>and the precedent of Aline,Renoir says all painters have bouts like Aline. He was also trapped inside a canvas just like Alicia and Aline. Maelle ending is basically letting her work shit out on her own and eventually she'll either snap out of it and leave the canvas voluntarily (with all the gang alive except Verso who can be allowed to die) or will be dragged out by Clea, Renoir or Aline if she can unfuck herself. Picking Verso ending just means you treat her like a stupid kid who doesn't know better and removing any chance of a happy ending, when the exact same effect can be achieved later on by Alicia's family if she/Maelle starts going nutty inside the canvas
>>714189464>buckbreak other turn based RPGs>proceed to buckbreak action RPGs
I can't beat him; It's actually impossible. I've beaten every other powerful boss, but I'm throwing in the towel. I can get through the first phase easily enough. But he wipes my entire team before I can even get him down to 3/4 health in the second phase.
>>714189850Dude Maelle ending is literally selfish suicide at the expense of literally everyone else and eventually, herself. You're a naive child who got mad when your parents wouldn't let you have ice cream for breakfast.
>>714190134Just watch a video of his attacks if you don't want to cheese him
Why are you so angry? I have the right to say that a game is so good, it outweighs the drawbacks of belonging to a genre I'm quite sure I don't enjoy.
>Maybe on advanced grammar of a language you don't speak?
My statement was grammatically correct and even if it wasn't, that hyperbole does you no favours
>>714151979 (OP)its baby's first JRPG outside some final fantasy and persona.
take turn based combat, make it more paletablle and boom you have an instant hit the retards swoon over
>>714190375>It's baby's first JRPG aside from these numerous other gamesIt's like you don't even understand what you're typing.
>>714189850Picking the Maelle ending doesnt incentivize her to leave or move on. Part of her arc, and Sciel's arc both involve accepting the losses of those they have loved, and Maelle bringing both Gustave and Pierre back simply interferes with the process. With Verso's simulacrum around playing piano, who is to say she will even move on, because it would be hard to let go of this Verso. Going in and forcing her out is a lot more of the equivalent of treating her like a stupid kid who doesnt understand the gravity of her situation, and it ultimately makes the healing process for the family as a whole worse, because this fragment of Verso is still present and around, and still serves as a consistent reminder
>>714190375>its baby's firstPeople keep trying to go for this line, but everywhere I'm looking I see oldfags gushing about how they haven't enjoyed a story based game like this since their youth.
>>714190134Put difficulty in journalist mode or use one of the couple of minmax builds to do 5M damage with Stendhal on your fist turn.
>>714189850Forcing her out is like forcing an addict to go cold turkey whether they like it or not. They'll probably appreciate it later. Letting her stay is just giving her more drugs and hoping she just magically stops being addicted one day.
>>714190489>Part of her arcI think you are too writers 101 pilled to properly think about the story. For Maelle the decision is to live with her family in agony or live with her other family and have a good life.
There is also wiping out a whole nation of sentient beings on there which is another point that people who think that a story has to be about a singular thing like to glance over.
>>714185981Why are you so angry? I have the right to say that a game is so good, it outweighs the drawbacks of belonging to a genre I'm quite sure I don't enjoy.
>Maybe on advanced grammar of a language you don't speak? My statement was grammatically correct and even if it wasn't, that hyperbole does you no favours
>>714190613>They'll probably appreciate it later.Do you know that when you are burned up like that your skin constantly tears and rips open when you move around to the point where you just sit there and wither away because you are scared of hurting yourself?
Do you know that she can't breathe without being in pain? That she can't talk and is half blind? That her family blames her for the death of their beloved son and that she just lost a 2nd group of people she spent 16 years with to the paintocaust?
Alicia is going to kill herself.
>>714186453>Redline has a past reason behind its existence >Hints through the decades the real world sunk long ago(confirmed now)>Clam Belt has reason for existing >Grand Line has a reason for existingWhat's your point?
>>714190154>>714190489>pick Verso >Maelle is forced out >canvasgang all dead>Maelle may or may not be better irl>pick Maelle>she may or may not get better on her own, inside the canvas>if she does it's a good ending, Maelle leaves the canvas, canvasgang all alive >if she doesn't Renoir, Clea or even Alicia can enter the canvas and force her out>Maelle is forced out>chance for canvasgang to stay alive since all three are more powerful painters and wouldn't have to take out the canvas itself to get Maelle out>Maelle may or may not be better irl
>>714190473>aside from numerous other games that are also baby's first JRPGwow i sure wonder why they're all being compared.
>>714190548because it takes the basic JRPG formula/ common tropes and grinds them down into something more palletable for people who are probably burnt out on the genre.
also happens to please newcomers too
Why did Maelle enter the Canvas to begin with again?
>>714190969>>714191080The game is about accepting loss, pain, and moving on. Maelle ending is just living in a fantasy world forever because she can't cope.
>>714191080The canvas gang has no chance unless you force Verso's tired soul to continue painting. The whole point of showing the soul fragment painting is basically stating that it is the battery that powers the world itself
>>714191190Her sister was using her as a tool to save their parents. It was a risky plan from the beginning
>>714191080>canvasgang all deadVerso's friends knew his plan from the beginning and still helped him do it, even lying to the others. They knew it was for the best and accepted their death/erasure
>>714190969>burn victims have never gone on to live remotely happy livesI wouldn't assume the majority but you can find some feel good success stories of people that looked dead/near death. I have no idea how this works but wouldn't she also heal better since it happened while she's young?
>>714191080The only ones that truly get the raw deal are Sciel and Lune, with the Gestrals and mountain people falling in a weird in between.
Monoco is loyal to Verso knowing full well what will happen, especially knowing that he was given life through Verso so it is only fair that he can finally move on with Esqiue in a similar boat.
>>714191230>living in a fantasy world forever because she can't cope.As Renoir said all painters go through that kind of phase and even if it looked like she'd be stuck inside forever Renoir, Clea can still force her out and destroy the canvas. At worst she wasted some time inside, didn't get better and they're back at square 1. It's game theory and Maelle ending gives you a potential upside with downside being the same outcome as Verso ending.
>>714191439That's the one part that could be an issue. Still assuming a painter can replace the battery that powered the world, Maelle could let Verso die and take over and if she gets better the canvas could continue existing or she could have Clea fix it since she can paint over other people's creations.
If she can't replace Verso's soul fragment she'll either learn to let the canvas die when she's ready to leave or she won't in which case she'll be dragged outside against her wishes and the canvas would be destroyed which is just delayed Verso ending
>>714192218>and even if it looked like she'd be stuck inside forever Renoir, Clea can still force her out and destroy the canvas. That is a lot easier said that done considering the amount of effort it took to take Aline out to begin with
>>714192218>Maelle ending gives you a potential upside with downside being the same outcome as Verso ending. You are ignoring the potential downside of being even more debilitated than she already is when she leaves making it harder to cope with reality, which is why Renoir was especially worried about Aline to begin with
Everything about the game feels intentional and full of passion, the game has a relevant message about /critique of escapism and grief, but not too obvious to the point of being shoved down your throat.
In contrast, most other games feel soulless, like they’re just ticking boxes on some manager’s checklist and their existence isn't justfied beyond that.
Also it's not trying too hard like le kojumbo games.
>>714190759>There is also wiping out a whole nation of sentient beings on there which is another point that people who think that a story has to be about a singular thing like to glance over.I'm shocked this point is often overlooked and barely touched-upon in the game, yet it puts the seemingly "bad" ending in a much better light, though obviously not the way the devs intended
>>714192741I interpreted the point that the sentient beings are already kind of fucked simply because Verso himself is dead. They were thrust into a doomed situation because their creators were taken from him. The other beings were created due to meddling in a work that was not their own
>>714192741The problem is that if the real Maelle falls to pieces then the world goes back to a doomed state. An often glossed over part of the story is that there IS a war going on and that the Dessandre family was in fact targeted. What if another event that leads to tragedy happens again, and they all have to leave their home because its burning again or something along those lines? Maelle will be more than just half burnt, and the canvas itself will also suffer a horrific fate
