Do they? The /vg/ thread died, there's barely any discussion or fanart anywhere.

My impression was like it's a decent FF fanfic that people who are into that enjoy for a week and then forget about.

Its a JRPG for people who like JRPGs conceptually but dropped the genre once the moeifcation of anime made it unpalatable to them.
In other words it filled the nice the FF series used to with fun gameplay, good music, and pretty (non-weeb) graphics and so got that old fanbase to come back.

In other words its a 8/10 that filled a market gap that had been empty since the 2000s

Gameplay is quick and feels rewarding. Dodge till you're comfortable with the moves, then parry. I liked how many little combat bonuses you get, can actually make different playstyles based on your team and picto setups. Nice amount of abilities to unlock. What I saw I didn't care for but playing it I was very surprised how much I liked it. Fun gameplay.

This really stretches the point considering that "indie publishers" like Devolver and Serenity Forge exist. You'd have stuff like Hotline Miami, The Talos Principle, Katana Zero, Shifu, Inscryption, Slay the Princess etc. "not indie" because they have a publisher.
At this point calling something "indie" is a vibes based assesment.

And for COE33 specifically it's a weird case because it was majorly funded by its publisher. For all the quadrillionaire dad CEO nepo project schizoposts, the game (Project W) looked rough before Kepler was involved, they funded full time development for 3 years. But they are a weird indie studio collective thing that supposedly doesn't interfere with development or creative vision.
It isn't "AA" the same way ELEX was under THQ Nordic, but you can't really call it indie either, yet Rematch is a new Kepler game yet you could call it indie, but its studio is owned by Kepler unlike with Sandfall.
Just stop being autistic with labels.

His father, Richard Broche, runs several companies, including MBO+Investments, SCI MAGAR Real Estate, SC BROCHE, and MYRTE INVEST. Guillaume, along with his brothers Alexandre and Adrien, are also associates of MYRTE INVEST, suggesting a family-owned trust or investment vehicle. Additionally, Guillaume's career trajectory, starting with an internship at Ubisoft as an assistant creative director, has been noted as potentially facilitated by family connections.

Some of it is true and I checked it, that he's listed as member in two companies, and a listed address in a non zoo part of Paris, but it isn't that much, in my poorfag east euro country I'm a member in 4 businesses through my relatives. His family is nowhere near rich enough to be notable either, no lists or presence anywhere online.

Guillaume is from the french countryside bourgeoisie. I know this much because I come from the same background.
Could tell as much with the way he dresses.
I checked and he went to a private catholic school, just like I did.
He most likely did some scouting when younger just like me too.

This game gets points just for making Square Enix admit that they were fucking wrong about turn-based.
There was something so pretentious about it, too. You had these fucking suited-up retards and a grown ass man with a Gakt haircut and wardrobe taking over a franchise that's decades old, a cornerstone of single player games, and they throw the entire thing out saying "WE KNOW BETTER! THIS IS WHAT THESE KIDS REALLY WANT!", and they just released slop. for almost 20 years.

The real Final Fantasy 13 was fucking Octopath Traveler, as far as I'm concerned. Having square publicly admit that E33 smacked some sense back into them is great.

There's practically no subplot for any of the cast that aren't members of the super special god family. Sciel doesn't meaningfully exist. Moreover, if you don't think the whole Painter/Writer/Canvas nonsense isn't a mess, you're out of your gourd. A tight story would've just been focused on the expedition without having some big fucking lame meta-narrative that shifts focus onto the most obnoxious characters and robs the world of any of its charm.

I just got Monkey, his revolving wheel mechanic seems kind of fun, however without any knowledge of his skills, I'm pretty sure you'll be blueballed by AP many times as you need to use AP to move the wheel and then AP to cast the empowered skill.
Lune is way too OP with the bug right now, she sets up Elemental Genesis way too easily.
Sciel seems kinda boring, her card thing is a bit too simple to set up/cash out.
Maelle's gameplan is too simple too, I wish there was a reason to use her other stances instead of the 200% damage one.
Feels like Verso will be the strongest character, I can't imagine how powerful an empowered Steeled Strike is.

>no drama
game opens with 'oh no my ex who I wanted to have babies with is getting thanos snapped' and transitions into main character crying and trying to kill himself like a little bitch the second the Expedition he's been hyping his whole life runs into a single lethal snag.
>Plot Hole Free
The whole plot only exists because Renoir insists on his own ultimatum.
>Good presentation of story
The structure of 'go to next place, fight a boss, dump cutscenes/talking' gets tiresome and rote. Killing Gustave may work to make you feel connected to a dead painting person but Verso immediately swinging in to replace him feels cheap, lame, and softened the mechanical blow entirely. Shit's got no balls.
>Solid gameplay
Game trivializes itself by design within five to ten hours of play. Devs took a little too much from FFVIII without learning the lessons that FFX tempered.

You can tell it's the writer's first project, there were some issues with how the story was presented in the later acts where it felt all of Lumiere was denied agency, she should refine her writing for the next game and can do well.
Nothing much to say about the visuals, a lot of the environmental assets were bought which makes sense for a small team, but the creative director had an eye for good environments, they should get more people working on visuals for the next game and tone down the post-processing effects.
The composer needs to have a career in game OSTs immediately. Don't be a clout chasing bitch and chase "prestige" cinema.

I don't want to go to /vg/ because it's an echochamber and circlejerk, but fuck me it is almost impossible to talk about a recently released game on here without the thread being derailed by bad-faith actors in mere minutes.

Tourists. It's like BG3, casuals pretend that the genre has been dead and dusted for 10+ years because they haven't paid attention to any innovations made the last decade. It's the epitome of an average game, with graphics that look like a cheap Korean MMO that will be taken offline within 2 years of launch.
To bring it back to BG3, remember that normies couldn't figure out that it was in development for 5+ years, and thought it was just put together in 4 months or some shit.
I've got nothing against people who like the game, I just wish they'd recognize that there has been innovation in the genre every year and that this wasn't some small 5 man team that put this together (and credit to the devs for speaking up that it wasn't the case).

>He intentionally let Gustave die
And he admits that he did that because he figured Gustave would keep Maelle against him. Moreover, Verso deciding to do something only because of what he observes and in response to Renoir taking action is, by definition, reactive.
>He manipulates them into killing themselves!
He didn't get the letter until after they already killed the Paintress, so you're assigning intentionality to something that had none. All he did was not tell them it was going to happen, which is, again, a reactive and selfish move.
>Most of the story happened because he manipulated it to happen
No. The story happens because Real Child Verso makes the painting and then Renoir is unreasonable about it. Without Renoir trying to delete the painting, there is no Gommage, there is no Expedition, there is no game. Try again.

Oh, man, it's almost as if you can both enjoy elements of a thing and dislike other parts of it and want to experience the whole of it so you can form an informed opinion on the thing. I know, radical, given the board we're on, that someone would actually have a nuanced relationship to a piece of media AND actually care to experience it before shitposting about it.

Its funny because ask these same people "so what does a 10/10 look like" or "so what would a genuine non paid for thread look like from somebody wanting to discuss their game" and they can't answer. My genuine experience with the game was going in thinking "what's this bs people are glazing the fuck out of? I don't care for how the gameplay looks but I'll try it" then I actually had a lot of fun with the gameplay and the game became one of my top 5 easily. That's how it happened but type that out and its nothing but "paid shill paid shill paid shill!"

I am very similar. I saw a few friends playing it who had high praise for it. I bought it a few days after release but only got to play it the last few days because I've been busy with other stuff. Thoroughly enjoyed it, came to discuss it here and debate endings and such and it's literally just people calling each other brown, shills or saying its melodramatic french pretentious bullshit. No one can give an example of a good game, name their favourite games (unironically) or actually provide any counterpoints that deviate from their parroted scripts. It is genuinely mind boggling. I remember a very similar thing happening with Dragon's Dogma 2 leading up to and post launch. Discussion became impossible until no one was playing it anymore. Even BG3 suffered from this, but nowhere near as bad, strangely enough.

>That's not why you fight the Axons
You literally defeat them for their Chroma
So that The Curator can craft a new weapon for you
So that you can get beyond the veil (although apparently the one MUSCLE expedition made it through without this)
So that you can defeat the Paintress.
Given the barrier exists without Verso, the team would have had to find a way through it anyway and, with Esquie, Monoco, and other various characters there, it's not as though Verso necessarily has to be the one to suggest going after the Axons. This isn't a point in his favor for being a decisive character, it's just him providing exposition that the world would otherwise be able to give anyway.
But, no, tell me why you think the Expedition fight the Axons, please, I'm interested in what the real reason is.

Yeah but not a plot hole and Renoirs reasoning is sound.

It's better than most games with cutscenes. The cutscenes are integrated well and it's not relying on them to heavily.

Gameplay isn't a masterpiece but good enough for this kind of game which means it is solid.

Monoco its interesting, it depends on how you have his skills and pictos set up. He can be a very strong buff support, strong debuff support, or cover gaps in things you would want. The skill that gives him a free turn in agile mode does wonders for his AP. There are also weapons that start his wheel in a certain way or make it easier to adjust too

>Maelle's gameplan is too simple too, I wish there was a reason to use her other stances instead of the 200% damage one.
You can build her as a face tanking AP battery which is fun. That said offensive stance is just filler and serves no practical purpose. Not sure what the Lune bug is.

Sciel is fun because of how much you can stack things. In harder fights if you fuck up by the time you hit twilight it is a lot of setup for nothing, so there can be inherent risk to it.

>Niche JRPG franchise
>One of Square's two longest running RPG series, tied with Final fucking Fantasy
I get it, it's still niche, but hoh boy.
Anyway, it's developed advances in the timeline systems as proposed by games like Grandia or FFX--the resulting Timeline system for SaGa Scarlet Grace and Emerald Beyond qualifies as equal to or even more of an innovation than Clair Obscur's mix of real time input and turn based interaction.
To get into the weeds of that system specifically, knocking any participant from the timeline will cause it to collapse--if characters on either side of this collapse are on the same team, they'll perform a Unite Attack. As with all the mechanics in both games, enemies can do this as well, which pushes a level of timeline management that is absolutely necessary for success given all encounters scale with the party. Moreover, there are several attacks that provide some level of timeline manipulation by either moving the user or target forward or back, which creates a battle system that isn't just a DPS race of using the hardest hitting attacks because now you have a vast slew of tools worth actually employing. Both games commit to never giving the player more access to healing than enemies can deal, meaning that you can never out-sustain a fight. This further pushes engagement with the timeline system, as getting those juicy combo / unite attacks while disrupting, countering, or otherwise defeating attackers before they get their turns is your primary mode of mitigating damage taken. Emerald Beyond builds on this significantly with a number of abilities that allow for further teambuilding and timeline manipulation, such as attacks that specifically insert into the timeline at different triggers (such as an ally or enemy attack) or moves that will hit everyone on a specific side of the timeline. A boss might prepare an attack that hits everything to its right, rewarding a team setup that can delay the boss.

I can't believe I'm using the meme expression but this is a severe case of lack of media literacy. It is Maelle's ending that is a suicide. Maelle's ending isnt all sugar and rainbows, mostly because she is out here making completely fake and gay copies of characters, even Sciel is a bit disappointed in her fake and gay husband after she has finally gotten over him. I mostly feel bad for Sciel and Lune no matter what because they dont really deserve being caught in the middle of these families that are consistently making these living worlds only to ignore/destroy them later because they get bored or tired of them or they are dangerous. The writers are right to go to war.

Verso is at least partially responsible for a lot of the shit, so it feels bad supporting him, but I prefer how his ending plays out even though he doesnt deserve that end that he wanted

You are right that Emerald Beyond and Scarlet Grace look like aggressive cheap anime phone games. The SaGa team typically aren't given budget for shit. They're not out here making the big cinematic fuckoff Final Fantasy games, they're making real JRPGs for real RPG fans.
As for other innovations, though, both those games (and to a lesser extent, the remake of Romancing SaGa 2) push status effects and ailments as deeply significant in a way that most other RPGs are always hesitant to. By having a system that's wholly consistent across the board and for bosses as well, you know that if you fight a Humanoid boss it'll have the same weaknesses and resistances a Humanoid generic enemy will have. This means you can actually prepare and build strategies. Expecting a boss fight with a big Plant Boss? Well you know Plants take extra from Fire and that you can poison them, too, so these are viable. Moreover, by making Poison, Stun, Paralysis, Sleep, and even Instant Death actually reliable statuses you can inflict even on bosses, it widens the net for teams worth building and abilities worth having. As I mentioned in the other post, the SaGa franchise has been really innovating and pushing on creating an RPG where combat design isn't just 'use your best attack and be functionally invincible because you can heal more damage than the enemy deals'.
I'll also pitch that both Emerald Beyond and Scarlet Grace are exercises in RPG minimalism--they cut out the big overwrought dungeons and focus primarily on story and encounters in a way that only games like Front Mission or Final Fantasy Tactics did before. Both games seek to trim as much fluff and fat from the genre while delivering a consistently engaging experience.

>even Sciel is a bit disappointed in her fake and gay husband
That's 100% something you made up and that goes against everything you saw in the game. Sciel is herself, her husband is himself.
People can be turned into chroma, that chroma can be turned back into people. You know that it works because you saw it happen in the game.

I agree with you that they can be brought back, I just agreed that he's not killing them again in the end, he already killed everyone with the help of Renoir. And people think they're the good guys, blows my mind. Clea is has psychopathic vibes, taunts her sister about how she caused her brothers death, creates that monster Clea in the canvas, creates a monster in the canvas as a child that terrorizes Verso for fun...

Maelle did die because she wasn’t real. Lune and Ciel aren’t real so Maelle was. able to capture their chroma before it was too late to remake them.
All of this served a a narrative purpose without being asspulls. You’re just a seething nigger mad that your tranime slop couldn’t pull this off without scaring the hoes.

I dont think she does anything wrong necessarily, but I also think recreating the ones that fallen naturally prior to the mass gomage after they fucked up and killed the paintress is very unhealthy for everyone involved in the canvas. Its debatable on the logistics or reality of the others she brought back afterward as well, but I can more or less write it off thanks to Sciel and Lune, it is more the ones outside of that event im a lot more skeptical of. I think I would have accepted that ending a lot more.
>>714186879
Who is to say that the chroma for Sciel's Husband, who she didnt know well, was even reconstructed correctly? Unless Chroma itself as a consciousness of its own. Even the gestral rebirth sidequest goes over how Noco, while having a lot of the same traits and properties, is still different from the one that had died, and Monoco expresses that Noco goes from his old mentor, to someone he now takes care of.

I think both endings are great, and I enjoy the fact that I can even discuss the more ambiguous aspects.

I've beaten the game, you're just stuck on arguing semantics like the other fags in the thread while also losing scope of the original context of this whole back and forth, which is that someone thought Verso was such a cool proactive protagonist that takes shit into his own hands. Verso also doesn't try to talk them out of it, either, what the fuck are (you) on? He simply expresses that it's nearly impossible and that he tried before. The second Lune says they're still going to do it, Verso capitulates and immediately gives up the two locations as well as which is weaker and better to take on first. Looking back on it, too, it's Lune that brings up the Expedition 58 Journal, so they didn't need Verso at all to tell them about the Axons at all. Again, situated in the original context of this conversation, it's just further presentation as Verso reactively responding to the party rather than being active in driving the plot forward.
And I'll be clear here; I don't think that being reactive makes a character worse or the writing bad--I just think that one anon is wrong and should get Verso's cock out of their holes.

It's almost like Verso is a complex character with depth and flaws who unknowingly makes the wrong decision many times over the course of the story. If he'd saved Gustave rather than let him die that ironically may have actually given Verso the outcome he wanted all along, because Gustave was the one person who might have actually been able to convince Maelle to leave the canvas once the cat came out of the bag about the nature of the painting and what would happen to her if she stayed inside it for too long

She's not as good a painter as Verso. It's implied she couldn't create a whole world like that without getting better. The point is that she did get born and live 16 years in Verso's world, so for her that's as much the legitimate world as the one outside the painting. Were she to try to make a new one, herself, it'd probably feel too much like facsimile and fall short.

>She's not as good a painter as Verso. It's implied she couldn't create a whole world like that without getting better.
Initially yeah, but a big point of her growth and her evolution inside the canvas itself was showing that she could in fact start making her own worlds, which is why Verso said that to her before he fully disappeared to begin with. In her ending she was pretty much able to replicate and repair a lot of what had gone wrong including an entire city of people

Renoir says all painters have bouts like Aline. He was also trapped inside a canvas just like Alicia and Aline. Maelle ending is basically letting her work shit out on her own and eventually she'll either snap out of it and leave the canvas voluntarily (with all the gang alive except Verso who can be allowed to die) or will be dragged out by Clea, Renoir or Aline if she can unfuck herself. Picking Verso ending just means you treat her like a stupid kid who doesn't know better and removing any chance of a happy ending, when the exact same effect can be achieved later on by Alicia's family if she/Maelle starts going nutty inside the canvas

Picking the Maelle ending doesnt incentivize her to leave or move on. Part of her arc, and Sciel's arc both involve accepting the losses of those they have loved, and Maelle bringing both Gustave and Pierre back simply interferes with the process. With Verso's simulacrum around playing piano, who is to say she will even move on, because it would be hard to let go of this Verso. Going in and forcing her out is a lot more of the equivalent of treating her like a stupid kid who doesnt understand the gravity of her situation, and it ultimately makes the healing process for the family as a whole worse, because this fragment of Verso is still present and around, and still serves as a consistent reminder

Alicia is going to kill herself.

>Hints through the decades the real world sunk long ago(confirmed now)
>Clam Belt has reason for existing
>Grand Line has a reason for existing
What's your point?

>pick Verso
>Maelle is forced out
>canvasgang all dead
>Maelle may or may not be better irl

>pick Maelle
>she may or may not get better on her own, inside the canvas
>if she does it's a good ending, Maelle leaves the canvas, canvasgang all alive
>if she doesn't Renoir, Clea or even Alicia can enter the canvas and force her out
>Maelle is forced out
>chance for canvasgang to stay alive since all three are more powerful painters and wouldn't have to take out the canvas itself to get Maelle out
>Maelle may or may not be better irl

wow i sure wonder why they're all being compared.
>>714190548
because it takes the basic JRPG formula/ common tropes and grinds them down into something more palletable for people who are probably burnt out on the genre.
also happens to please newcomers too

The game is about accepting loss, pain, and moving on. Maelle ending is just living in a fantasy world forever because she can't cope.

The canvas gang has no chance unless you force Verso's tired soul to continue painting. The whole point of showing the soul fragment painting is basically stating that it is the battery that powers the world itself

Verso's friends knew his plan from the beginning and still helped him do it, even lying to the others. They knew it was for the best and accepted their death/erasure

>burn victims have never gone on to live remotely happy lives
I wouldn't assume the majority but you can find some feel good success stories of people that looked dead/near death. I have no idea how this works but wouldn't she also heal better since it happened while she's young?

The only ones that truly get the raw deal are Sciel and Lune, with the Gestrals and mountain people falling in a weird in between.

Monoco is loyal to Verso knowing full well what will happen, especially knowing that he was given life through Verso so it is only fair that he can finally move on with Esqiue in a similar boat.

As Renoir said all painters go through that kind of phase and even if it looked like she'd be stuck inside forever Renoir, Clea can still force her out and destroy the canvas. At worst she wasted some time inside, didn't get better and they're back at square 1. It's game theory and Maelle ending gives you a potential upside with downside being the same outcome as Verso ending.

>>714191439
That's the one part that could be an issue. Still assuming a painter can replace the battery that powered the world, Maelle could let Verso die and take over and if she gets better the canvas could continue existing or she could have Clea fix it since she can paint over other people's creations.

If she can't replace Verso's soul fragment she'll either learn to let the canvas die when she's ready to leave or she won't in which case she'll be dragged outside against her wishes and the canvas would be destroyed which is just delayed Verso ending

That is a lot easier said that done considering the amount of effort it took to take Aline out to begin with

You are ignoring the potential downside of being even more debilitated than she already is when she leaves making it harder to cope with reality, which is why Renoir was especially worried about Aline to begin with

Everything about the game feels intentional and full of passion, the game has a relevant message about /critique of escapism and grief, but not too obvious to the point of being shoved down your throat.

In contrast, most other games feel soulless, like they’re just ticking boxes on some manager’s checklist and their existence isn't justfied beyond that.

Also it's not trying too hard like le kojumbo games.

>There is also wiping out a whole nation of sentient beings on there which is another point that people who think that a story has to be about a singular thing like to glance over.

I'm shocked this point is often overlooked and barely touched-upon in the game, yet it puts the seemingly "bad" ending in a much better light, though obviously not the way the devs intended

I interpreted the point that the sentient beings are already kind of fucked simply because Verso himself is dead. They were thrust into a doomed situation because their creators were taken from him. The other beings were created due to meddling in a work that was not their own

The problem is that if the real Maelle falls to pieces then the world goes back to a doomed state. An often glossed over part of the story is that there IS a war going on and that the Dessandre family was in fact targeted. What if another event that leads to tragedy happens again, and they all have to leave their home because its burning again or something along those lines? Maelle will be more than just half burnt, and the canvas itself will also suffer a horrific fate
