The EU's idea behind digital age verification and similar claims verification, is actually - surprisingly - well-informed and really, really GOOD.

It's a double-blind system based on industry standard cryptographic solutions from OAuth and OpenID.

To explain this in a simple way:
when some party needs you to prove a claim, like whether you are of legal age, you use the app in question to sign into your government's e-ID systems and request a cryptographically signed token for that claim. Neither the EU nor your government know what you're requesting that token for. And the token has no identifying marks that tie it back to your real-world identity.

The app then passes that token on to the party that needs the claim verified. They can verify the veracity of that claim locally, without sending it back to the EU, by checking the digital signature. Neither the EU nor your government knows which party or parties you hand those claim tokens to. And those parties never become privy to your identity. The most they learn is from which country you are, since iirc they need that to know which signature data to verify the token claim with.

The only thing they will ever know is that user XYZ123, whoever that may truly be, either is or is not of legal age.

This is in theory the best way to do this, if necessary. However it does require that all parts of the system are made correctly, isolated, and don't "leak" info or have any confounding variables that would allow someone to, with multiple pieces, trace who's doing what. Much like how gov't can even put resources to identifying people going through TOR thanks to a sort of parallel construction by knowning certain data points, its a significant bar here to ensure nobody can find out that actually ID X was likely used to generate token Y which was then used for access to site Z etc. The EU is probably the institution I'd think who has the best chance of getting this correct and keeping it open source and spec, but of course the technical aspects as important as they are, isn't the only part of the discussion; the question is should it be necessary at all?
