I know he's a stuffed animal, but he's a Darkner and they usually have detailed body parts like that even if their light world equivalent doesn't. These recent chapters associate Friend pretty hard with cats and it being eyes and a smile that can disappear and reappear wherever makes them seem like the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. Seam is also a purple cat, missing his eyes and teeth.

Seam also collects the shadow crystals and seems to know who has them. He also says the Shadow Mantle is his but doesn't know who took it. This disembodied face is probably something like his stuffing, the "friend inside him."

I don't know how it all fits together. I don't know if they're two separate entities or if he's in control. I don't know who they're working with. I don't know what their end goal is. I'd have to sit down and write everything out and see how it all fits together.
