My biggest problem with ZZZ is how hyper simple all the potentially neat mechanics were.
TV mode could have been really neat if there was some optional endgame content that challenged the player and made it meaningful. I think gacha games always need to be lowest common denominator slop but side quests like that RPG one or the Pokemon one showed that there was a lot of potential. The same is true for the currently running Mecha event which was fun but really really easy.
If there was a Shiyu Defense style weekly/monthly challenge that was more about strategy or minigame content it would be really cool.

I do get the logic that the game was originally going for, TV mode offered break from action, and then combat happened in the small contained arenas.
But when people hated it so much, game was in limbo for half an year with devs desperately trying to turn those arena sections into explorable stages. PS2-era Devil May Cry and God of War are not exactly known for their exploration, but their stages are still insanely more fun to go through than what ZZZ had starting with 1.3 (was that the Calydon chapter? I forgot).
That awkward period definitely did not help the game at all.

The story is a problem, it just doesn't manage to hook me in the same way that Star Rail or Blue Archive succeeded.
But I also think the problem is in presentation. Outside the voiced scenes, the presentation is just incredibly simple. Characters are not animated at all, they do not shake their head, turn to look at whoever they are speaking with... When new character enters the scene, screen goes black and they just teleport in, nobody walks.
It's just really hard to connect with the story when it feels like even devs don't care about making most parts of it look good.

There's the battle tower and optional objectives in hollow zero but you don't get any substantial rewards from them at all compared to the early and mid game content, all there is to do for the tryhards is getting high scores in DA for no reason whatsoever
Once you can get through SD and DA for all the polys you're pretty much done with the game, you're just logging in out of habit and the promise of new characters that when you get has no content to use them on

In events there's always some harder bonus stages for players to do and they always exclude polys as rewards for these, this philosophy is stretched throughout the whole game and its incredibly baffling how scared they are from incentivizing their playerbase to engage in the fights that aren't just a complete snoozefest

As someone who has tried it ion a few occasions, the general gameplay loop just doesn't hold interest. Genshin sold itself on exploration and HSR on being a gacha JRPG, but his seems more akin to a traditional gacha format which isn't what people were looking for. The combat is easily better than those games mind but combat is about all the game is. I think being MHY's big 'third' game alone didn't do it any favours, because many were already into genshin and/or HSR and hesitate to invest time into a second or third MHY game.

Really feel like the game was in a rough spot from the start. Which is ashamed because it has higher production values and seems much friendlier to players than the other two. Also easily has the best character models, especially since Genshin only just now moved slightly beyond it's base models and HSR has actually downgraded.

I'm 100% serious the only thing that can save ZZZ is turning it into an auto battler.
The combat is fine but it becomes mind numbing after you've played 50+ hours of it, thats when your players will start dropping the game out of sheer boredom.
