Susie's problem as a character is simply that Toby is trying too hard with her. Trying to make her this beacon of light that does absolutely everything, she saves the day, gets the girl, has a gaggle of orbiter friends, is the centrepiece of a prophecy, it is really on the nose and irritating and the fourth chapter was easily the most egregious with Master Ros- i mean Gerson telling her she's literally the chosen one. For a developer known to subvert expectations, this cliche is really getting on my nerves.

I've got to disagree there, the gameplay is good in my opinion. It's mostly easy, but that's not inherently bad. The battles are varied and creative, dodging feels fun. Toby's very good with raw game design principles. By which I mean the more academic version of it where "game design" is all about examining the way presenting rules and interactions can create specific emotional/psychological responses (think Prisoner's Dilemma).
Toby primes us the entire chapter to disassociate the game stuff from the real. Especially in the Sword Route games where we're even pushed to break a pacifist playthrough by just assuming the pixels in the virtual screen aren't the same as a real character.
Which makes this moment pay off so well. We're left with no other option but a desire to get our due reward and we just let this thing walk out of the screen and towards Kris. It doesn't even have to slash him, WE do it. If you just walk to Kris, nothing happens and it just walks down eventually, it's only if you attack that it attacks and Kris falls back.
