Focus on friendship during Junior year.
Focus on your wanted stats during Classic/Senior.
You want mostly Speed on Front/Pace and mostly Strength on Late/End umas. Guts is trash, Wit is good to have.
Medium and Long distance races are Stamina checks. You'll lose if you don't meet the requirements. You want 500-600 Stamina or 300-400 Stamina if you invest in a Gold endurance skill.
More advanced but during your Senior year, you usually want 60k fans before Valentines day, 70k before Fan fest (+ green friendship with the Director) and 120k before Christmas.
Finally, getting good legacies uma will help you a lot (though you could say it's a bit of a cheat).

Nope. Also, hesitant front runners is an INSANELY good skill, always get it when you can. I find hesitant pace chasers to really help with breaking from packs, but the front runners version is insanely helpful for stopping horses with a huge lead.
