I was extremely tired of the setup of how the MSQ works by Endwalker, but I was so invested in the end of the story it didn't bother me as much.
All of that built up tiredness of that same style of just cutscenes and talking to people in Dawntrail with a story I didn't enjoy or care about made it 1000x worse. Actually make leveling part of the game besides dungeons, jesus. I wanted to adventure

Just a heads up, xivg made their own general thread where they did nothing but ERP and spam their modbeast folders while making zero attempt to spark discussion, zero action was take against them, snd they proceeded to gloat about it, and people objecting to their presence were banned while they spammed NSFW and avatarfagged and nothing happened to them

Dawntrail is a trainwreck of shoddy worldbuilding and the plot is more boring than ARR which is saying something.
The content cycle and job structure are boring and predictable. The lack of RPG elements is starting to take its toll. RPG elements are literally how you prolong the life of extremely time-consuming games.

7.1 and 7.2 had the elements of steering the plot towards intriguing things they just need to keep going in that direction and not fuck it up.
We need more customization and long-term grind outside of where to slot materia. Something to grind for consistently outside of tomestones and relic once you hit level cap that encompasses all content in the game that gives you exp. Bozja with its prestige levels are one option to carry over to the main game. It's fucking wild that all the Field Duty content has more fun progression than the base game.

They needed to massively invest in the game years ago, by which I mean hiring more staff, raising salaries to gain and retain competent devs, and not reallocating devs to work on other projects.
This would have allowed them to create more content faster, address issues like Viera hats before they became longstanding marks of shame, and continue to grow the game. It might also have avoided issues like job homogenisation which partially arose due to a lack of staff.
Instead they became complacent, thinking that the playerbase would tolerate a slower patch cycle and a lack of investment in content (e.g. Forked Tower not having a puggable version). All it took was one fumbled MSQ and now half the playerbase has gone. Internally at SE they're either panicking and trying to save XIV (we'll see if it's too little too late or not), or they're pinning their hopes on other potential revenue sources like XIV mobile and whatever unannounced games they have in development.

It's really pathetic how all the community talks about now is cope and bargaining. Every single post on the forums, reddit, 4chan, it's cope and bargaining. Here's why this expansion is bad and what they can do to fix it. What can we do to fix this? Here's my fanfiction design that would fix my favourite class. OMG the community is so amazing ILU all!!! Analyzing the exact moment that Wuk Lamat ruined the series and here's by schematic for a time machine so I can go back and stop YoshiP from making this awful mistake.

It's genuinely unattractive behavior, it's desperate. Nobody actually wants to talk about the game. It makes you realize how many people play XIV solely because they got to brag about it being the "right" MMO, the obvious choice for anyone worthy enough to make it through the "filter". They only play XIV because it makes them the chosen ones, not for any other reason. It reminds me of a bubble economy. No rational thinking, just hype and aura.

I count complaints as cope too by the way, because it's all wrapped up in this FFXIV creation myth that 1.0 and ARR are awful (they are) but it's TOTALLY WORTH IT once you get to HW, it's all changed. They have entire self-images dedicated to being able to boast about their amazing choice of MMO. If DT isn't AWFUL, if it's just mid, then HW and EW and all that aren't "average " XIV expansions, but exceptionally good ones. And that might mean that the true "average" of XIV is closer to ARR than these people really want to admit to themselves. DT can't be a return to form, it HAS to be the game's darkest hour.

Their office is in Tokyo, there's not a shortage of talent. A whole new wave of graduates appear every year and they choose to work at other companies instead of at SE. The poor direction and writing are because they finally lost enough skilled staff to attrition and needed to replace them with less skilled staff. Partislly to compensate for this, they had to promote Ishikawa to a supervisory position, which took her off the minutiae of actually writing. Because she wasn't the one writing, her ability to affect the writing is limited to reviews and revisions, which cost time and money (as opposed to doing it right the first time). There will always be physical time limitations involved in writing because ultimately only one person can write something, so asking for revisions (from a less skilled writer) can only go so far.

This is something I see all the time at work, my boss is a skilled writer who has very specific things he wants out of writing, but he doesn't have time to write everything he needs himself. I wouldn't have a job if he could do it all himself, but he can't. All he can do is review my work, ask for revisions, and hope that I'll eventually start doing things right the first or second time instead of the third or fourth.

The formula has been exposed for being absolutely shit, same shit, same updates, same content but more time between patches and people are fed up. MSQ I guess as well but I don't care for the story and skip all cutscenes.

Classes need something interesting. When I swap to another class I only need to change maybe one keybind or priority key press, which is just shit. They need to listen less to retards and just go with their gut. Like let Ninja focus more on ninjitsu and spamming more than they do now, but then Samurai can be the strong and slow attacks of the group. Dragoon should jump more. Reaper should form-dance more. etc.

Viper was fun as shit when it first came out, they simplified the keystrokes compared to other classes but made it more of a buff and debuff upkeep class which was fun and somewhat unique. Then they gutted all that so it just feels like any other mDPS.

It's impossible to erase her from Dawntrail as she is the main character, the first half is all about her, then Cowboy town even though she isn't present is still about Wuk and her nanny, and then the rest of the story is about her and Sphene. For all three of those stories you could remove the Wol and the story would play out the same way, you remove Wuk Lamat and it turns it into a different story entirely which SE/ CS3 won't ever do.

The writing was bad and didn't take itself seriously or consider the concepts and events it was using. Ignoring the gamble that is/was Wuk Lamat the events and seeing surrounding the plot of DT are borderline nonsensical at points and do not have satisfying logical OR emotional follow through. I do not think "fix" is the correct terminology to use, since the option of going back and rewriting swathes of the expansion is just not feasible from the standpoint of the business. Instead it must be endured and moved past.

The game has gone on for too long. It needs to wind down, not pick up steam.
The main story is finished (their choice, not mine) and anything they can muster is dogshit in comparison so it just feels like a hassle.

The real problem is the fucking awful gameplay. Everything is constantly sliding towards accommodating the braindead raiding mechanics, crafting is the most mind-numbing experience in the entirety of gaming, and the world is a series of empty rooms populated by trannies who insist on breaking the medieval world-building with their trannyglam. The game was just never good enough to power through all of that, there's nothing good left.

Ten years ago we could make an exception for low budget, time constraints, and problems, like BA's entrance requirements, non-functioning friend list, jank systems like squadrons.
The only reason to do anything is to get MOUNTS, MOUNTS are the sole way you can show your achievements. No one cares about achievements themselves because they hand points out for turning up to a shitty side event about nothing; minions are too small and look cheap, and relics are either too samey or too tied to a specific taste. So that's it, everything is all for fucking MOUNTS and when you've got 200+ mounts it gets boring. I don't want any more mounts to use as I grind through the DOGSHIT that is Frontline. I want to be free.

The Zero storyline was the perfect time to do it. We had a massive influx of dark aether into the Lifestream with Zodiark's death as the perfect set up for a rejoining of the Thirteenth, and the added kino of the Thirteenth's moon appearing in our sky so we could have a red moon again.

Endwalker should've ended with the Warrior of Light being grievously wounded while fighting the Endsinger, and the final battle with Zenos would lead to mutually assured destruction. The patch quests would then be the Scions learning to live without you, with the Dawntrail expansion starting from level 1 where you play a new character that is a less annoying Wuk Lamat's friend.
This will never happen because it's an MMO and even suggesting a character wipe would get me shot dead by a doohickey in the streets of Tokyo, but as-is I don't see any way forward with the WoL as-is. You're so fucking strong, stronger than everything, you could solve all of the new continent's problems in an afternoon if you wanted.

Needed to make XIV-2 as XIV is simply unsalvageable in it's current state from a net code, system code, security code, and story / characters standpoint since EW was a Swan Song moment.

I need you to think about that moment when they came out on stage and announced another 10 years of XIV. Now imagine this ominous possibility, that you'll be queuing up for Frontline Roulettes in 2030.

A lot of 1.0 is floating around in 2.0 and up. That's 2007-2010 code and assets designed for PStripples and 360s. The re-release with 2.0 still put it out into the world with worst in genre foundational netcode/systemcode/security and that hasn't changed for over a decade because it can't, an expansion cannot fix these problems.
Yoshida himself fully acknowledges they have systems in the game they can't work with because the people who made them are long gone and trying to reverse engineer it isn't working. You can easily see this in the Fate system, anyone who's played Occult Crescent will know exactly why it's a buckbroken system.

Even if they magic up a decent story for 8.0 that still leaves the rest of the game busted.

Forked Tower was about 85% of it. i had actually taken a day off so that i could be on the cutting edge of progression with OC and I was for the first few days. and then after 10 days i only got 1 attempt at Forked Tower

as i personally do not wish to participate in content that cannot be reasonably progressed with in game communication methods there was nothing left for me to do, as i got what i wanted out of cosmic exploration. pushing people through the MSQ by camping PF looking for things like 'need help with X MSQ trial queue' or requests in novice network asking for in progress wasn't keeping my attention so i just played other games. fantasy life i was pretty good, and recently its been diablo 2

They created magic with all the storylines before Dawntrail. Loads of people were into the world and its characters because of the main story. It felt alive.

Then Wuk Lamat happened. Graha Tia deepthroating icecream happened. Eating tacos together fixes everything happened.

In old school MMOs you're not supposed to find a new group of strangers every day. You're supposed to make friends and allies who share your goals, who you can call on regularly. Old school MMOs had organized raids just like this. Nobody in FFXI was running Dynamis with randoms, they had scheduled runs with linkshells.

As much as I would have liked a CLL style normal mode Forked Tower to do right now, the trade off is that two years from now it's going to be dead content. It does suck that you can't do FT on the fly with random pugs in the instance, but at least you'll be able to do it 6 years from now with little issue. Neither is perfect, but I'd rather the one that keeps the content alive.

So I'm only barely into ARR, but I'm wondering if all the big expansions add large new zones and cities to visit. I think I'll be really disappointed if the whole game only has Limsa, Uldah, and Gridania. Does exploring zones ever become more fun? There's literally nothing to do or see in the ones I have access to aside from those FATES which no one does.

Each expansion adds exactly six new zones and two cities. Six zones doesn't sound like a lot but they're fucking gigantic compared to the ARR zones, and typically each is used for an entire story arc. Some are big open areas, some are very linear like the final area in HW. While you're going through them you'll pick up aether currents (tokens that allow you to fly in that zone when you get them all) which are sometimes (very rarely) placed in interesting landmarks but more often just placed slightly off the beaten path and surrounded by annoying aggro-on-sight mobs. From ShB onwards FATEs are more worth your time because you get special tokens that can be traded in for stuff after you complete a certain amount of FATEs in that region. I think that's about it. Don't expect the formula to massively change.

I really hate the conversation around this game. FFXIV's problems are not hard to understand.
To cut costs, Naoki Yoshida decides to remove game design elements from the game. Namely its RPG elements. Every patch that comes in removes something.
Shadowbringers was that point for veteran players. People hoping for Final Fantasy XIV to become a Final Fantasy game (implying an RPG with Final Fantasy Jobs that had multiplayer features) that you could play with friends was completely lost.
A new wave of players that joined when the game had absolutely no RPG elements left but a decent story caused a second wind for the game. But this has lasted until now.
With no RPG elements you can't make good progression. Or gear that feels worthwhile. Or rewards that don't feel like shit.
What can they give players that feels worthwhile when the game itself doesn't support the idea of progression? A player can't be ahead of another player. The game simply doesn't work like that, because it's not an RPG.
And the problem is that fixing the game to retroactively support RPG elements again would be almost as much work as making a whole new game. It is over for FFXIV.
