Nintendo is locked into the switch 2 for 5-8 more years, and its age will only show more and more. 2025 was a terrible time to release a new handheld. It's right before a new era of cpus, gpus, and improvements in battery tech (solid state or squeezing more performance out of li-on).

You just have to look at the Z1E and Z2 PC handhelds like the Ally and the Legion to understand why there's no Deck 2, and there probably won't be for a long time.
On paper, those chips are A LOT more powerful than the Deck's anemic Van Gogh APU, but in practice you get literally zero performance gain unless you crank up the TDP, which completely fucks battery life. And even if you turn up the TDP to something absurd like 45W, the performance gains are significantly underwhelming - realistically you'd need something like 100+W to really take advantage of those chips, but at that point you're looking at sub 20 minute battery life.
Since there doesn't seem like there are huge efficiency gains to be made by shrinking chip dies(4nm to 3nm gave barely noticeable improvements), the processing technology for something the size of a handheld that's running on battery has simply hit a brick wall.
The one alternative to keep moving forward right now would be switching to the more efficient ARM architecture, but then you would have massive compatibility issues with PC games.

I play both my Deck and my Switch 2 in docked mode 90% of the time. Handheld mode is just for when I have a long train ride of if I'm visiting family by plane.
The Deck is also great for long trips since I don't need to bring a separate laptop. Just a bluetooth keyboard and I can use it as any other Linux machine in desktop mode.

Something's not adding up, how did they measure the wattages? If they just used each system's software to cap wattage then that's useless, Switch 2 and Steam Deck could implement their caps differently or even outright lie to the user.
Only way of checking is removing the batteries and measuring power draw from the wall socket, or fully charging both batteries to 100%, measuring each system's full battery capacity the time it takes for them to die and dividing them.

It takes 5 seconds in comparing the image quality and performance for you to know the newer hardware is just better because it has more to work off of. Dlss really does its job and makes the 1080p output nice and in it's performance mode I never feel it drop hard in framerate. Only in phantom liberty but it tends to stay around 30.

The biggest failure for me on the deck is not the power, it's the resolution.
800p is not really enough. It doesn't scale shit up all that well. You can argue that it's not capable of running newer games at more than that, but that's not the point. The vast majority of games it runs are older titles that it is perfectly capable of running on 1080p, even at more than 90fps.

The Steam Deck OLED has 16GB of RAM. The Switch 2 has 12GB, but about 3GB of this is reserved for non-gaming tasks, and you have no control over this because the Switch 2 has a closed operating system. In practice, you have a little over 8GB of RAM for games on the Switch 2, and there is nothing you can do to get around this, either as a developer or as a user.
