After the age of 12, almost any other hobby feels better. Video Games give you a false sense of accomplishment and progression. They're good when life moves slow and you want to feel like you're progressing at something. In real life, accomplishments can take years, and the longest games only take 150 hours or so. It is one of the best pasttimes as a social aspect. If you take a really good developed multiplayer game (even a 1v1 game) specific styles of gameplay and entire theories of metas and optimal playing can be developed personally over years. I don't think anything else has spawned as much discussion and areas of discussion as video games have. They're so good that they replace the "third-place" for a lot of adults for hanging out and for kids they act as a virtual playground.
The industry greats understand the social aspect of games and realize that this is the ultimate goal and experience that video games offer. Even with single player games, it's not enough to have people just experience the thing but to talk about experiencing the thing as well. This is also why live streaming is so big for games compared to other forms of it and why it started off pretty much exclusively for video games. The point, for people that play the games, is ultimately be able to have this interactive experience for one and then be able to use that experience to connect with others about the experience.
Truly bad games do not prompt people to do this.

First and foremost, video games are fun, easy to get into, relatively cheaper than almost any other hobby by enjoyment hours per dollar, and psychologically satisfying.

Video games for me are nothing more than a way to kill time these days. I'm uncapable of any kind of involvement when playing something. I can no longer play RPGs or anything that has some stupid plot, cutscenes or cringe characters.
Last time I played video games was two weeks ago when I spent the whole afternoon playing Here Comes The Pain on my PS2 with my brother and cousins while drinking beer.

Ah Dragalia Lost, I didn't play it but my friend who enjoyed it was pretty sad when it EOS'd. It seemed pretty cool. I really love Relink haha. I always liked MH but seeing that formula get combined with the style of a jrpg was awesome and I liked the party building since I mostly played it alone (online is pretty dead unless your in very late endgame farming). I watched the anime after and enjoyed it since it added a bit of context to the campaign of relink which I think was lacking a little even if that wasn't the point of the game. The gacha I think im going to avoid since I heard its very grindy from a friend.

I am in the middle of Sanderson's Stormlight Archives series, and picked up Beard's S.P.Q.R. to read next, although I am considering another run through of Lord of the Rings since it's been about 20 years since the last time. I don't write or listen to music much, but I do play guitar and just had my piano tuned and I'd like to start taking lessons (I just play it by ear).
Video games are cool, and have been my primary time-waster for about half of my life, but there have been years-long breaks from them where I pursued other hobbies and looking back I find those times were much more memorable and, for lack of a better term, full of life. The only gaming memories I have that rival those times were the LAN parties I had with friends growing up, I wouldn't trade those for the world. But those times are long past, and online gaming is barren compared to couch co-op. I'm not saying this is true for everyone, but for me the pattern is clear- the times of my life where I felt the best are the times I was compelled to game the least.
