They were as big or bigger than Batman around 1989-1991. They lost popularity really fast after that but were still familiar enough to support whatever games came out past that point. The original arcade game was giga popular. I would argue it was even more popular at the time than Turtles in Time is perceived to have been now.

Toy lines have about a 3-4 year window of peak time. That's about as long as it takes for 4 years worth of kids to "age out" of their fascination with it, leaving only the younger kids, and even younger kids are lost to new properties. But for those 4 years, there is no functional ceiling to how much cash you can milk out of it. TMNT is actually a rare case because it refuses to stay dead. TMNT keeps fucking coming back, not just with the nostalgia audiences either, it keeps generating new fans.

The basic formula that keeps the Turtles and other similar properties popular is:
There are kid-friendly stories, and kids automatically think teenagers are cool.
Teenagers often like edgy obscure versions of things they liked as kids, and the Turtles started as a dark indie comic.
Adults will share kid friendly versions of stuff they like with their kids.
And the cycle repeats.

So any property that manages to stay popular long enough can pick up those subsequent waves. The Turtles have also existed in that space where they're popular and profitable but not too mainstream.
If something goes too mainstream like Star Wars then it gets too easy to make money with it, corporations notice that, take a shit and hope the audience will keep paying money.

It might not reach the media craze, but other than a lull in the late 90's to about the relaunch in 2004, the ip's basically consistently made more money every year than year prior. They're on track for like 650-700 million this year, off the back of a 600 million 2023 fiscal year iirc

The 1990 movie coincided with a geometric explosion in demand for delivery pizza, forcing Pizza Hutt to rapidly alter it's business model to compete. Which directly lead to the decline in quality of the food, and the dine in experience.

TMNT 2 and TMNT 4 are both really solid beat-em-ups. TMNT 1 sucks and I think they had a fighter, but it was weak as hell. But yeah, they were MASSIVE in the late 80s and early 90s. There wasn't a cartoon channel unless your parents paid $20 a month for Disney Channel, so kids' shows were on network TV Saturday mornings, mainly ABC and Fox. Shows and franchises like TMNT and Transformers ended up being huge culturally because everyone was kind of pigeonholed into watching the same thing since cartoons were appointment viewing.

>>715123580
That and surfer talk like Michaelangelo and Bart Simpson used became lame around '93 or '94.

>>715124106
We had one too, and when you'd go on a Friday night you'd see 6-8 kids around the Simpsons machine tag-teaming their quarters just to beat it. It was more cooperation than competition which was pretty weird for an arcade. I gotta ask, Sortino's?

I grew up with the NES games and the toys, and occasionally watched the '87 cartoon, it was barely on by 95-96. I have more memories with the 2003 cartoon if anything else.
Is Viacom fucking up the franchise? I still don't feel right seeing the turtles as 'Nicktoons'.

The second movie suffered as parents groups threw fits over how dark the first movie got (when it really didn't get that dark and edgy at all) so that's why more of the second movie had daytime scenes, more jokes, 'friendlier' turtle costumes, and a more childish plot than the first movie.
Also Laird and Eastman hated Bebop and Rocksteady along with most of what the cartoon had (even though they contributed character designes/ideas to the show when it was being planned out) which is why we got Tokka and Rahzar instead.

I had a bunch of the original toys and hated how unarticulated they were. Most of the wrestling figures at the time were the same. At most you would wiggle their arms and maybe legs. My friends and I usually just had wrestling matches with GI Joes since they were way more articulated. Modern era toys are definitely better in every way.

Turtles in Time really wasn't that big in the arcade, especially compared to the first game. The biggest issue is that it came out in 1991 after the IP was starting to fatigue a bit plus there was a certain Capcom arcade sequel starring some guys called Ryu and Ken that came out around the same time that pretty much murdered everything else in terms of arcade revenue. There's a reason the SNES version replaced the arcade one in most people's minds as more people played that than the original.

I got it for my birthday shortly after it came out and cleared it on the highest difficulty that afternoon with only having to start over twice or so due to Slash being the hardest fucking fight in the game.

That's why Transformers is still alive, while Thundercats died.

Depends on the parents, Conservatives were waging their culture war shit even in the 1980s only it was TV warping your brains.
The only difference is Toy companies bribed the fuck out of Reagan and the Republicans do deregulate things so cartoons could just be 30 minute commercials for their toys, which is why there was so much toyetic shit in the 1980s.
On the bright side, some of them had actual good writing so they still stood up the test of time.
But then their toys didn't sell so they got shitcanned anyway.

Recently I began rewatching the OG Transformers because Transformers One was such a good movie, and I was shocked at how well it held up. Some episodes could even touch on nuanced topics, in ways that kids or their parents could understand of course. Some eps felt like classic sci-fi short stories.

But then Decepticons taking over a night club so Soundwave could brainwash teens happened.

I'm a diehard Turtle faggot but upon completing G1 only a couple years ago I'd say overall it has the highest quality of all the 80's toy franchise cartoons for (occasional) serious subject matter (and the movie), actual worldbuilding lore some episodes (generally season 2 and 3) and a great introduction to epic scale sci-fi for a kid that was fairly unique. Would anyone honestly dispute that Optimus isn't superior to all four turtles?

Of course you also get the dumb shit occasionally, but generally, the shows were well written at the time.

After the first Nickelodeon cartoon which was full of flaws like turning Donatello into an annoying April stalker simp they kept making worse ideas like Race Swapping April and hiring Seth Rogen to continue Race Swapping April but making her a disgusting obese potato and sex changing Casey and Bishop.

I swear Ninja Turtles is being destroyed worse than Star Wars under Disney. You hear that Kingdom Hearts fans you are shit! And I hate how its the shitty Seth Rogen turtles who are the guests in Sonic Racing. Gross.

The funny thing is that Hasbro had absolutely zero idea that kids would actually grow attached to the characters and the audience reaction to them killing off 90 percent of the old cast in the movie completely blindsided them. The reaction was overdramatized over the years but lots of kids were NOT happy with nearly all the season 1 cast getting wiped out to make way for the movie cast.

I prefer the 'Drugs bad' era just because writers were allowed to cross lines they normally weren't because it was about depicted how terrible drugs were.
Like in BraveStarr where they straight up kill a kid by having him OD on space cocaine.
Same with GI Joe where the Headman remains the only character killed on screen in the entire TV series's history.

You know what I find sad? Ninja Turtles is the one franchise that should be swimming with anthro women but the franchise barely has any. There's so few its disgustingly gay. Even things like Star Fox has a chunk of anthro ladies.

Ninja Turtles has more in common with Sly Cooper in that its a universe that lends itself to many anthro females but it only has one. For Sly Cooper its Carmelita Fox. For Ninja Turtles is Alopex. Not going to bother mentioning any other examples like Ninjara who only showed up once in Archie Comics.

They did a soft reboot of IDW recently to make it edgier and more violent. It's.. kind of okay, except it's another one of those stories where the writer has the brothers refusing to cooperate with each other and you get frustrated at how stupid everybody is being due to their egos or mental issues.

What makes me angry about the choice to use Seth Rogen turtles is that when they added Ninja Turtles to Street Fighter as skins or as DLC to Fortnite they used original artists to create original adaptations of the Ninja Turtles.

I don't see why Sega didn't hire Sonic the Hedgehog's official artist and character designer to do his own Sonic Style renditions of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raph. That would have been the best choice.

Anyway my hope is that the sequel to Seth Rogen's first TMNT movie is a fucking failure. I refuse to believe those shitty turtles are popular. Let me put it to you people like this, Kung Fu Panda is a theatrical movie that does Martial Artists Animals BETTER than Seth Rogen Ninja Turtles. And sadly Seth Rogen voices Mantis in Kung Fu Panda.

Almost always the case. Gotta hook you with the opening that they only have to do once a season (unless they keep the same intro for the entire series). It was a sign the TMNT cartoon was dying when the openings got more and more cheap looking until the final seasons were them just reusing clips from the show and first movie.

That's because the games are allowed to inject original flair as such the turtles can do tougher things like actually kill off villains unlike the censored cartoons. It wasn't gritty like Mortal Kombat but the games did make the turtles cooler.

The worst Ninja Turtles games are those that are truly licensed and based directly on the lousy family friendly cartoons like 2003 and the first Nickelodeon cartoon. Those games don't have any liberty so they had to truly obey the rules of 4Kids and Nickelodeon which made the games feel "restricted" and soulless. I'll even take the Platinum Ninja Turtles game Mutants in Manhattan strictly because it was its own original thing as such the game could do whatever. Wasn't the best game but it didn't feel weighed down by airing cartoons.

>Optimus Prime was an extra father figure for every boy who grew up watching him, in fact if one day he came walking down the street and announced he needed help fighting off some space alien threat, hundreds of thousands of men in their 40s and 50s would grab whatever weapons they could find and follow him into battle without question.

I stopped reading those comics dude they were simply too terrible. By the time the soft reboot happened I lost all interest and when I heard that the premise of the reboot is that the turtles were hating each other and I didn't bother. I've had enough of turtles hating each other melodrama.

And the thing is that in THIS franchise I really don't like the idea of the main characters splitting. Always hated it as early as the first time I saw this type of cliche in the futuristic episode of the 2003 cartoon. For this franchise the magic is the four brothers being a team playing off their dynamic personalities. On their own it just don't work.

That was always the funniest thing about the 80's G.I.Joe (and Transformers) cartoons as despite this big terrorist organization and big counter organization shooting at each other with guns and elaborate machina every episode probably less than a handful of people actually died in the entire run. The laser rifles everybody has never seriously hurt anybody, a jet can get blown up to kingdom come but the pilots ALWAYS eject, etc. It's why the Transformers movie was so jarring as suddenly the Decepticons were brutally murdering Autobots in the first 10 minutes or so when the cartoons never pulled shit like that.

You know what I want a Ninja Gaiden style Ninja Turtles game I'm talking full blown M rated. I want to be able to butcher and slaughter all enemies with blood flying everywhere. If something as ridiculous as Metal Gear Rising can exist what exactly is so weird about the Ninja Turtles embracing edginess and NO don't make it based on the Mirage Comic. Make it edgy, make it bloody, but don't use the Mirage universe. Let it be original.

I find this image funny. Many people say that seeing the turtles doing crossovers is weird and yet it was crossover what introduced Renet within the TMNT franchise. Renet is the franchise's time travel and multiverse character essentially. She exists to justify different dimensions and alternate timelines and such. And it took a crossover with Cerebus to justify all of her existence and her future role in the franchise.

So whenever anyone complains about TMNT crossovers point them in this direction. TMNT has always embraced crossovers inherently. Keep in mind the Cerebus crossover is older than the Usagi Yojimbo one.

*Hasbro

Marvel did it too sporadically with the TF comic as they did two giant rounds of "kill all the old cast off except the creators' pets". Starscream got super juiced up via the Underbase in one arc and slaughtered 90 percent of the cast then a few years later they had Unicron show up and kill a good amount of the remaining ones. The comic was getting so centralized on a core cast of characters by that point that when the original series ended there only about 20 or so Transformers left that the comic remembered existed.

Return to New York was so fucking badass.
It was my introduction to Mirage TMNT when I was 8 years old. I was a at a comic shop in Vancouver with my dad (one that sadly closed many moons ago), and spotted #19 on the rack. Being the massive Turtles fan that I was, I asked my dad to buy it for me. My dad was familiar with the comics, so he carefully explained that it was NOT the Turtles I was familiar with.
"It's much darker than what you're used to. They're not party dudes, eating pizza and surfing. It's going to be violent, and not funny. Are you SURE you want it?"
Of course, I wanted it even more now because that made it sound awesome. And holy shit, was it ever. He bought me #20 and 21 as they came out, knowing how much I loved that first issue he bought me. #21 blew my fucking mind.
I remember taking the comics to school, and all the kids in my class thought I had brought some fake knockoff. when I tried to tell them that this was the real thing, they all called me a liar.
I wish I still had my original copies. But, hand a black and white comic to an 8 year old, and he's going to colour the fucking thing lol. I bought replacement copies in my teens while doing my best to get a full run of the og Mirage stuff (though sadly not first prints of #1 and 2. I did manage to score the recalled 2nd print of #4 for under 10 bucks though)

Still angry about that, they had the turtles cross over with Batman and I once heard a rumor, so take this with lots of salt, that the Toy Story movies were supposed to give the Ninja Turtles a cameo since their action figures were popular at the time. Though funny enough the Ninja Turtles arcade machine does make a cameo in Disney's Wreck it Ralph go figure during the film's intro.

And in the end we never got the Daredevil crossover. Maybe Daredevil is not popular enough.

Threads like this can only make one feel old. The most famous TMNT games are the ones based on the first cartoon. You don't get the impression the Ninja Turtles are popular with young generations which is why many theatrical movies like 2007 or the Bay movies are failures. And please don't say Seth Rogen's TMNT is successful that film made less cash than the Bay turtles. Genuinely doubt they are popular.

Laird sold out he is simply a tired old man. I don't blame him being tired but maybe he could have donated the TMNT to the public domain. Because he sold out now the copyright is owned by a corporation and we need to wait like fifty more years until the first copyright of Mirage expires. We will be dead by then.

And Laird never finished his final issues of Mirage and I still hate how he invented crazy ideas like Donatello being shrunk to toy size and is never cured. What kind of idea is that? Then you have other ideas like Michelangelo got sperm jacked and never got revenge on the hussy who sexually played him. Laird what were you thinking?

yes but no not really
you have to rememeber back then the internet didnt exist or was barely around or knew about

you liked whatever you were told to like and you watched whatever you could for 30 minutes before the day started

sometimes it was tmnt, sometimes it was pokemon, sometimes you had to watch hereculese or xena princess warrior. The world was a lot smaller then and alternatives wasnt a thing. You like what was given or you fucked off.

Which was actually great because sometimes you would get bored of the same old things on TV and go outside to see what the other kids were up to. This was true to a lesser extent with video games up until 16-bit era, when games started to feel more comfy than running around outside.

Yeah, I have most of the Super7 figures but stopped collecting those. I have the original Mezco turtle set as well as Casey Jones. I have a few NECA figures, but I'm not really a fan. I have the JoyToy Krang, and I think I might get the rest of the JoyToy figures. I did recently get an original Sewer Lair, complete and in great condition. Pic is from a few years ago of a lot of my Super7 figures (but not all).

TMNT was as popular as Batman/Superman at their peak. But they were mostly a fad, but they still are relevant enough to have a strong fanbase. I don't think turtle mania will happen again, the comic industry suffered heavily due to what turtle mania introduced to the speculative scene with the collapse in the 90s.

Square makes figures that are maybe on-par with knock-off Figmas, but they price them as legit Figmas. They should really be like $40-$50 instead of $100+, and even then they'd feel kind of crap.

I was born in 2001 and my first experience watching the turtles was the 2003 series, when i was 5 back in 2006 the series were being aired on Jetix, and holy fuck watching the movies were such a backlash to me, i was acustomed to the gritty turtles so watching them acting so juvenile was a nice change of pace for me.

Those abominations ruined whole evenings of my life trying to look at anything possitive about them, then i watched that Twisted Metal series, and honestly i think they nailed most of the things, also Sweet tooth wasn't murdered so much, so there's that.

It helps that Twisted Metal has very little consistent canon to actually violate. I don't think there's been a single game that didn't massively retcon or contradict every game before it. I'm still mad at what the show did to my boy Agent Shepard though, one of the series' only unambiguously good guys to get an unambiguously good ending.

I honestly think it's because the franchise is just so weird conceptually that it lends itself to a peculiar longevity and reinvention (some better than others). They are four turtle mutants that walk upright and talk and with distinct archetypal personalities. OK. But they are also ninjas, with ninja weapons and abilities. Right. And they are raised by a mutant rat master. And their nemesis is an evil ninja overlord. And you have all this other weird shit; sci-fi and magic and a myriad of creatures and weird beings. I don't think the eternal battle between Decepticons and Autobots or GI Joe and Cobra has been portrayed with the same variety the way the Turtles vs the Foot have over their various incarnations; compare the Mirage comics to the cartoon to the 1990 movie vs Archie vs IDW. There's basically something for everyone because it's all so familiar yet different. Obviously I am not in favor of Michael Bay or Seth Rogen's stuff but even those can unite the fans in shitting on those versions.

It happens sometimes, maybe someone in the writers team didn't like him, contrary to those 3 series i listed where everyone got murdered or raped as a character in ways i never conceived possible, i remember watching a woolieversus podcast were they discussed the castlevania series, and you know how to identify fake fans, because some dumbass said about Trevor's design:

"I mean they had to come up with something, it's not like there was so much material from trevor to come up with a design"

Dumbass literally has never played Curse of Darkness were they LITERALLY made the best Trevor design that will ever exist.

Common issue with 80s cartoons. The villains all have to be bumbling idiots so there are no real stakes, similar to how even GI Joe, entirely built around spec ops vs terrorists fighting each other with military firearms and armored vehicles, had nobody ever take an ounce of damage and anyone whose jet was shot down was immediately shown being unharmed and floating with a parachute. Blame soccermoms and christoids, the first wave of modern media censorhawks.

It makes me sad to think how cool cartoons could have been, unrestrained by the yoke of nagging moms afraid of little Timmy's adrenaline spiking even once.

At least sometimes things got through. SWAT Kats had actual people (cats) dying on screen. One episode had a guy who wasn't even the villain of the episode turn into crystal and fucking shatter. And no, you definitely did not get better when the episode ended.

Actually he was a morally bankrupt warden, also when crystal villain was stopped, everyone turned back to normal.
Of course this meant the warden was in pieces and still dead

Going on this about 'why can't we show people dying?' I used to be like that with Samurai Jack because he could only slice up robots, then after seeing season 4 where he actually killed people, I preferred him just slicing up robots.

Yeeeeeah, he wasn't a nice guy, but he wasn't like the guy going around killing people either. That's a fate usually reserved for like a Batman Beyond villain.

Sure, but the key difference here is you might not want the HERO killing people. But villains? They don't care. And consequences for their evil really builds up the stakes.

This only becomes a problem if you have an extremely limited roster of villains, and you keep them all on ice so you can revive them season after season. There's ways around this:
>They escape capture, so it's not the hero's fault
>Just introduce new villains. Maybe related to the old ones, but not the same guy breaking out of arkham 50 times
I'm sure there's plenty of others, too. Honestly, the "Joker" problem is just a prominent issue if you obsess about a series too long. You were never supposed to consider that angle, unless it's a legitimate internal struggle for the protag. I think I'm fine without even addressing it, unless you make them too openly genocidal.

>Common issue with 80s cartoons. The villains all have to be bumbling idiots so there are no real stakes
well yeah it has to have the kind of plot a child would make up when they smash their toys together

Yeah, it sucks that Square Enix created their own line of toys instead of licensing to better companies. They're only good for statue shit.

There in lies the problem, if you create murdering one time villains like Morbulus who die, the audience can't grow to like them.
And if they're recurring, you create the moral problem of a system that lets murderers constantly escape.

In BTAS, which is arguably the greatest depiction of any of those characters, none of the characters were ever evil enough to warrant death, not even Joker, so it never really grated on anyone that Batman never killed them. The full-blown capeshit comics are where things get ridiculous. It really makes no sense for the villains to get such extreme changes but the heroes remained static and unable to cope with those threats.

Never forget that we lost Swat Kats because Ted Turner wanted to push more Captain Planet on the children.

This is actually wrong, the creators of SWAT Katz said the show got cancelled by some mid level executive who was unhappy about the toy line not coming out fast enough.
Ted Turner didn't even know the show existed.

There in lies the rub, BTAS is still a cartoon show for kids so they couldn't show the villains killing people directly.

True. And a cartoon does aim to sell toys, which is infinitely harder if you don't give them lots of screentime. There's a balance to be struck between "disposable villain of the week" and "recurring headache character for the heroes." TMNT is probably a good example of this, because I'm sure there were plenty of bad guys who only had 1 episode.

They found awesome cheats for this, like Joker's smile gas. Not explicitly lethal, but they were unresponsive and horrifically altered... you could certainly come to the conclusion they were dead.

Batman Beyond was awesome, but I don't think it was as successful as the showrunners hoped, either. It certainly wasn't a breakaway hit even if I hold it in high regard.
