So a sandbox eldritch investigator sim game in 90s (not tokyo) japan where you create a character (a male or female student in high school or whatever) and you go on investigations based on city/town rumors. Not every rumor leads to an actual eldritch case so it keeps the player wondering. During a case, some random atmospheric scares or an evil ghost chasing you and so on while you try to uncover some horrific cultist sacrifice in your school or whatever.
Essentially just take Call of Chtulhu (the japanese version) and just make it a video game.

This is one of the games I adore on a deep level ever since I first played it, I'm at a point where I actually know the ship by heart and where most of the survivors are, the only critical flaws with the game are indeed the AI and the controls, the instruction manual is absolutely dogshit trying to explain how it works, but it took me until my more recent playthroughs to figure out that there is indeed a command to have the survivors follow you without constantly having to stop and wait for them to follow.

The point system is also a bit busted, you can't have many survivors following you to start, so basicaly you're always looking for women and children, often with men taking up useful slots to get the best ending.

GOD I wish there was a 3D version of this. The playstation game sucks so much fucking dick it's actually unreal. If I had a gaming job I'd concept/design that shit in a heartbeat.

Being stuck on a sinking ship sounds like absolute nightmares. Watching documentaries about seafaring disasters already makes me horrified.

I keep fantasizing about making games based on real disasters and real tragedies. Thought for instance of making a SOS type game based on the Sewol ferry disaster, which starts as a different type of game. Maybe something like a romance VN, before the ship starts sinking. I guess I'm trying to emulate the feeling of having a fun day turned into a deadly nightmare, but the way I'm explaining it sounds cheap.
Anytime I read wikipedia articles and I see monuments made to honor a victim or victims, all I think of is that it would make for an extremely grim game over screen... ot that the articles themselves are the game over screen.
I keep imagining a stealth game were you are the would be victim of a serial killer. Depending on how far you got into the game, the game over screen would be missing person posters, a wikipedia or news article, a monument...

I suppose it's also tasteless to have a game based off actual disasters and to try to replicate that feeling in spite of how sensitive the subject is, it's different from actual horror games or action games where your character is actively seeking his way out of a place with scary things in it and murdering enemies in his way, in a game like SOS you're most likely being placed on a way too realistic scenario where survival rates are extremely low.

ircc Titanic Honor and Glory started out as a game like this where they planned for you to be able to explore the ship/interacted with the survivors while it sunk, and besides the obvious technical difficulty of doing something like this, they also got into some trouble with potential backers/Official Titanic partners, so now they're exclusively developing the game as a walk-through of the ship with a sinking option and MAYBE an NPC here and there.

Personally an issue I can imagine would be how to design an interesting ship interior in 3D that you can navigate as it tilts, and all the variables in place like seawater creeping in, falling debris as hazards, and obviously the interior design, the lady crithania is actually quite a anachronistic/innacurate ship for the time, the exterior is obviously the Titanic/Olympic class style, but the interiors have ballrooms, dining rooms, shops and social spaces that would either make it 3 times larger than the ship it's based on, or with extremely low number for passenger cabins

And then you have the obvious issue that it's technically physically impossible for a vessel to turn upside down since the center of gravity has to be low on a design level, making the whole point of the Poseidon Adventure premise impossible

I'd like to make an FPP that's a cross between Indiana Jones and H.P. Lovecraft.

If you think about it they'd fit perfectly together while the only movie that got close was The Mummy.

My games would start like most of Lovecraft's stories do, a protagonist gets a letter from someone that leads him into Innsmouth where he finds a map in the room he was specifically told to rent. Soon he has to fight his way through the town to get to the harbor where a mysterious stranger in a boat call to him to which he then jumps onto before the ships owner fires up the engines and gets them out of there.

The man in the boat was involved with the protagonists friend who had a portion of a map and said he disappeared before he could give him the map that our protagonist now has.

Our protagonist believes that Boat Cap killed his friend when he see's a small gold chain that belonged to him with some blood on it. They reach the island and once there Boat Cap tries to kill protagonist but gets the upper hand as he suspected Boat Cap would try to kill him once they arrived and he was of no further use to him. Protagonist kills Boat Cap, takes a sack of his supplies including food, water, a gun, a box of ammo and a flask filled with kerosene that he figures he could use to make a torch once it gets dark.

The man explores the mysterious island and finds the Cult of Cthulhu where horribly mutated natives congregate and worship a large statue that slightly glows with an unusual color because it's actually made out of radioactive materials causing them to biologically degenerate into savages over generations due to repeated exposure.

The statue has some markings that the protagonist writes down that he later finds out translates into "FINE ME AND YOU SHALL BE FREE OF THIS WORLD!!!"

One of the natives takes a large piece of the statue that seems to have broken off and leads what appears to be close to 100 natives toward out of the jungle towards the shore.

When I was a kid tornado warning scared the shit outta me but beyond a one off level or super short game I don't know how I could make a whole game out of it. Maybe different natural disasters? When I moved out I first lived in a big mansion that had been turned into an apartment complex. It was in pretty bad shape so by the end I was one of 3 people left living there, so I could walk most of the building and be totally alone.
A horror game I got from it is where you walk around in a mansion where strange occurrences begin to happen, but the game retains the suspense and keeps you guessing for most of it if there's a physical presence or just a mindfuck. One of the encounters would be going into the bathroom and looking out the window into the yard. At one point a stranger will casually appear in the window while you're looking through it. No jumpscare or sound effects except a little ambiance, and he just looks for a while and moves out of the window again, to the left, which would be to the front door. You hear a "Hello?" but if you open the door no one's there. Your character will call "Hello!?" but no answer.

The game ends when you move out of the building after 5 days, and it's based around living the final days of the rent in a lonesome mansion. You'll call the owner each morning about whether the finances went through and to address the issue of giving the key.

On the 2nd day the key gets stolen, and you'll look for it but become increasingly suspicious someone has been in your room and taken it. The owner will inform you that he recently kicked out someone who couldn't pay his rent, and I should be careful to keep my door locked because he was seen snooping previously.

The key can't be found even on day 5, causing you to remain 1 more day. And on the final day, someone else is in the building with you, unquestionably, but who is it and what are they going to do to you?

Something about the deep sea. There's so much creepy shit in there. I find fish with human features to be weird and close to uncanny valley territory. I dunno, like we've developed a technology to handle deep pressure. And we can explore deeper than ever before and see all those weird creatures that have yet to be discovered. Or, like we found the lost city of Atlantis. But the remains of the inhabitants have been taken over by parasites and evolved with time. They look like grotesque imitations of a human body.

Everything in the area glows with an eerie color that helps Friend, Protagonist and several Nazi soldiers navigate the area on foot until they arrive at a massive door of which causes the piece of the statue in their possession to glow with greater intensity meaning they have found Cthulhu.

They walk towards the door and Friend taps the door with the statue piece which causes the entire door to star glowing as it slowly opens up, leading to a tunnel down below.

The men enter the cave, fade to black as an inhuman sound shrieks along with the voices of all the men save Protagonist who manages to run away and get back to the U-boat.

He explains that everyone with him is dead but the sailors don't believe him at first, thinking he killed them until they hear an ear shattering noise.

Both Protagonist and Sailor look back towards the tunnel and see a monstrous entity coming their way.

Protagonist, Sailor and several of crew members get back into the U-Boat and back up in order to turn but not before firing a torpedo that hits the base of the area they were standing on, causing the entire area to start collapsing including the ceiling that comes down down onto Cthulhu, crushing it.

The U-boat makes it out from under the glacier to safety.

The Sailor, who is now the defacto Captain based on his rank, agrees with Protagonist that they are to never tell anyone what they saw and that the Captain and other crew members died due to the area collapsing before they were able to make it.

The U-boat heads towards Innsmouth and once there Protagonist and the ships crew find that the entire town is abandoned except for one or two residents who are immobile due to their deformities.

Protagonist asks what happened and where did everyone go?

The crippled man says "They responded to Cthulhu's call" that he was free and they were to join him with everyone in the town gathering at the docks before diving in with none returning.

Protagonist and U-boat Cap decide to burn the town down which they do.

Afterwards, once the town has been reduced to smoldering embers, Protagonist bids farewell to the U-boat captain and who expresses his regret that they couldn't have met under better circumstance before shaking hands before he and the remaining crew take turns shaking Protagonist's hand.

They then enter the U-boat and sail off while submerging until out of sight and Protagonist walks way and through the town and when he reaches the end he turns his back to look at the devastated Innsmouth behind him, takes a deep breath, sighs and continues forward beyond the towns limits, his fate left unknown......

We return to the arctic glacier and though several transitions downwards come to where Cthulhu was crushed but not killed as it's pinned and can't move but still able to transmit its thoughts which reach an undiscovered island where its inhabitants have gathered at the beach shore before walking into the ocean until none are left as we stay on the ocean as the screen fades to black while during the credits you can hear the sounds of the water until the end when we faintly hear chanting before the credits finish into darkness and silence.
