Vanille is extremely underrated

XIII-2 only marginally improves the moment to moment gameplay with some additions and better level design and character progression. But when it comes to the vision of the project and building up a Final Fantasy title, it's completely derivative. It reuses music and whole levels from XIII multiple times. XIII had over half of it's content cut out and assets lost due to engine incompatibilities, the scope was tremendous at first and had to be cut down drastically. XV was a much bigger game than XIII, and it's plans were far, far bigger on paper with an insane amount of cut content.

FFXIII is the LAST mainline Final Fantasy title that was developed by the LINEAL Final Fantasy development studio. That's why it feels like the last Final Fantasy game.

I really did enjoy XV for what it was, and I shed a tear at the ending. I think it accomplished a lot that it set out to do and it deserves some credit (I played Royal years later)
But XVI, that was something that left an awful taste in my mouth that I couldn't wash out. And so I actually played XIII after I beat XVI. And I think that's one of the main reasons why I loved it so much. I felt like I was finally playing Final Fantasy again, after over 70 hours of the most disappointing and gray video game I think I've ever witnessed. It's not that much better, in my opinion because I don't prefer the party, the premise, nor the story events of the sequel. XIII-2 is only "better" than XIII as a designed "video game", on paper. But it fails to eclipse XIII as a completed "Final Fantasy" product. That's just how I feel about it. Monster catching is half baked, party is half baked. Caius is really great and instant classic, but he is only on screen for 10% of the whole game.

It's the same battle system, there's just no training wheels placed on you from the start. The slow drip of magic in XIII was thematically relevant. That's one of the big problems when discussing FFXIII, many of it's gameplay design shortcomings that many people have problems with were integrated with thematic storytelling decisions. Things like, there not being towns of NPC's that you spam conversations with to get information to get past progress flags. So while someone may say they really dislike these linear and strictly focused aspects to the game, someone else can say they really appreciate those same things.

That's what is very interesting about FF to me as an art piece, each game has many unique perspectives to be communicated.

That's one of the problems with JRPG design, sometimes they really do have important things to say. But how could you know? Who has important juicy info or lore, and who is just scratching their ass to troll you? This town/NPC/progress flag design can easily help build out the illusion of a large world for sure, but they also leave some players with a hole that is missing from their experience. If you don't go around talking to all those NPC's, well then you didn't read the important secrets hidden in there! And then you don't really even know what the story is about, because you never had that optional conversation with that guy that one time! This is a real thing in some games. FFVIII comes to mind with how much cryptic shit is in it just to sell strategy guides and boost discussion

FFXIII does away with it. It streams all important information to your journal autonomously the moment that you need to know about it. You don't need to ask someone's grandpa for lore. Right after an important scene if the game wants you to read about something for context, you are served that literature directly to the Datalog. It doesn't gate progress around a bunch of flags. You don't have to skip through text boxes to get info. The exact moment that you need to know some details, those details arrive in your journal. It's a very sleek and futuristic way to design a journal system, but it really has some serious problems. The notification is the exact same, whether it's really important information or just some throwaway tutorial. Because it pops up so often from the very beginning, and the player is likely not willing to check it early, players will go the entire game without checking it more than once or twice. You don't have to check it sure, but because they never check it they miss out on black and white details, and their confusions around the story are compounded by their lack of clarity.

Yeah, exactly. And this is basically a default game design approach for a lot of these titles, especially 10-20-30 years ago in order to simulate the illusion of that expansive world. For a lot of people, it's what brings a lot of immersion to their experience. Wandering around, talking to different people, and putting yourself into that adventure. I understand that and I love it too in the right game. Oblivion comes to mind. But at the same time, when the game is designed around progress gates constantly forcing you to enter into every screen spamming the X button all around until you hit the progress flag you needed checked to open the pathway......it's just not very compelling design after the 10th time.

I personally understand completely why they made FFXIII so straight forward and without any fat. It's because they had a story they wanted to tell about a group of people, their bonds and their place in the world. Game really deserves a Remaster to address some of the basic shortcomings it has, like the camera being too zoomed in/moving erratically, an updated HD UI, change party leader during battle, no game over when party leader dies, etc etc. Maybe rebalance the progression system for better flexibility at the beginning, increase enemy aggression and turn speed. Add a side hunt in each area from earlier on in the game that you'd turn in at the save points. Redesign the world map to include Cocoon/Pulse in a 3D hologram model.

The whole trilogy deserves it of course, but FFXIII is the one I really want to see get improved. The others would just need to share the same HD improvements and QoL like speed up or infinite Gil and stuff. It's XIII that needs those newer features back ported. I think once you reach Palumpolum and Lightning apologizes to Snow for how she's treated him and you fight the big ass helicopter outside Hope's apartment, you should be enjoying the gameplay and the characters alike. I have over 2k hours of playing this game. Speedran it to death, severely burned out not from the gameplay itself (it's that good), but from the community and newer strats that take the few RNG elements the game has and crank them up to 11.

an underrated aspect of the linearity is the fact that even progression is linear. You don't unlock paradigms until Chapter 3, you can't change your party leader or even change who is in your party until like Chapters 9 or 10, your character's ATB bar doesn't get upgraded until you unlock their eidolon, and you could get to a point where the crystarium would end and couldn't upgrade your characters until you reached a point in the story where it expanded.
That combined with the hallways and no towns make the game feel a lot more linear than other FF games like X.
